  • surprises on atkins?....

are any of you surprised to find a food you used to stay away from (for one reason or another - not just fat content, but any reason at all) that you absolutely LOVE now?...

One thing - for me - is I always stayed away from red and yellow peppers - and yet i LOVE snacking on them now. they are SOOOOO incredibly SWEET.

    anyone else?

My taste in food changes immensely when I'm on Atkins. I don't crave food I usually do, and I crave and dream about food, like salad, that I never used to even like!

How much time do you have to read?

      Butter
      cream cheese (gag-inducing before Atkins)
      sour cream (ditto above)
      mayonnaise (ditto above)

Brussels sprouts--I ate them maybe once a year before Atkins--now at least once a week. I crave them.

Cooked cauliflower--I liked it raw, but not cooked--love it cooked now

Cooked turnips--this is the only veggie from my childhood (grew up on a farm) that I remember hating. I loved them raw, but when mom would boil potatoes with turnips, I tried my best to not get any turnip and had to spit out any I failed to detect. Now, I use cooked turnip in place of potato all the time, and can't tell the difference.

Fat on any meat. I used to take a scalpel to the fat before I got a chance to get any in my mouth. It still needs to be brown and crispy, but I love it.

Red and yellow peppers were my treat when I started Atkins--my reward for giving up my favorite foods. I've always loved them, but they were so expensive to buy in the store, they were a very rare treat. When I started Atkins, I bought at least two a week as a replacement for high carb favorites. The rule was, if I went off Atkins, the peppers had to go.

I grew them last year and was rewarded with the most beautiful peppers I have ever grown. I don't like them at all green, so I have a long wait for them to ripen. I froze the bulk of them, and have been using them all winter in recipes, stir-fries and barely thawed in salads.

Hah - I saw this post and instantly thought 'turnips!' I see that Sunny is a turnip fan too! Like you Sunny, I loved them raw when I was younger - straight out of my cousin's garden, with the dirt just rubbed off on the grass! As an adult I have hardly ever eaten them. Now I use them several times a week - mashed, roast around the chicken, in bubble & squeak, mixed with other veg in veg gratin, in the slow cooker to replace potatoes in casseroles, grated raw in salads - yum, we just love 'em!
