  • hypoglycemia/panic attacks Need Advice!!

    Hi All,
Day 6 of clean induction- eating every few hours, exercise, h20. In Ketosis since end of day 2--big spillage of ketones since day 4. I have lost 6 lbs in 6 days and feeling pretty good. Problem is today I suddenly became very nauseous, fidgety,panickly--all the classic hypo. symptoms. It developed into a full on panic attack- this was about 1 hour after my breakfast of 2 eggs, 4 slices bacon, and coffee with heavy cream.
I'm not sure what to make of it. When I started to feel faint, I ate 6 grapes and 2 really small bites of melon (probably 5-7 carbs total) and within a couple of minutes I feel almost normal. I realize this means my induction is no longer "clean", but at least I didn't faint!!
Anyone else have these problems? How do you handle it? Do you think I should continue with the small serving of the fruits if this happens again? Should I go ahead and add some fruit, preferably berries, to my daily diet to prevent this? Also, hydration is not a problem THANK YOU IN ADVANCE!!!!

I would do what is necessary to not have the faint and dizziness. If that means some berries, then that is what you do. IMO

Mom -- I am a Type 2 diabetic -- if and when I have felt a little dizzy on this WOE I went and ate a stalk of celery with cream cheese or a few radishes and sat down for a few minutes. It isn't off plan and will give you the lift you need more than berries. You are putting too much sugar into your system to quickly. When you are diabetic the doctor will tell you to drink 4oz of orange juice and eat a couple vanilla wafers - when I was first diagnosed I would try this but it make me nausous and I would throw up -- I learned to eat celery or radishes (probably any type of veggies would do) that works better for me.

You say hydration is not a problem -- how much water are you drinking each day? There are also meds you can take for panic attacks if those are truly what you are experiencing. You don't say what your weight is or how many carbs you are eating per day maybe it's what you are eating. You might want to post a few actual days menus here also.

      Good luck
      Carole

What number was your blood sugar? There are low carb snacks that you can have that should stop the low blood sugar problems...

Nauseous, fidgety, and panicky doesn't sound like low blood sugar to me... unless it was very very low... in which case it is usually preempted by lack of food or some other such thing...

Atkins should 'cure' your LBS as long as you stay on it... eating fruit while on it defeats the purpose of doing Atkins in the first place...

What do you think triggered the attack?

I've experienced panic attacks (dizziness, depersonalization, lump in throat, etc.) symptoms on and off for several years. I don't believe that they are related to my diet. I have them more when I am under stress, and they are triggered by certain situations (bright light, cold, etc.). If you have just started having them, I'd start to document when they happen and potential triggers. I'd also talk to you doctor. They may be more related to stress than eating.

            Re: hypoglycemia/panic attacks Need Advice!!

Thank you everyone for your replies!!
I talked to my next door neighbor (a doctor) he thinks I should up my carbs just a bit. BTW, he's very supportive of my diet!. Anyway, I have done Atkins many times in the past always with excellent results. I am fortunate that my ACE range is on the high end. So he (and I) think maybe under 20 grams is a bit low for me. I am going to up it to 30g per day using veggies and see how it goes. One BIG factor---I am running now 30-40 minutes per day. When I have low carbed in the past I did other aerobic activity but not as strenuous as running.
As far as panic attacks--I'm very familiar with them!! Have lived with them for 15 years now. I only have a couple a year now and when I do I take a Xanax. In 15-20 minutes I'm fine. Yesterday, I took a Xanax and nothing! That's why I really don't think it was a panic attack. It was definitely symptoms of hypoglycemia. Nervousness, anxiety, weak, shaky, sweaty--textbook symptoms according to neighbor! I ate the fruit and felt SO much better right away. Carole, I am ready today with pre-made celery and cream cheese!! Anyway, I felt fine the rest of the day and I'm about to climb aboad the treadmill right now so we'll see how goes today. Also, dear neighbor lent me a blood glucose monitor so if an "attack" happens again I am ready!
            Thanks again everyone!!

I think that sounds like a good plan.

Dr Atkins talks in DANDR of 'ascent weakness' and suggests upping the veg so I think you are on the right track
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
