  • someone explain this to me!

I got a health magazine in the mail. I didnt sign up for it but our mail carrier isn't the brightest crayon in the box because we constantly get other peoples mail, and my 30 day shred video I ordered almost 3 weeks ago -still- isnt here, when it said it shipped like 3 days after i ordered it. but i digress...

Anyhoo, i'm flipping through this health magazine, and it has these 'super healthy' recipes in the back. And 2 out of the 3 recipes i read had a sugar! talking 1/2 a cup of sugar. i really just don't get it. it reminds me of a girl i knew in high school who wanted to lose weight, so all she did was eat gummy bears because they had no fat. i kind of just want to smack these people in the forehead and go "helllooooooooooo!"

"return to sender" comes to mind on that magazine, but then that's just my thinking...lol.

I'm thinking you can call the post office and inquiry about such a delivery. I mean, if the postal person has a habit of "sharing" mail around the neighborhood, perhaps he/she might remembering where/if they delievered it. Just a thought...I've had to do that in the past myself and it worked.

    Best wishes.

I've heard it mentioned that is why so many are getting fat, it's because they're eating Diet foods. In so many low fat = higher sugar which still turns to fat and doesn't do anything for your body like the good fats would.

its insanity! i've seen girls scarfing down the afore mentioned gummy bears, or marshmellows, or any number of other crappy foods just because there was no fat in it. it boggles my mind.

It will catch up with them at some point. With females esp it seems like after puberty or the first child our body chemistry changes and the pounds are packed on.I have two daughters that are thin. The older one used to be able to eat that way til age 16 ,now almost 18 she needs to loose 20 pounds. My younger is 12 going on 13 and is still a stick though she is cutting down and eating more of the atkins style with meat and salad because she doesn't want to get any larger. She has yet to break the chocolate and soda habit though. She's @5'1" and a healthy 116 pounds.I ate junk like that and stayed at 130 pounds till my first pregnancy and then ballooned up to 289 range and have been fat ever since for coming on 18 yrs and can't seem to get it off.
Sugar is just as addicting as alochol or any other mild drug and the diet industry is making a killing from it because people will feed themselves all sort of excuses to stay on it.

Re: someone explain this to me!

I was one of those people in the mid 90's...before I read DANDR. I was big believer that "fat makes you fat" and you could eat low fat all you want and lose weight. So I made Kraft Mac n Cheese with no butter and skim milk and ate red vines and low fat cookies...cuz it was healthy. Kept eating it all the way up to 277 lbs.

Reading DANDR was life changing. Even in my off years not following Atkins, I still didn't "fear" fat...while on WW, I tried to work fat into the points system, but it was harder as it limited quantities and they were always pushing low fat therefor low point items. I also stopped buying bread all together...and only in the last year or two really started scarfing down pasta again.

            Started: 3/2/09

            ~280~270~260~250~240~230~220~210~200~190

            Realistic Final Goal: 190
            Stretch Goal: 140

Successfully did Atkins in 1998 using 1992 copy of the book...before it was "hip". Lost 60lbs, exercised daily, felt and looked great. And then I moved in with a junk-food loving man, my mom got sick and passed away, then I suffered a spinal cord injury, and junk-food dude left me...and now I weigh 292lbs. That's 22lbs MORE than I weighed the first time around. It's 10 years later...I know this will work for me again.

Re: someone explain this to me!

I would say we need to educate people of all ages as to the meaning of a healthy diet but after reading my step-daughters Nutrition book from high school 4 years ago and also talking to a dietitian 6 months ago I know that is like spitting into the wind...it won't do any good! She told me 12 "carbs" a day --15 carbs counted as 1 carb - ok that confused me to begin with but I went along with her. My fats were very low, I could have bread as long as it was the diet bread that 2 slices counted as 15...

It took so long to figure out what she was saying then she said something about deducting the fiber but never quite explained it fully then told me just to forget it...I spend most of my day figuring out what to eat, how to count it and watching the lock because I was "scheduled" to eat at 8:00 a.m./ 10:00a.m./ noon/ 3:00p.m./ 6:00 p.m. and 8:00...nothing to eat or drink after 8:00 in the evening. I was exhausted just trying to loose weight.

I love the fact that I could have had Atkins bars because the count was right -- it didn't matter that it's been known to stall weight loss.....the "COUNT" was right....sheesh!

