  • Stomach pain :(

    Hi All

I have had the same problem for the last 4 weeks and its not getting any better despite visits to the doctor 3 times already and two lots of different medication that do not work at all. I've been on atkins for about 10 weeks and my sypmtoms started around week 6. I have pains radiating about a 2" radious around my belly button. The pain comes on anything from 1 to 1.5hrs after eating and feels like i've been winded for about 2.5 to 3hrs afterwards. Its very very painful and makes me want to lay down and rub my tummy which doesn't really help but take my mind of the pain. But feels like my intestines are in knots.

I am not constipated or lose and go every other day with no probs, am drinking plenty of water lots of veg and salads and not preg or have period pains so non of them.

I have wrote here previously when I first went got the pain and went to the doctor and got medication which I though would cure the pain but to after two different meds hasn't done anything. I told my GP I was on the atkins diet to whic he replied that on any diet where you are cutting a food group out yoy may get problems he also said it wasn't very healthy and I tried to explain but he was very sceptical.

He has said that I should ge back next week and if it hasn't gone I should think about changing my diet. I have also kept a food diary and on the odd occasional day that I don't get any pain I have compared but cannot see any probs.

I love having control over what I am eating and I love the diet (lost 1st so far . But and getting constant nags from my family, friends and now GP to change my diet.

Any ideas please I really don't want to come off Atkins. Has anyone had food intolerance since on atkins. I've always eaten these food groups just not so many all the time.

    Re: Stomach pain

When facts don't add up in astronomy, we usually blame it on magnetic fields, just because we know nothing about them. I think it is common practice in science to blame what you cannot explain on things that you do not know enough about. In my opinion, your doctor is one of those that does not support/understand Atkins, so he found a scapegoat for your health problems.

Anyway... rant over because it doesn't help you.

Could you ask another doctor for a second opinion?

About food intolerances. Many of us have lived with them for years and never knew we had them before introducing the culprit foods back into our diet. The only idea I have is that you eliminate the food(s) you introduced when your pains started and see if that makes a difference.

      Re: Stomach pain

Have you introduced anything the last four weeks that my be causing this. I have some food allergies - but not food intolerances so I don't know how that may affect a person. But this really sounds like it need a serious investigation. I don't think just changing the macro relationship is causing this - if it is food it is probably something specific.
Maybe someone else has more insight.
I hope you figure it out soon

        Re: Stomach pain

if you only did a 2 week induction by week 4 you should have been on rung 1 or 2 -- what did you introduce back into your diet that you didn't eat before that? Dairy or did you add nuts?

What type of exercise are you getting? Instead of laying in bed rubbing your stomach try taking a walk and getting your mind off the pain. I had horrible pains before, during and after TOM when I had them -- we found out it was from endometriosis plus I had a C-section when I was 19 and the scar tissue was causing a lot of my pain also.

I ate dairy all my life but after I introduced it back the first time I went up the rungs it didn't agree with me so I stopped eating it - it was disgusting tasting and made my stomach upset. This time up the rungs I've been able to add cottage cheese with no problem. You might be experiencing something like that.

As far as your doctor not agreeing with this WOE -- to begin with we eliminate foods that cause addictions and add healthy vegetables and fats. We gradually add foods back and find what we can and cannot eat -- I never understand why that makes doctors nervous -- because we stop eating bread, sugar & milk??? Take your DANDR book with you and ask him to read it -- if he refuses then you will never get through to him. My mothers oncologist is who told me about Atkins to begin with so at least 1 of 3 doctors is for it!

        Good luck
        Carole

I'd urge you to get a second opinion. It's probably nothing serious, but you need to have the mystery sorted out.

            Re: Stomach pain

            check out my post here

im very confident as what i said in there and all the foods to avoid will greatly help you

you may have increased eating foods that upset your gut while on the atkins diet such as mayo it has vinagur and that really big time upsets guts

or you may have been eating too much polyunsaturated omega-6 vegetible oils they are very bad for your gut and body so switch to butter

soy is also bad for you

also id reccomend to stop takeing what ever gut medicines your doctor subscribed for you and just take imodium for a limmited ammount of time for some relief you dont want to take it all the time just for awhile till your better i dont see the need for any other temporary gut medicines

but also know that while on the diet you must follow it 100%

before the diet i could not eat any broccoli or greasy meat with out geting horrible all day/night long gas and gut pains but now i can eat giant bowls of broccoli and greasy meat and have no gas or gut pains what so ever

but that is only because i eat very low carbs if i ate say a bite of a orange id get gas for awhile cause carbs interfear with your body from being able to use fat properly not counting fiber

i know you prob do the diet 100% i just said this last part to help you vs your family and freinds from saying annoying things like all that fat will give you gas and blah blah
