  • What do you think this could be??

I woke up this morning feeling great. I sat down on the couch and scrunched my legs up here with me. I freaked out when I saw my ankle. My right ankle is swollen and full of fluid. No pain at all but the swelling is unbelievable!! I told my friend THIS is not MY ankle. She asked whose ankle it was!

I called my mother, the nurse. She told me to google gout. My friend agreed with her BUT, isn't gout associated with pain or just during an attack?? I have been lectured this morning on high levels of uric acid in the bloodstream, eating too much protein, blah, blah, blah. I've elevated it but that's not helping. Any ideas?

Doesn't sound like gout to me.. that is usually in a joint and yes, usually painful.

Not a doctor, but my sister suffers from edema like that. She is very heavy. Sometimes her veins in her leg just can't keep up with pumping it back to her heart, and fluid builds up.

Have you been standing a long time or sitting a long time? Can you have hurt your ankle and not realized it? or gotten an insect bite?

Not to be alarmist, but I would get this checked out. If it isn't due to some outside factor, if you had a clot in your leg somewhere fluid could back up behind it, or it could be telling you something about kidney function, too many possibilities. It is the sort of thing I wouldn't ignore, if you know no outside causes like a lot of standing or something.

I have had gout, and its always just in my big toe and its very painful, like too painful to have a sock covering it.

Did you maybe turn your ankle and think nothing of it at the time? But you have no pain....maybe a bug bite?

I would go to the doctor because of the clot issue momtomany1 suggested. Blood clots are very serious!

I had a clot in my inferior vena cava after my daughter was born. It started in my renal vein. I went to the ER thinking I had a kidney infection. I had no clue I was walking around with a ticking time bomb inside of me.

I always tell people to go to the doctor with funny stuff like that because you never know how serious it could be!

Hopefully you just slept on it wrong and the circulation wasn't good enough to keep fluids going back and forth. Good luck!

My friend checked out my ankle thoroughly. It's easy to do because it's sooooo white. No marks, bites or anything of that nature. I haven't had a moment of near injury so I don't think that's it. Isn't it nice this kind of thing always happens on weekend?

Just to be safe, go to the ER if your doc doesn't see patients on Sundays. Let us know how you are!

Sometimes medications can cause edema - Edema usually hits both feet, not just one...

With just the one foot, being as swollen as it is... I would make an appt with the doc, especially if it is painful to walk on...

Oh goodness, you guys are going to love this resolution! My doc is in another town and the last time I took time off work to go, I got written up at work for not adhering to the company attendance policy. I cannot afford the emergency room either. Soooo, my best friend spent the night with me last night and has witnessed the ugly progression of my swollen granny kankle this morning. She works at a vets office. I peed in a reusable (BUT NOT ANYMORE!!) lidded bowl and she's going to take it to the clinic and do a urinalysis. It's the best I can do right now and so fitting, when my grandmother was in labor, she had to settle for a veterinarian delivering my father!! LOL! Runs in the family, I suppose.

Everlosing, I am VERY concerned about this. It doesn't sound like something to mess with.

Do you have any of those walk-in clinics in your area? You REALLY need to get that looked at.

Re: What do you think this could be??

Sunny_One, I'm inclined to agree with you. I just got back home. Took my friend home, then stopped by the dollar store for spices and went to the grocery across the street for a short time. The ankle is now hurting, so is my right leg. This poo is derailing my plans for the day!!! The shrimp is in a bowl of cool water and I have all the ingredients for the alfredo sauce you sent me the recipe for. I am so frustrated!! I want a good day! Cleaned all day yesterday and just wanted to enjoy myself today!!

You're right. Just pulled the pant leg of my jeans up and took my sock off. The swelling is spreading down into my foot and now up into my leg. It's puffy and soft and the registered nurse says soft is a little better news than hard, at least more comfortable. I'm going to be on the phone for a bit researching the urgent care places here and I think my doc's cell phone number is around here somewhere.....

Well, here is the diagnosis. I went to the Urgent Care Center to avoid the people coming into the emergency room clutching their hearts and ensuring I'd be there until midnight!! Anyway, the doctor said no more of this.... I have tendonitis in my foot/lower leg. I have to stay off of it, elevate it, use heat treatments and anti-inflammatories and pain meds. My copay was only $25 so that alone was worth the pain meds LOL! I'm not sure how I'm going to deal with the 6WEC. This sucks! Unfortunately, my workouts just got easier but that means some tweaking for foods, I imagine. I'm going to sit here for awhile and keep it elevated as I have been standing/walking and the nurse wrapped the ace bandage waaaaay too tight. I'll catch up with the posts and relax and THEN I'm going to the kitchen to cook my first spaghetti squash to use for "noodles" and throw that together with some creamy alfredo sauce and shrimp. I'm soooo hungry!

Everlosing, I am SO very glad you had it checked out! And very relieved!

I had to drop out of the last 6 weeks challenge when I had my dental work. If you can do chair exercises and upper body work, that would be good. But if not, there's no shame in dropping out until you feel up to doing it again.

                            Take care of yourself!
