  • Can someone experienced with atkins induction help a sister out?

I started the induction phase 17 days ago. I lost about 4 pounds the first week, then actually gained weight the second, so at the end of induction phase I was 1 pound heavier than when I started (WHAT??) Okay, I drink diet cherry dr. pepper, used the atkins shakes, used heavy whipping cream on sugar free jello, used sour cream, and hershey's sugar free chocolate syrup. All of these list either no carbs, or less than 1. Could any of those have tripped me up? Also, I am starting over today from scratch and I am cutting all of those listed out, so will I have success? I would also like to know if I can have mashed cauliflower on induction. I really want this to work, but I want to know what is sabotaging me. Thanks for any help. Also, I am new, and this is my first thread, so nice to meet everyone!!

Okay, well, first off - hi and welcome to the board!

Do you have Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution (2002 version)? If not, I'd really recommend you buy/borrow it and read it asap. It seems like you may not have yet, but it really helps clear details and the philosophy up. I'm sure others here will be able to tell you much more than I ever could, but here's what I see:

You seem to be using a lot of sugar-free foods, and I am pretty sure most of them contain aspartame or some other non-sucralose (Splenda) sweetener. This is a no-no for Atkins because it can seriously hinder (or even halt) weight loss. The Atkins shakes are also trouble because they rely heavily on sugar alcohols, which some people metabolize. Also, they are not suitable for Induction (or any phase, in my personal opinion). AND they contain ingredients that are not acceptable until the later stages of OWL. They're more of a cash cow for the Atkins company these days. I used them the first time I tried Atkins and I failed miserably.

You can certainly have cauliflower, mashed or otherwise, during Induction. Just make sure to limit it to 1 cup a day, with 2 cups off the main acceptable vegetable list in the same day. Or if you have 3 cups off the main vegetable list, you would not be able to have cauliflower that day. Basically, you need to eat 3 cups of veggies, and one of those cups can be cauliflower (or broccoli, or asparagus, etc.), but it doesn't have to be. Would you mind posting an example of what you eat in a day?

Well first I will list an example of my induction phase that started 17 days ago...
Breakfast 5 strips of bacon and 3 eggs (which I found I am slightly allergic to eggs, so no more of those) along with a diet coke

Snack I would have an atkins shake

Lunch I would have a grilled chicken salad with cheese and onions and jalapenos

Snack sugar free jello with heavy whipping cream

Supper I would have some sort of meat along with grilled bell peppers and grilled onions and cheese

        Then another atkins shake

and I drink about 6 diet cokes a day.

Heavy whipping cream (fluid, unsweetened) is okay on Atkins. Whipped cream is okay as long as it's sweetened with Splenda. Sour cream is also okay if you do not have more than 1 oz. The others are frankenfoods and have to go if you want to maximize your weight loss results.

Yes. All the frankenfoods you listed are known to stall weight loss for most people. Atkins is not only about counting carbohydrates. Read the Induction chapter in the book (Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution, 2002) to learn how to do Induction correctly.

Here are the Rules of Induction: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

Also, I am starting over today from scratch and I am cutting all of those listed out, so will I have success?
Atkins works if you do it correctly. This is why we advise people to follow the rules in the book.

I would also like to know if I can have mashed cauliflower on induction.
Cauliflower is allowed during Induction. You can have maximum 1 cup per day (measured raw). Here's the list of foods acceptable during the first phase of Atkins: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...induction.html

The shakes, SF jello (unless it's homemade with Splenda), and the diet coke (is it sweetened with aspartame or sucralose/Splenda?) stand out to me as issues, but if I were you, I'd also get a free www.fitday.com account and plug in my amounts there. The other foods seem "legal" enough, but the amounts can trip a person up. FitDay also calculates your daily carb, fiber, calorie, etc. counts and shows you percentage breakdowns, so it's really helpful.

Re: Can someone experienced with atkins induction help a sister out?

Wow you ate a lot of sweet stuff. There is a rule that we are allowed only three sweeteners a day (and soft drinks may have a more than two servings per container). When I did Atkins induction first time I was not good and tried a few things not on the list and learned my lesson. Second time I did it without sweeteners and sticking to the rules. It is just 14 days - and is fine one day at a time.

Couple of things to think about - sugar free - does not mean Atkins legal.
Some labels do not tell the whole truth - especially where sweeteners are concerned many of us process those carbs that they tell us not to count. And hence we are not getting into ketosis and riping the benefits of this diet (And this is true even if the products are make and marketed by the Atkins company!!!)

              Anyways welcome to ADBB
And good luck. You can do it.
Look at this lady. That is pretty spectacular, right?

Thanks everyone. I am cutting out all shakes and diet cokes as well as any aspartame.
