  • Carbs in wine

I have been looking at different sources to see how many carbs are in a glass of red wine (shiraz or merlot) and wine (chard, sparkling wine) and they all say different things.

Some carb counter books say 1 carb per ounce (making a 6 ounce glass, 6 carbs!) and some books say "trace".

6 carbs and trace carbs is quite a bit of a difference.

I don't have my Atkins book on me right now to look it up. How many carbs ARE there in a glass of wine?

It depends on the wine: Wine Carbohydrates amount of Carbohydrates in wine

Anyway, alcohol is not allowed during Induction. In Chapter 18, the book says:
Alcohol is not permitted in any form.

I know you are not allowed any alcohol in induction, what I wanted to know was how many carbs are in wine. (See my original post). I'm not in induction, I haven't even decided if I'm going to go on Atkins yet, I'm still reading and researching before making a decision. I basically wanted to know if I could have a glass of melot per day during this plan (after induction phase). So if anyone has a straight answer that would be good. Thanks for trying to help though.

You asked how many carbs are in wine, which is why I gave you the link to that website.

Since your profile says you're in Induction, I mentioned that alcohol is not allowed during the first phase of Atkins. This thread is also read by newbies who might not know as much about the Diet as you do, so excuse us for providing extra information. It wasn't meant to offend you.

If you check the link above, you will see that your initial question is answered on that web page, as thorough as such a general question can be answered. Some wines have 0.5 net carbs per 4 oz, others have 7.

Alcohol is allowed on Atkins and can be introduced in 5 net carb amounts during OWL Rung 5. If you are interested specifically in Merlot, it has about 0.8 carbs per ounce, depending on the brand. So if you decide to follow Atkins, you can have a glass of Merlot every other day once you get to OWL Rung 5.

I hope this answers your question.

I was not offended by the extra information you offered. The reason it says I'm "in induction" on my profile is because when you sign up on this forum, it asks you what stage of the program you are in. It gives only a limited choice, but doesn't include "just looking" or anything like that. The only option I had to choose was induction.

I have already seen the website you posted the link to as well as the website the other person posted in this thread, which is why I was confused in the first place. Each website has a different version of what they think the carbs in wine are.

One book I refered to said "trace" another said "6 for a 6 ounce glass", which brings me to my original question.

Thanks for answering regarding merlot. Seeing as how it's only .8 of a carb, I'm not sure why it can't be included during OWL rungs 1 through to the end. Why do we have to wait until OWL rung 5 I wonder?

I was not offended by your post at all, I just find that on forums, when you ask someone a question, many times you get alot of helpful information, however, the question you ask isn't actually answered. I appreciate the extra help though.

I'm glad to be home now and can look this up in my Atkins book. According to the book,
a 4 ounce glass of white wine is 0.9.
A 4 ounce glass of red is 2.

You have to make up your own mind...
The reason why we are not recommending aspartame is because the book says:
Originally posted by DANDR, page 230
Treat aspartame (NutraSweet or Equal) with caution. Avoid whenever possible. This includes products sweetened with this ingredient, such as diet sodas and diet Jell-O.
We are not recommending regular coffee on Induction because it is not among the list of beverages allowed during this phase of Atkins (page 127 in DANDR). It also comes with a warning:

Diet sodas sweetened with aspartame are not recommended on the Board for the reason stated above. If one decides to have diet sodas sweetened with sucralose, our advice is:
                    1. Count it towards your sweetener intake, 8 oz of drink as 1 serving of sweetener.
                    2. Don't count it towards your water intake.
                    3. In our experience on the Board, diet sodas stall folks. It is your choice whether you want to drink Splenda-sweetened drinks.

Wine, or any other form of alcohol for that matter, is not allowed before OWL Rung 5, which is why we tell people they shouldn't have it until they reach this rung. From Rung 5 on, it is perfectly okay to have alcohol and I didn't see anyone at ADBB recommending someone to skip OWL Rung 5.

