  • Can this be right?

Ok, I'm plugging into fitday my menu for tomorrow so I can get it ready tonight, I plugged in the following, it just does not seem right

1 large egg (boiled) for breakfast
    2 cups iceberg lettuce (lunch)
    4 oz cucumber (lunch)
    1 oz mushrooms (lunch)
    1/2oz bacon (breakfast)

It tells me I've used up all of my percentage of proteing for the day with only 1 egg and 1/2 oz of bacon! Does that seem right, it seems people here are eating much more protein than that and still not going over their limit...does that sound right?

    Re: Can this be right?

Well, your percentage changes with what you eat... so if your percentage of protein is at 30, fat at 65, and carbs at 5 right now, it means those meals were perfectly balanced.

If you go and eat 5T of butter right now, the percentage of protein will go down (since it's percentage of calories from protein out of total calories)... Does that make sense?

Or, someone could eat 5 eggs for breakfast (and be at 30% protein), 5 eggs for lunch (still be at 30% protein) and 10 eggs for dinner (and *still* be at 30% protein.

You cannot "use" your percentages. You can only use your carbs or something that can be measured in grams or calories.

Let's say you eat 1 can of tuna. If you add only tuna in FitDay, it will show you 6% fat, 0% carbohydrate, 94% protein. Now add 2 tbsp of mayo to this, and you'll get 52% fat, 1% carbohydrate, 47% protein. Add 2 oz cream cheese and it will show you 64% fat, 2% carbohydrate, 34% protein.

Check those percentages only after you are done entering all your foods.

        I'M COMPLETELY LOST!!!!!

I plugged in an entire day of foods, it put me way over the percentages I needed so I changed it.

        1 large egg
        2 cups of iceberg lettuce
        2 oz of cucumber
        1 oz brussel sprouts

THAT'S IT FOR THE ENTIRE DAY!!!!

        Fat 49%
        Carbs 22%
        Protein 28%

I don't understand...nobody can live off of that for an entire day...what am I doing wrong?

Enter the meat and whatever else you are eating and then check the percentages again.

And tell us the number of calories, too. Otherwise it's difficult to understand what you are doing.

I took all the meats out because it told me my protein was far too high...I don't understand what you are saying, enter everything and post it?

BBB, I don't quite understand what you are basing your daily limits on. It doesn't fit with anything I know about Atkins. We don't have an ounce or gram limit on protein and fat. In fact, Dr. Atkins tells us to eat freely from the protein list.

              We only count carbohydrate grams.

Could you explain how you are determining that your protein goal should only come out to one egg a day?

If we understand that, maybe we can help.

ok, I added 1 oz of pork (pork chop) and 1 ounce of Haddock (I have no idea why one would only eat 1oz of either, seems like a waste of time to me).

Cals = 228 WHICH IS WAY WAY WAY TOOOOOOO LOW

                48% fat
                11% carbs
                41% protein

This is with just that little bit of food...I don't understand how to get more food into the percentages you gave me earlier...I did it for today...with 1,237 calories...what am I doing wrong?

Don't worry about the percentages. Don't worry about numbers.
Follow the rules in the book. Eat your fats, protein, veggie carbs just like it says.

When the day is over you can glance at the percentages. But for now forget about them.

                    Re: Can this be right?

I was told that I should keep my daily stats as follows:

                    fat 65%
                    carbs 5%
                    Protein 30%

the good thing is that fitday gives you those percentages once you've entered everything...the difficulty I am having is getting those numbers right

I've been told by more than one person here to keep my percentages at what I've listed above, my goal is to do a clean induction, as it should be done so that when I go into OWL I know I'm doing it correctly...Now I'm really confused.

Well you are doing it backwards. I would be confused too. Percentages are something we use at the end of the day. (Maybe - I glance at mine but they do not rule my diet or life )
So follow the rules of induction which is about foods. Eat your eggs, fish, meat, cheese, oils, fats, veggies. Measure your veggies, limit your cheese and cream and you are good. I promise

                          Re: Can this be right?

Okay. Here is what I had a few days ago (I'm on OWL Rung 3, so not everything is legal for Induction):

                          2 oz cream cheese
                          3 tbsp cottage cheese
                          20 slices of cucumber
                          0.75 cups radish
                          1.66 cups tomato
                          3 tbsp olive oil
                          2 tbsp vinegar
1 cup yellow and red peppers
                          10 oz turkey
                          3.5 cups lettuce
                          0.33 cups shredded mozzarella
                          1.5 oz Swiss cheese
                          0.75 oz salami
                          0.33 oz bacon
                          0.25 cup onion

After I entered all these in FitDay, I got:
                          1560 calories
                          101.2 g fat (58%)
                          35.1 g carbohydrate (8%)
                          10.3 g dietary fiber
                          125.9 g protein (34%)

So you have to enter everything first -- vegetables, meat, oil, butter, spices, cream, etc. Only after you entered all your foods look at the percentages.

Why would you only look at the end of the day, how do you know if you are getting too much of anything? I am trying to set out the menu and make sure I am getting the right percentages, then make the food ahead of time...if I wait until the end of the day to 'look' at my numbers and they are way off I'm not doing Atkins...right?
