  • Food Allergy

Good morning to All. I have a question perhaps someone can help answer. Yesterday I had a pretty severe reaction to avocado/canned crab (not sure which one) with hives, swelling in lips, eyes, and THROAT, to the point where I had to go over CPR technique with hubby in case I went into full anaphylactic shock, if the 3 Benadryl I took failed. I will see doc Mon and inform him so as to zero in on the culprit but I was curious if anyone who was on Atkins noticed an increased chance to food allergy. I would refer to my DANDR but it sits in storage and will order a new one Friday so I dont have to go thru half million books in storage!

In the past, with avocado (and bananas) my mouth tingles and I get a fat lip, but nothing so severe as last night. And the reaction didnt come on for 3 hours after I ate the crab salad/avocado cup, and wonder if the 140 oz water I drank may have prolonged it. Any discussion on this would be greatly appreciated!

Im broken-hearted to think, after 38 years of eating crab and avocado, that I may now be severely allergic to one, but I understand that you can enjoy things many times before you become sensitized.

I am not deterred one bit, but I believe my round with Atkins Induction is kicking my butt. I am over Induction flu, immediately got bronchitis (still fighting that) and now this. Its not to say Id rather be a skinny dead person than alive and fat,.. but I am NOT coming off induction! Guess I'll have to kiss avocados and crab goodbye. <weeps>

    Re: Food Allergy

A food allergy starts with oral symptoms such as itching and swelling of the mouth and then progress to throat obstruction with respiratory difficulties if the culprit is continually ingested over time.

    Latex allergy and food

Around half of all people with latex allergy have allergic reactions when eating particular foods including avocado, banana, chestnut, kiwifruit, passionfruit, plum, strawberry and tomato. This is because some of the proteins in latex that cause latex allergy are also present in these fruits.

Common symptoms include tingling in the mouth, stuffy nose, itchy eyes and wheezing.

Have you noticed these symptoms with any of the other foods listed above? Have you ever noticed a reaction to latex gloves?

      Re: Food Allergy

I wonder what the doctor will say. I think sometimes with continued exposure we may increase our allergy. The fact that you are trying to alter your body chemistry may have something to do with it but I have a couple of food allergies (certain nuts) none of those have become worse nor have I come across postings here on the board of it happen to other people.

My mother in law had been able to eat shellfish all her life, then as an adult had the same reaction you did while on an airplane after eating shrimp and has had to cut out all shellfish since (it's been about 20 years i think since that happened). :-(

          Re: Food Allergy

          TY so much for replies.

MsAjelpie: As a matter of fact, I do have a latex allergy. I have always known I was "a little allergic" to avocados, bananas, and tomatoes, but the reaction was so mild, with just having tingling and itching in mouth and the fat lip thing was kinda' cute, certainly not worth giving up avocados, but last night was NOT cute!! I LOOKED LIKE WIL SMITH ON "HITCH"!!!! I appreciate the info on the correlation between the latex/avocado allergy and Im sure thats the last one I'll ever get.

Liv: Its a relief to know this isnt a common thing with Atkins. I just wasn't sure. Why it spiraled out of control now might just be coinkydink. I am sure that me avoiding avocado will be 100xs easier than you avoiding certain nuts. (I have a few nuts around here, but all I have to do is tell them to go to bed!!)

Sadie: If the Gods love me one ounce,. they wouldn't dare curse me with both avocado AND shellfish allergies,.. but it was definitely on my mind. I think with all your help, I can safely deduce it was the avocado, however, will definitely get confirmation from doc,.. I never-never-EVER want this to happen to me again!!

Thanks again for your help,.. now,.. crab and butter: HERE I COME! (if ya'll dont here from me,.. it was the crab!) lol
