Today is weigh in day at the doc's office! I have to show a loss...she will be so dissapointed if I don't (I gained last month) she might not monitor my weight loss if I don't...I've been doing all the right things so I'm positive on the one hand, but boy oh boy would I love to know for sure there is a good loss there...the scale in the gym is saying I've done well...biting my nails! I went around this monring looking for the clothing that weighs the least amount to wear...lol.

Then you have! Even if the doc's scale weighs you more than the gym scale, a difference is a difference... it's all relative. (my doc's scale always weighs me heavier than my home scale)

Let us know how it goes, OK?

oh I will! You, by the way, LOOK AMAZING!!!!! You did all of that on Atkins? Did you work out? How long did it take (no I'm not in a rush, but hearing success stories really inspires me).

I get this way every month. The first month I had a loss of 16lbs but was still afraid. I need these appointments, I liken it to WW's weekly weigh ins. My doc told me she would monitor me as long as I am losing, she will stop once I stop...so I'm always afraid I will disappoint her. Last month was a 5lb gain (I switched to WW - whcih she told me to do - and gained weight so she did not drop me) I was at 265 when I was there last, I did WW until I got up to about 274 and then came here...I've actually lost more than I am posting, but because my last weigh in was 265 and when I started doing Atkins correctly I was at 268 I did not want to post my original weight. For her I will have a 5lb loss (if her scale weighs me at the same weight as the gym) and she will be pleased with that, she wants to see around a 6-8lb loss monthly.

I've skipped breakfast and will probably skip lunch and then eat all my carbs/fat for dinner. I just don't want that scale to weigh what I stuff in my mouth. My appointment is at 3:45PM...I've been working hard for this, I only wish I had started back on Atkins the day I last weighed in...and come to this board because I can honestly say this is the first time in 8 years that I am doing it correctly...I feel good and am wearing a full size less than I was when I was last in her office, but I'm still nervous.

I appreciate the goal, but you shouldn't be skipping meals, especially breakfast. At least eat something small. Your body is going to switch to starvation mode if you make skipping meals a habit.

There is no such thing as starvation mode, my doctor put it pretty plainly, if it existed nobody would have starved in the concentration camps. But thanks for the input, I'm not quite sure where you got the idea that I am in any way making a 'habit' out of missing breakfast.

            Re: I'm Scared

Starvation mode is a slow down of metabolic rate. It is reality especially for women.

Starvation mode is not a technical term. However, your metabolism can slow down if you are skipping meals or not consuming enough calories. That is why very low calorie diets are not efficient. The slow down of the metabolism is what is referred to as "starvation mode." Obviously it doesn't mean that it is impossible to starve. If your body can't get the fuel it needs to run, it will cease to run. That doesn't mean that the rate at which it burns fuel doesn't fluctuate.

Again, thanks for the insight, starvation mode does not exist period. The body has many ways to protect itself, but not allowing you to lose weight when you lower calories is not something that actually happens, anorexics prove that wrong. Again, refer to the concentration camps. I will listen to my doctor on this one. Not to mention that missing a couple of meals will not make me starve, but again, thanks.

                  Re: I'm Scared

I think you may need a new doctor. At least do your own research.

In fact, DANDR has a story about an experiment with 2 groups. On group of people didn't eat for 10 days. The other group of people had a low carb, low cal diet. After 10 days, the second group lost more fat mass than the starving group. Does it really sound to you like the body didn't adjust for not eating?

Does logic dictate that your body will not adjust to changing food intake? It will, and it will quickly. Challenge your doctor on this and check his degree on the wall.

Added: BTW, the people in the concentration camps would have died much sooner without this "starvation mode".

Another thought -- I believe Dr. Atkins specifically said somewhere in his book not to skip meals, that it was very counterproductive. Somebody else will have to tell you the page number.

Is there some particular reason you won't let this go? I don't need a new doctor, you believe what you wish and I will also, when you can produce your medical degree I will listen to you, until then I will look at logic and listen to my doctor. Again, thank you for the input but obviously I disagree, and you know what, it's ok.

                          Re: I'm Scared

for the record bbb, a medical degree doesn't really mean jack.
I had a guy with a medical degree come into the ER and try to remove organs out of me when I was 16 before any x ray had even been done. 6 years of this Bullcrap and I went to a different doctor, and it turns out for a 15 dollar blood test I discovered I had an actively bleeding stomach ulcer, that these twits with their fancy medical degrees couldn't figure that out.
What everyone is trying to explain to you is that starvation mode is a fancy way of saying if you dont eat enough, your metabolism slows. It doesn't mean you'll drop dead right away if you stop eating. Go talk to some of those anorexic people you brought up. You'll find out their metabolism is completely screwed up now. Eating breakfast boosts your metabolism! Its a goood thing. I ate 2 fried eggs and fried squash in butter for breakfast this morning as as of right now, I weigh LESS than I did when I woke up. Don't let the scale -scare- you into not eating in a healthy manner. That's a very, very bad habit.

i am betting its very common for people to miss meals, to starve oneself ...all that does slow you down...

its scary taking the next step...

I'm not sure what logic supports the idea that skipping meals is fine, and I would be shocked to find a doctor that advocated skipping meals.

But you're correct - it's your right to skip all the meals you want and I'm dropping it right now (last post on this). If you want to make up your own version of the diet, that's fine. Good luck.
