  • Coconut Oil = darker Ketostix?

I read about coconut oil on the boards a few days ago and decided to try it for myself. I'm eating about 3 tbsp a day -- on day 3 of this.

Previously, my ketostix would turn the lightest shade of pink after 15 sec. Now, they turn dark purple immediately. At first, I thought maybe I was dehydrated (and I may have been a little on the first day), but I've been drinking 100+ oz of water a day, so I don't think that's it.

Is the coconut oil somehow affecting my ketosis, and is this bad or good?

Sadly, I've actually put on about 2lbs in the last 3-4 days. I was hoping it was water weight, but it hasn't gone away yet. I'm getting frustrated. I would blame the coconut oil, but it really started before that.

I use coconut oil everyday and haven't experienced what you are talking about -- but I also don't eat as much as you are. I cook with it and occassionally put some on my finger and eat it that way but as far as eating 3 Tbsp a day -- I'm sure I don't come close to that.

I haven't heard of anyone else gaining weight with it but I'm sure it could happen, anything is possible. Sorry I can't help more.

I've read in several other threads that 3 tbsp a day was the ideal amount. Fortunately (I guess!), it's easy for me to eat this much because I like the taste & even the texture. It's kind of like eating butter.

absolutely!!! if you read up on coconut oil - it has what is called "MCFA's" Medium Chain Fatty Acids - which PROMOTES ketosis. MCFAs are supposed to help raise the body temperature and metabolism.
Now i'm not saying that's the "magic pill" because being in ketosis doesn't always 100% mean that you're burning fat every second...but that's what MCFA's are meant to do as far as PUTTING you IN ketosis.

So... should I keep up my 3 Tbsp a day?

Re: Coconut Oil = darker Ketostix?

The thing is 3 tablespoonful of oil must be over 300 calories. Although we don't need to count calories the same way as on other diets, I usually have to remind myself that the body doesn't know that it is not suppose to count them. The body uses the calories one eats to fuel the energy spent in living and activities.

If you do Fitday to put in how much you consume and how much you use up, it gives you an idea as to how you are doing energy wise on a daily basis. It might show you what is happening.

I wasn't saying you shouldn't eat that much I was saying I personally don't eat that much but even when I have managed to get that much down I haven't gained weight.

Sugarfree-- I haven't read of anyone else having a burning sensation in the back of their mouth after eating coconut oil .... but obviously I don't know much!! LOL

I also use coconut oil - I love it for everything! I cook with it, put it in my tea, in my face cream, in my body lotion, give a bit to my dogie - I was eating it outright and couldn't get enough when I first got it, but now I can have it or not straight.

As for the additional calories, Atkins is, after all, a fat based diet, especially during induction. I don't think if you're following Atkins as written, the coconut oil would put any weight on you.

Its not a terrible "burn" its just a quick temporary feeling when it hits the back of my throat. It happens with ONLY this oil. I have used Nutiva and Wholefoods organic and they both do this...a bit strange but I still love it...I love the taste of it. And this oil is VERY good for the skin. SO is jojoba oil! ...but dont eat the jojoba! lol

I have a favorite thing I make with the coconut oil. I sautee mushrooms , chopped celery and onions in it and then I serve that over grilled pork chops..It gives it the BEST flavor! LOVE IT!!!!!
