    Re: amitriptyline HELP ME FAST

Amitriptyline is a special order drug for weight gain. Please ask your doctor to prescribe one that does not cause weight gain. There are several out there, like Cymbalta (duloxetine) and Wellbutrin (bupropion) that are not noted for causing weight gain.

Less prescribed and also likely to cause weight gain are tricyclic antidepressants, such as amitriptyline and doxepin. This category of medications seems to work on blocking the receptors known as histamine and alpha 1. What this means is the potential to stimulate appetite, slow the metabolic rate and possibly increase carbohydrate cravings. However, weight gain varies depending upon the specific medication (amitriptyline and imipramine may be more likely to cause this side effect), dose and length of time on the medication.
There is a category of antidepressants that seek to balance the brain’s naturally-occurring chemicals, serotonin and norepinephrine. These drugs are not likely to cause weight gain in the short term and have a low tendency to cause this problem over the long term. Medications in this category include venlafaxine and duloxetine. A medication that also works with the brain chemical dopamine is bupropion. Bupropion is unlikely to cause weight gain, and in fact, may cause some weight loss. It is also used to help people quit smoking.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

Don't go off the amitriptyline without your doctor's help, but do call tomorrow to get an appointment to get it changed. Go with research in hand as to amitriptyline causing the very effects you are trying to overcome.

Two issues I want to address.

#1-Cymbalta is WONDERFUL when taken as prescribed. BUT don't EVER just stop taking it without your doc's complete involvement. I stopped taking it abruptly and believe me, it was almost an endless spiraling black hole. Lots of others out there with the same experience. Happy to suicidal in no time flat. I have issues accepting the fact that depression runs in my family. I also write and believe while it makes me incredibly "happy," the pills (all of them) do hinder my creativity.

#2-Did you just start running? If so, your muscles are clinging to water right now. It's water retention in the muscles. When I started lifting weights, the same thing happened to me. Every time I increase the weights now, it happens again. Don't panic and remember...this time won't necessarily be a mirror reflection of last time. Hang in there and be patient. Commit to a month. Keep up the exercise. You're going to do really well!!!

i really appreciate your advice. Im just alittle discoraged cause i havent ever been this unhappy with the way i look. I have always been a very pretty girl. But to look at myself in the mirror and see a body that i dont feel belongs to me is heartbreaking. I just cut my pills in half and am going to go down to a half of a half in one week. I see the doc the 24th. I hope he puts me on wellbutrin cause i heard it gives you energy and helps loose weight. heard sex drive goes up to and my boyfriend would be happy lol. I am just having a bad day. I just have it in my mind to be sad right now cause i dont want to be fat. i cant be fat. i wont be fat. I REFUSE TO BE FAT!! i cryed today for the first time. im a mess..

Oh, sweetie. Hang in there. I know what you mean to look at a body and believe that it doesn't belong to you. Just maybe it doesn't. It belongs to someone who has gotten out of control a little bit. BUT you know that the real you is inside there somewhere. You just have to find her again. You will! She is in there.

Ashley, never cut your medication unless your doctor advised you to do so. There is only one week left until the 24th and you don't want to do more harm than good.

                Hi, Ashley

Of course, everyone reacts to medication differently. As someone who has been taking Wellbutrin for years, I will tell you this:

                1) It does not give me extra energy

                2) It did not help me lose weight. (I was on it for years when I weighed 215. Following Atkins to the letter is what finally made me shed the weight).

                3) While it did not make my sex drive go down further, it didn't increase it, either.

I would advise you to wait until you see your doctor before you start modifying your dose on your own. This is nothing to play around with.

                  Re: amitriptyline HELP ME FAST

Hrm, like Mitzi, I have been on wellbutrin for years... while I *do* think it helped me quit smoking, it has neither increased or decreased my sex drive, and it has (obviously) not helped me lose weight - the only thing that does is staying on track and exercising, and I don't have any extra energy.

Please listen to Georgiana about reducing your prescription without the Drs. advice. While tapering off is typically what they do, sometimes pills (usually SR/XL/XR versions) *cannot* be split without bad effects. It is also possible that they can taper you off *while* tapering you onto another so you do not have a period of depression during washout.

Make sure your Dr. knows that you want to lose weight and that the pills they put you on will not hinder this. Any psychiatrist should know that you are depressed about how you look and not be putting you on something that would impair it. It was one of the first questions I asked mine (especially when he increased the dosage).

I'm on prozac and I believe it does make it harder to lose weight....but I found out the hard way not to just stop taking it(although,it did kick the weight loss up..don't know if the two had to do with eachother) I can tell you, the abrupt change did seem to stop my TOM which was quite stressful until I figured out what was going on.

There is a tremendous amount of truth in that statement. One of my favorite quotes is, "Most people are about as happy as they make up their minds to be." A big part of being depressed is dwelling on everything that makes us unhappy, sad, mad and every negative part of our life and refusing to acknowledge the things that are going right in our life. Besides taking antidepressants to get our chemicals back in balance, we must try to find a few things every day to be happy about or at least grateful and thankful for.

As bad as you hate the "fat" and your body image right now, you really need to try to find several things each day that you like about your "self" as a person and about your life aside from body size--like that boyfriend. Practice being happy, even when you don't start out feeling happy. Fake it until you make it. If you force a smile on your face, soon you are smiling because you feel like it.

Trust me: feeling happy feels so much better than feeling sad and crying.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.
