  • Anyone know anything about syndrome X?

I have been trying to figure out what is wrong with me it seems for the longest time now. (Because I feel like crap all the time)

    Quick little backround....
Am on thyroid meds and just started taking isocort because it turns out my adrenals are shot and my levels are reeeaaalllly low...but was told that isocort is only good short term-a temporary fix, that I needed to check out this other thing that will actually help support the adrenals....

So as I am doing a little on-line researching I came across this article called syndrom X...OMG, I think most of my problems have basically been from this syndrome!!!
CND: The Prediabetic Epidemic (Prediabetes; Syndrome X)
Check out the recommended diet, Sheeeesh it's pretty much ATKINS!

I always felt so "in the know" regarding anything dietary related....NOT!, this really seems like something I should have known about - owning a gym and all.

And it pisses me off that even thou my blood tests show that I am "prediabetic"... none of the many doctors I have seen these this past year and a half have set me down and given me the scoops! The last guys just said, "eat more protien." Can you believe it?

Anyone else ever heard of this term syndrome X?

What I know about it comes straight from the Atkins book, the chapter about protecting your heart. It is scary stuff, the hyperinsulinism and the terrible things it does to the body.

You might also like Dr. Atkins book on Vitanutrients. It sounds like your system could use some real shoring up. But I can tell you that you are very likely to feel an incredible amount better doing Atkins.

syndrome X is also close to Insulin Resistance & Metabolic Syndrome (I honestly haven't figured out the exact differences)...

I am insulin resistant which basically means that my body makes an over-abundance of Insulin and when that happens, my insulin basically BLOCKS my cells from burning fat and instead STORES it - which in turn keeps me "fat"...and makes it pretty impossible to lose weight.

it's also a pre-curser to diabetes, but to keep on a low-carb diet (atkins) it's possible to reverse the disease and make sure diabetes does NOT become an option!
      Find my blog at: http://keriannmb.blogspot.com/

Diagnosed Insulin Resistant in October 2007.
      Committed to Atkins January 2009.

      Current Month: February 2010 - 163lbs

Ah, best recollextion I have is something along the lines of it is one of the things that being on the Atkins diet is the best treatment for, whatever you want to call the complex of those compound metabolic disturbances.

All I can say for sure is Atkins works wonders to improve the overall metabolism & health when done properly!

I believe they are all the same thing or very closely interrelated. As far as I understand (and I've been to several doctors for it) insulin resistance describes just that... your body's tolerance/resistance to insulin. Metabolic Syndrome and Syndrome X describe basically that and its effects on the body.

People generally don't know about syndrom x because medical health professionals would rather turn their heads and look the other way when it comes to the fact that for many if not most people, the amount of carbohydrates eaten by people in our society is killing us. They will say you need to lose weight, that you are prediabetic, that you need to stop eating SUGAR, but generally will not suggest cutting out starchy veggies, fruit, pasta, and bread. Those are supposed to be the mainstays of our diet and that is probably why the problem is so widespread.

In recent years, medical professionals have become more vocal about using whole grains which is a step in the right direction, but when you already have a problem, it does not do much to combat it. I only know this from the research that I've done and my own experience, so that may not be true for everyone but that is just my two cents.

Its a really serious problem and doesn't get enough attention. It raises your risks for so many diseases. However, the medical community generally only looks at those risks to be a result of obesity rather than looking at the real underlying problem. If more people knew about it, I'm sure you would see more people taking Atkins seriously.

Peej, the last 2 Doctors that did my blood work said "eat more" protien and cut back on sugars. Hmph!

Given my symptoms ... depression, massive sugar craves, serious fatigue etc, I am extremely disappointed neither of them did not take the conversation further! I could have been on this track much sooner!

                Thank momtomany,

Yes, I am pretty motivated...I am tired of feeling like crap.

I have not been in the kitchen this much since I don't know when! The bummer is the clean up. But other than that I have zero complaints. Its a pretty easy way of eating.

Its wonderful that you were able to find your way. I feel bad for those who don't get the full story and don't find what works for them. I did what my doctor said for years and gained all the extra weight doing it. I still lose slowly but at least its coming off. That is a miracle for me. Atkins is really a godsend for those of us with these issues.