So all we are doing at ADBB is go by the book, as it is stated in our Mission Statement: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...915-post2.html.

Interesting links Slapshot. I personally can't drink red wine anymore which is odd as I loved it pre-Atkins. I just find it too heavy now and it makes me go bright pink!! I do like a dry white wine but nearly always add sparkling water to it now to make it a spritzer.

PS I didn't answer the original question as the poster seems to have found the info they were after

Atkins and Wine Changes Over Years

Wine, Carbohydrates and the Atkins Diet
The links are really funny because in the very last book Dr. Atkins wrote/published when he was alive, Atkins for Life, he removed Alcohol from the OWL Carb Ladder. But the articles quote the atkins.com website and we all know that they've changed the diet to suit the corporation since Dr. Atkins died.

Also, whoever did the research for the first article, didn't read the 1972 book very carefully because there is a section that addresses alcohol. At that time, Dr. Atkins used some mathematically extrapolated formula to determine the number of carbs in an alcoholic beverage and it was an extraordinary amount (higher than 0.8 grams per 4 ounces!) So that nixed it for his low carb diet in 1972. And I'm sure oenophiles would be very disappointed with that remark that no one drank wine in the 1970s. Domestic American wines were in its infancy and not very good in some cases, but the European wines were popular at that time.

And the person who wrote the second linked article doesn't do much better. That author gives the reason for no alcohol during Induction as "Note that the initial 2-week ban on wine really has nothing to do with the carbs in wine. Wine is actually very low-carb. The ban is because drinking alcohol tends to make your blood-sugar levels jump around, which can make you feel hungry and crave sweets. " When in DANDR 2002, Dr. Atkins plainly writes that your body will metabolize alcohol before it metabolizes fat, protein or carbs. So drinking alcohol will temporarily stop the ketosis/lipolysis process and that's why it's not allowed during Induction phase.

Ooooohhhh....very interesting! Nice analysis here, Megs. You certainly have a deeper historical grasp of Atkins, so I'm glad you peeled away the onions in these articles.

So, on the DANDR2002 vs. Atkins for Life issue. Wine's allowed in one of the rungs in DANDR2002, but not in Atkins for Life. Interesting. Can you briefly tell us what Dr. Atkins' rationale was for removing it from OWL?

Thanks again for this info - this site is such an awesome resource.

I read all his books. When I read DANDR 2002, there were holes in some areas. Holes in the sense that the explanations were scanty or non-existant. Supposedly, when Dr. Atkins was alive, you could call or write the Atkins Center in NYC and ask questions. If his Diet nurses didn't know the answer, they would run down the hall and ask Dr. A, himself. Unfortunately, by the time I started the Diet, Dr. Atkins was dead. So I figured that if I read his other books, they would fill in the gaps and probably offer a better picture of what he (and his diet) were about.

And it helped. When you read his other books, Dr. Atkins isn't a big fan of processed foods because he consistently points out that when America began eating more processed and refined foods, diseases like Type 2 Diabetes, heart attacks, etc. increased. I think it was in one of the books, he wrote that a famous cardiologist, Paul Dudley White, observed that heart attacks increased after the Wars when butter rations lead to the widespread use of margarine.

So, on the DANDR2002 vs. Atkins for Life issue. Wine's allowed in one of the rungs in DANDR2002, but not in Atkins for Life. Interesting. Can you briefly tell us what Dr. Atkins' rationale was for removing it from OWL?

Addition/dependency/nutritional concerns----Dr. Atkins noticed that some folks were using their carbs for alcohol, rather than using them for nutritious things like veggies, fruits, nuts, legumes, starchy veggies, grains, etc. So Alcohol was removed from the OWL Ladder in AFL.

I'm curious to read the Frankenfood analysis in AFL. Sounds interesting. The wine explanation makes sense. I guess I can't get my 20 carbs from 9 Michelob Ultras! Oh well, I guess I'll stick to plan.
