  • Where's my KETOSIS????

After three weeks into Atkins, I'm not in Ketosis any longer. What happened?? I dont use the strips, but I can just tell, dont have that funny taste in my mouth, waking up hungry and craving carbs! How can I get it back. I think I will fail at losing anymore weight now. Last Saturday, my sisters 50th birthday party, I had 4 glasses of wine, some tosidtos with avocado dip and a 5 inch sub (took most of the bread off, not all) I still lost one pound this week, but lost my ketosis. Help Please.....Donna

    hi donna,
i experienced exactly the same things once i'd gotten into the swing of things ... think it was the 4th week i didnt have keto breath or smell as ripe as i did at the beginning ... i continued to lose though so i think it was probably just my body compensating or something...or just getting used to it ... sorry i cant be of any scientific assistance! i dont normally advocate keto-stick use, but they would have been helpful to me that week!

If you think that. You will fail. Period. I really don't mean to be harsh - but that's one thing that has stopped me in the past from truly being successful sooooo many times. We ALL have setbacks. We do. See my post below about Imitation Crabmeat from last night. I've been doing FABULOUS and last night I went out to our favorite sushi/seafood buffet and had some baked crabmeat as well as probably too much sodium (in general) and I'm up 2.5 pounds today. I have two choices. ni the words of Yoda - "Do or do not. there is no try"
Seriously - I can A. give up and say "Nope - it's not going to happen - I'm going to fail" or B. I can say "well, I made a mistake - had a set back - but damnit, I'm GOING to get to goal and in order to do that, I'm just going to continue doing what I've already learned and keep going. I REFUSE to give up and be fat."

I choose B. Why? well - because I have free will and I CHOOSE TO DO WHAT I KNOW IS RIGHT. I don't HAVE to give in and say "oops - i failed, may as well fail all the way".
Seriously - my fave analogy is this:
If you're driving down the road and you get a flat tire, are you going to go and shoot out the other three? No - you're going to fix it and keep going down the road.

You will constantly be in and out of ketosis on this woe. I know I am. Seriously - one day I'll have all the signs - be very dark purple ont he sticks - have one meal that has a bit higher carbs and the next day I'm out. But then I eat all my fat again and exercise and continue doing what this woe teaches and I'm back in again.

As far as how you ate at the party - not to be harsh - but you weren't following the plan. You NEED to realize that you must follow the plan the way it was written in order for it to work.

No Cheating allowed - not even a "little bit".

You CAN do this. The fact that you're here on the boards attests to the fact that you want the accountability and that you WANT to succeed.
If you really wanted to fail, you would. But I can tell you don't WANT to.
Food is JUST food. Look at it almost like it's just fuel. You know what "fuel" you need to put in your body in order to succeed...would you put sugar in your gas tank in your car? literally - would you?
It's the same thing with your body. Your body does NOT realize the difference between table sugar and sugar from carbs from bread or tostidos. to your body, sugar = sugar period.
Sugar is what makes us fat.

Re-read the book and get right back on track. you CAN do it!

        Re: Where's my KETOSIS????

If you cheated that much, of course you'd go out of ketosis. I don't know if you were out before or after this party, but that is a huge part of your problem. Start eating the way you are supposed to be eating again and hopefully it will start up again in a few days if that's where you need to be. For the record, you don't need to be in ketosis to lose weight.

However, you do need to do the diet by the book if you want to be doing Atkins. Even if it doesn't show up right away, it will catch up to you. A little cheat is like the gateway drug to going off plan completely, especially if you have the attitude/expectation that you will fail. Stick to it and you will succeed. It may be slow, it may not be everything you expect, but you will succeed.

The "4 glass of wine", "some tostitos" and "most of the bread off the sub" could have something to do with the fact you aren't in ketosis....none of these things are induction legal .... the only difference between induction and rung 1 is 5 additional veggie carbs.

Get back to basics and back on induction only foods. You will start losing again.

The Rules of Induction can be found here:

          good luck

Get right back onto plan, and in a few days, you'll be back. You cheated...tostitos, wine, a sub? Excessive carbs will knock you out of ketosis! Get back on that horse right now! And please get the thoughts of failure out of your mind, because you WILL fail if you think that way.

Wow, you guys are brutal! I know, I know I messed up but it was my sisters 50th birthday. You might want to look good, but you also have to keep in mind, we have to enjoy life too. I just started 3 weeks ago, and I have done a very clean induction. Also, I was right back on it the next day. I just don't know so much about the whole Ketosis thing, so I thought, I wasn't going to lose anymore weight since I cheated. By no means am I a quiter

                Re: Where's my KETOSIS????

When we cheat we get knocked out of ketosis. Sometimes it can take between 2 to 5 days to get back into ketosis... During that time you usually stay around the same weight.

Think about what you said... "we have to enjoy life too"

It's only been a couple of weeks for you, but after a couple of months, being able to have the control to stay on the diet during family events will make you 'enjoy life' while being good too...

At parties, there is always something to eat, even if it's only celery and carrot sticks... It's usually enough to get you through until your next meal...

Remember, everyone here wants you to succeed, which means being harsh and telling it like it is... It's only because we don't want to sugarcoat 'splendacoat'? the truth...

It's amazing you were able to get right back on it, not everyone can... You should be getting the skanky taste in your mouth back real soon

                  Re: Where's my KETOSIS????

Yes, you do have to enjoy life. However, there are other things to enjoy in life than food! I know that sounds like kind of a brutal response, but it is true. To be really honest, some of us can afford to cheat, others can't. However, if you cheat, it will most likely interfere with your progress.

Just because you are knocked out of ketosis does not mean at all that you can't lose weight anymore! Just hop back on the wagon and you'll be fine as long as you don't make a habit out of the cheating. In my experience, "just a little taste now and again" doesn't work.

Thank you all for your support. So now I know. You cheat, your ketosis goes away! I'm just so new to the whole dieting thing. Gratefully, never had to diet in my life til I hit the 40's (menapause..gotta love it). It's just a sad thing when you could eat whatever you wanted to in the past and now things have changed. So thanks again, gotta go and enjoy those delicious bacon and eggs
