  • REAL FLU during induction...

This isn't the induction flu. I started having a cough the day before I started, then the day I started I had a cough and a headache (which I thought was from no caffeine). Then yesterday, day 2, I had a sore throat, a headache, coughs, sneezes, fever, etc. It's not much better today. I don't feel like eating anything and I just want some water and V8 (haven't had any V8 though). I feel this is screwing up my "clean induction". How am I supposed to know if the weight I lose on induction is due to flu or due to induction? Should I just restart when I feel better? I am so upset with being sick right now because day 1 went perfectly!

    Suggestions?

It is a long journey honey and right now you are sick. Take your time to get better and then start. Make yourself a good chicken soup (without noodles if you are low carbing) and watch an old movie.

There is a thread in the "Low CArb Menues" forum that addresses doing Atkins while ill or recovering from an illness.

          Thank you for the replies

I will read the sticky about being sick on Atkins. I weighed myself and am down 4lbs since Monday and don't want to do anything wrong. So far, I have taken a sugar free cold-eez lozenge - didn't even know I had a box of those. I also made myself some chicken broth. After my broth is gone, I will read the sticky. I have been taking a multi-vitamin and will take it again today and of course continue to drink water.

Absolutely make some chicken soup, soothing hot tea w/splenda, etc. We add things like bean sprouts (Only 1.5 carbs per ounce) to ours to give it a noodle appearance. We also add our veggies at the last minute so that they don't get overcooked.

This is my 2nd time doing Atkins and during both experiences, had flu like symptoms during induction. (Sore throat, headache, achy all over, etc.) Maybe our immune system gets lowered a bit during this time and makes some individuals more susceptible? I would take some Motrin which will help with most of the symptoms and get some extra rest. Obviously if the fever continues, see a Dr., but I'm thinking it'll all pass in a couple of days once your body adjusts. (You should be starting to feel better by day 4 of the diet.) I would NOT quit the diet right now. After getting through this experience, the rest of it will be a breeze in comparison! (Not quite, but you know what I mean.)

Maybe try the meds first and see if that helps. Motrin never seemed to affect me when I was on the diet previously, but Benadryl & Nyquil definitely did, so be aware of what you're taking.

It's all your choice though. I just hope you feel better soon!
