  • Coconut Milk (unsweetened)?

Does anyone drink unsweetened coconut milk? I bought some from whole foods today. Nutrition facts state:
    50 calories
    5 g fat
    5 g saturated fat
    total carbs 1 g
    fiber 0 g
    sugars 0 g
    protein 1 g

INGREDIENTS: Coconut Cream (Water, Coconut Guar Gum), Calcium Phosphate, Magnesium Phospate, Carrageenan, Vitamin A Palmitate, Vitamin D02, L-Selenomethionine (Selenium, Zinc Oxide, Folic Acid, Vitamin B-12

It also says, "The body needs a variety of fats for healthy cell function. Consumption of "good fats" is an important part of a balanced diet. Coconut milk contains 65% medium chain fatty acids (MCFAs). Amongst a number of unique properties associated with MCFAs is the fact that they are not readily stored but rather used as energy in the body."

I'd like to consume MCFAs but i don't like eating coconut oil straight - this HAS them as it is coconut milk.

The brand is "all Natural SO Delicious" unsweetened.

    anyone drink this?

I use coconut milk in cooking only. For example, some Southeast Asian dishes require coconut milk. But I don't swig the stuff down.

It looks like they added alot of thickeners and other stuff to the coconut milk you have.

Also plug the nutritional info into a hidden carb calculator....off hand, the calories don't add up.

well - according to the hidden carb calc on linda's site there's only 0.25 g carbs. that's cool.

I actually just had it with my pre-workout snack/lunch: (peanut butter & jelly 'sandwich')

1 flax seed meal bun (I think I've figured this is actually 1.5 g digestible carbs) = 1.5 g net carbs
      1 tbsp natural peanut butter (3 carbs, 1 fiber) = 2 g net carbs
1 tbsp splenda sweetened kroger brand strawberry jelly (4 carbs, 3 fiber) = 1 g net carbs
TOTAL carbs = 4.5 g net carbs for the sandwich and 0.25 g carbs for the coconut milk.

I KNOW that that sandwich isn't exactly "balanced" since I had no veggees - but I have been CRAVING pb & j and this was the best i could come up with! lol. so a PB&J sammich with "milk" for under 5 carbs?
and i only allowed myself this because I'll be going spinning tonight.

as far as the taste though, it's interesting - really no FLAVOR to it - very very bland - but I drank it because of the MCFAs. we'll see if it hinders me or not. (not that this turtle has lost much the past two weeks...lol)

Have you considered using coconut oil to make the flax seed bun? That should up your MCFA too I would have thought.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I use it for cakes made with coconut flour, but I have had it as a drink- added cocoa powder and sweetener- like a very thick shake! I get 'Thai Kitchen' full fat coconut milk.

I just drink it straight out of the coconut, when I am in a tropical place. I am not sure about its nutritional value but it is delicious. Mine is clear liquid, some coconut milk looks milky, I wonder what the difference is. Anybody know?

The clear stuff in the cavity of a coconut is the coconut water.

Coconut milk is made by grating the coconut flesh, adding hot water to it and squeezing out the grated coconut. It's whitish in color.

Fitday has an entry for coconut water - it has 1 gram fat/2 grams protein/6 net carbs per cup, as compared with coconut milk which has 57 grams fat/5 grams protein/8 net carbs per cup.

keriann - I just got an email from the Turtle Mountain/So Delicious people about their new coconut milk beverage. Is this the same thing you bought? I'm interested in trying it as well.
I like my milk raw, my eggs pastured and my beef grass-fed.

Yup!!! Exactly what I bought - I got mine from whole foods.

I've been using it to make my flaxseed meal breakfast - instead of water, I use the coconut milk.
