  • "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

I was in the grocery store this morning and read the label of "Sugarfree" Cool Whip.

    Here's the break-down

20 cals per 2 tablespoon serving
    0 grams fat
    0 grams protein
    1 gram carbohydrate
    0 grams sugar

Ingredients: Water, corn syrup, hydrogenated oil (and I didn't read the rest.)

There was a disclaimer about the corn syrup: "Adds a trivial amount of sugar."

I have to admit there is no "sugar" listed in the ingredients, but corn syrup is still a type of sugar!

So beware folks, be very aware!

Oops...that should be 3 grams carbs, but 0 grams sugar (because corn syrup isn't sugar......)

Megs, I'm glad that you posted this. I have noticed this very thing on many products, lately. Hmm... Sugar-free, and yet, it contains corn syryp.

I remember when Joy was having so much trouble losing some stubborn pounds. And then one day, she saw the person filling the "unsweetened" tea container and was able to read the label it came from. It had corn syryp in the ingredients label. She had been drinking a lot of that tea. She stopped, and was able to drop those pounds.

REMEMBER TO READ THE INGREDIENTS LABEL, PEOPLE!!!

        Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

this is very frustrating to me - especially whipped cream and sorts.

I make my own jello with unsweetened kool-aid but i can't use cool whip or even redi whip cuz it's got corn syrup and/or hydroginated oils.

one thing, though - that REALLLLLY burns me that they put corn syrup in is MEAT!!!!!!!
Now I know most sausage is processed - but i look at sausage links and SO many has corn syrup!! it makes me angry that they put corn syrup in meat!
        grr.

        k. thanks! lol

              Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

That "sugar free" Cool Whip has been burning me since I first started Atkins! I was with eDiets at that time, and we were told that it was okay to eat the "sugar free" Cool Whip. I was a part of a group of Atkinseers that was doing "whole foods" as much as possible.

There was a big discussion about whether it was okay to eat or not, so I went to the grocery store to check it out. I brought the results back to prove that it was not okay. It has more calories and carbs than the original.

I have made it my goal in life never to buy or support in any way any company that "hides" sugar or MSG in any way behind deceptive wording. The companies that hide sugar by calling it evaporated cane juice should be put out of business. Evaporated cane juice is table sugar. A pig by any other name...
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

All the sausages I looked at today had corn syrup in them and very high in the ingredient list.
Yes that is a good reminder Megs that sugar free is a very interesting claim.
Diet Orange Crush used to have HFCS in it. Still may. I just have not checked lately

Putting aside the sugar-in-sausage issue for a moment, the sodium nitrite in most of them makes the sugar issue look like nothing. I wondered why Dr. A recommended nitrite-free bacon/sausage/meats, etc, and after I read up on it, my eyes were opened.

                    Re: "Sugarfree" Cool Whip

Another deceptive practice started when they were forced to list ingredients in the order of most to least. Some programs, like WW, tell you to look at the label, and if sugar is fourth on the list, then it is okay to eat.

So....the food industry changed their recipe or in some cases, just changed what they called "sugar" to break it up so it would no longer be the first or second ingredient on the list. They started breaking it down by listing sugar, dextrose, corn syrup, HFCS, brown sugar, molasses and so on, individually, so the total was divided up into smaller quantities and appear farther down the list.

I need to go meditate to get my blood pressure back down!

what IS the deal with sodium nitrates? why are they so bad? off to do a google search, I guess (still would like an answer though - for other people who don't know!)

ok, after i first posted, i found this on the wikipedia site:
Sodium nitrate is used as an ingredient in fertilizers, pyrotechnics, as a food preservative, and as a solid rocket propellant, as well as in glass and pottery enamels; the compound has been mined extensively for those purposes.

wow. something that is used in fertizlizers, pyrotechnics, solid rocket propellant, glass & potter enamels?????? we're eating something that is put into all of THAT???!!!!! that's insane!

The label gave me a good chuckle in the frozen aisle. Then I began to wonder....why not whip your own cream? There wasn't a huge price difference between the Cool Whip and a pint of heavy cream.

Anyhow, read those labels. When Breyers originally came out with their low carb ice cream, the second ingredient was HIGH FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP and SUGAR was listed in the number 4 or 5 spot. Splenda was the last ingredient. lol

I have noticed that with the "sugar free" jams and pancake syrups that display a big "Splenda sweetened" graphic on the front only contain a tiny bit of Splenda and a bunch of sugar alcohols. The sugar alcohols are first on the label and Splenda dead last. While not an actual lie, it's a close second to a lie.

Well, even I didn't know that.

You should google "sodium nitrite" (i, not a). That's the one that had me concerned. There seems to be two sides to the story, but this is the link that started my research: Processed meat consumption results in 67% increase in pancreatic cancer risk, says new research by Mike Adams the Health Ranger. There are scientists out there who don't think that sodium nitrite (as used in our food supply) is any threat. So, YMMV....

Here's what wiki has to say, in part:

A principal concern of sodium nitrite is the formation of carcinogenic nitrosamines in sodium nitrite containing meats exposed to high temperatures. Sodium nitrite's usage is carefully regulated in the production of cured products in the United States as the concentration in finished products is limited to 200 ppm, and is usually lower. In about 1970, it was found that ascorbic acid (vitamin C) inhibited nitrosamine formation.[citation needed] Consequently, the addition of at least 550 ppm of ascorbic acid is required in meats manufactured in the United States. Manufacturers sometimes instead use erythorbic acid, a cheaper but equally effective isomer of ascorbic acid. Additionally, manufactures may include alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) to further inhibit nitrosamine production. Alpha-tocopherol, ascorbic acid, and erythorbic acid all inhibit nitrosamine production by their oxidation-reduction properties. Ascorbic acid for example, forms dehydroascorbic acid when oxidized, which when in the presence of nitrous anhydride, a potent nitrosating agent formed from sodium nitrate, reduces the nitrous anhydride into the nitric oxide gas.[2]
Finally, regardless of what conclusions one may draw from the research, Dr. A. says to avoid sodium nitrite, so that's what I try to do...