The high school nutrition book went on and on about no fat foods and that by following a diet that has the lowest amount of fat you will loose weight without effort - so it doesn't surprise me to see people eating sugar free candies, twizzlers, gummy bears -- it's what they are being taught.

I like this plan so much better -- I don't spend all day worrying about food. All I do is spend the day living my life and loving the food!

Re: someone explain this to me!

The other day I started looking through the nutrition labels of diet foods that were still in the closet/freezer. Almost all of them had sugar, high fructose corn syrup, added starch, tons of processed junk. I mean looking back it seems pretty obvious. That stuff can't be healthy. Its funny how we're conditioned to think that the most obvious answer isn't necessarily correct.

The ridiculous part is that the calorie counts on most of the foods aren't much if any lower than what I generally eat on Atkins. Its no wonder most people have a lot of trouble losing weight when they're eating this junk!

Hear hear! When I am thinking about food it's with excitement at the choices I've got, the recipes I can try, and how great it tastes, plus how good it is for me!

one of my cousins lost a whole lot of weight when we were younger, like went from an 18 to a 4. I asked her how she did it, and she said "eating right and working out" but i found out later in reality all she did was weight watchers, and ate nothing but oreos in whatever 'point' amount for her day. When she got pregnant, she gained 80lbs, and never took them back off. I still catch her saying shes on a diet and see her eating things that are nothing but sugar.

Sugar has no fat! I used to eat jelly beans a lot as a teen because they had no fat.

One day the rest of the world just might catch on that sugar is really the culprit in making us obese.

I must say what a complete and total eye opener and life changer atkins really is...I've said in many posts before that I myself am a lifetime member of weight watchers - having lost a total of 60 pounds on WW going from 220 to 160 - yes, by eating oreos in whatever "point" amounts I had for the day.

And I always thought - as many other people here did - and as most of the "dieting" world does - that "fat is bad" and honest to god I never even LOOKED at the amount of sugar or carbs in food. ever. All I had to look at was Calories, Fat & Fiber. and yeah - it worked, because I basically STARVED MYSELF. I was always hungry and eating felt guilty - mainly because I knew I was "going over my points".

Seriously - asides from the weight loss I am having with Atkins - to me, Atkins is a HUGE eye-opener and life-changer because I'm actually learning that SUGAR is the culprit - NOT fat!

And yeah - I see all those "healthy" recipes out there that have 1/2 cup - 1 cup - etc, etc...of sugar and it drives me NUTS!

And that's another thing too - foods that are SO incredibly healthy for you - such as NUTS & AVOCADOS - I used to stay away from because there was too much fat. yet OREOS - as long as I had them within my "points" - or more specifically 100 calorie packs - I thought was HEALTHY because it was "portion controlled"...

I honest to god had NO idea about how sugar messes with your insulin and that INSULIN is what keeps/makes you fat and that sugar is what messes with it - NOT fat!

I still have to tell myself, "fat does not make you fat. SUGAR does" - I have changed my way of thinking in the past 3 months SO drastically that I still stop myself and have to think sometimes about it.

I could go on and on and on about this - but more than anything - it really saddens me that mainstream, "dieters" don't realize that SUGAR is the culprit - and that it's NOT that hard to give sugar up.

For me, I'd MUCH rather (and not just cuz i'm on atkins now) but i'd MUCH rather have a HUGE 8 oz steak for dinner with full fat cottage cheese & broccoli rather than eat something "low point" such as a 3 oz flavorless skinless chicken breast with exactly 1/4 cup of low-fat or (nasty) fat free cottage cheese just so I'd be able to have that sugary "diet" dessert.

wow. don't get me started! lol.

                          oh claire, jelly beans...
Im not a huge sweet tooth girl, but peach and pear flavored jelly beans are my absolute weakness. I used to eat those all through x mas or other holidays because there was no fat. no fat, amazing!

Once the doctor though I had a gallbladder infection (I actually had a stomach ulcer but didnt find that out till 2 years later) and told me I had to cut fat out of my life completely, forever. wtf. I spent the next week eating nothing but rice crackers and candy, and I was MISERABLE. right after that I started atkins, it was so nice to know I can eat real food, in a normal amount, and lose weight. Its magic lol
