One thing I did not mention....Before I got all excited about the weight loss aspect of the atkins diet, I had been feeling really quite terrible off and on for years, and very noticeably since I gave up drinking....tired all the time - REALLY tired, moody, emotional with kind-of a low grade depression...and all kinds of other weird stuff....before I would just drink every afternoon/evening to not feel it.

When recently troubleshooting why I felt so bad with my doctor, he told me that my glucose levels were high and that I needed to eat more protein (really that is what he said-just that, "eat more protein"). I talked to my girlfriend about it and she said once again.... Atkins!

You see, she told me 3 or 4 years ago I should give it a whirl given my symptoms (above mentioned)....But I told her there was no way I could do it because of my drinking prob...that I was not willing to give up yet. Plus I thought it was a joke of a diet...all that fat and meat...GROSS! My history is fasting, cleansing, tofu, lots of brown rice, semi vegetarian at one point, low fat, you know health food store nut...so in my mind, Atkins just can't be healthy for anyone!

Since I have been eating this way, I can not believe how many of my "symptoms" have been in my mind, miraculously disappearing...and it's only been a week....even my heartburn is starting to subside! Which blows me away with all the rich foods I have been eating. I have also found something on the web called syndrome X that sounds like me basically. It sort describes pre-diabetes or hypoglycemia...CND: The Prediabetic Epidemic (Prediabetes; Syndrome X) and check out the recommended way of eating....looks very much like atkins maintenance! I am happy to be in the right place!!
And it pisses me off that the docs did not really point me in any direction regarding this!!!

    Re: Syndrome X

Your symptoms sound very much like Candida yeast overgrowth. I bet you would feel incredibly better if you did a yeast cleanse diet. It's just a little stricter than induction, but you only need to do it for 14 days.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

      Re: Syndrome X

      Hi Sunny,

I am candida educated as we had a naturopathic doctor do ongoing workshops about candida at the gym I owned for a few months.....I assumed I had candida because of all the beer I drank for years, and all the sugar I had been consuming this past year or so. But my test came up negative.

Trust me I was very surprised myself! I am extremely lucky not to have candida overgrowth-given my sugar intake!! The doctor said it's probably because of the daily doses of high quality probiotics that I have been taking for years....Also I don't think I have been on antibiotic's but maybe once in my life when I was a kid and have never had to do steroids, these factors also probably contribute to the candida staying at bay.

He did find that along with the high glucose lvls, my saliva test showed very very low cortisol levels throughout the day. He gave me some cortisol supplements and I felt sightly better from those, but really, It was not until Wednesday this past week, I noticed not experiencing some of my weird symptoms!!! Its the diet I am quite positive! Thanks for chiming in, soooo many people don't know about candida!
