  • Getting some odd reactions. Almost funny but a little awkward

When someone offers me something high-carby to eat, I turn them down by saying "Thanks for offering, but i'm on a diet." And then if were at a restaurant I'll go ahead and order the double cheeseburger or steak fried in butter. And of course, both of those are associated with heart disease, being overweight ...etc. So I almost feel obligated to explain to them the diet and why I'm ordering it. Somewhat annoying, but also somewhat funny to see their faces when I order.

    Anyone else experience this?

Hopefully my weight loss will be a suitable explanation in the future. "What? You don't think I should be ordering this? Did YOU lose 100+ pounds? Didn't think so!"

Well, the source of the initial confusion on their part might be that you're really not on a "diet," are you? Why not say, "I'm watching my carbs." Then, when you order carbless or low carb items, it makes sense to them.

Thanx for the tip! I now know to say "im watching my carbs" when I go to Burger King and order a double whopper so the cashier doesn't look at me weird when I ask for a fork & knife just 2 eat it! I was mortified when another customer stated "that aint mine, even she need a fork and knife just 2 eat that big ol' thang." to which I explained I need a fork and knife because I have to take the bun off and then I had 2 explain WHY I was taking the bun off...very annoying to say the least so I know where you're coming from lol

I think you can order the Whopper without the bun at BK.

I sat in the car at the supermarket car-park the other day, eating some cooked chicken from the packet (spent more time out than I'd planned, and needed something legal). The bloke in the car opposite me was munching on a packet of crisps and a baguette, followed by some chocolate. No-one even gave him a second glance, but with the weird looks and stares I got, you would've thought I was munching on a live frog, rather than some healthy cooked meat! Ah well - such is the Atkins life I suppose!

We always get funny reactions when we order burgers with no bun or ketchup.

I being someone who likes to throw people for a loop, don't mind it one bit.

Sometimes I'll say "Oh I can't I'm allergic to (Insert high carb food), it makes me swell up like a balloon."

But you know what, that isn't really far from the truth is it???

Re: Getting some odd reactions. Almost funny but a little awkward

I rarely eat out anymore... but I do get odd reactions from both my MIL and her good friend that we have over for dinner at least once a week.

She is convinced that she knows exactly what I can and can't eat... while he's convinced he knows exactly what I do and don't eat.

I refused a salad for dinner (already reached carb max for the day)... she couldn't get her head around it. "You can eat salad," she said emphatically.

A few days later, I'm in the process of building my green salad for the week and the friend was visiting. "What... are you on the salad portion of your diet now or something?" "I thought you were just eating a lot of meat."

Neither one of these people will stop long enough for me to actually exlplain how this WOE works... so I just smile.

Re: Getting some odd reactions. Almost funny but a little awkward

I was on a business trip all last week in Germany, so I kept having to ask to swap out the potatoes with something else (Luckily it's "Spargel" season there!). After being obliged to explain with the strange looks, I just explained, "I am not allowed to have starch!". They then nod knowingly and place the bread basket in front of me.

The "no starch allowed" excuse usually gets me out of having to mention "Atkins" or even "diet". I also have issues with the MIL opining on what I can and can't have, but at least she made a real effort at preparing salads, filets, etc, that I told her I could eat. The portions were too much, but you know what? After 11 days of vacation followed by 5 days of a business trip followed by 2 more days of vacation/full day travel, I lost 7 pounds. Less than normal, but I've never LOST weight on vacation before, so I'm thrilled.

I sometimes tell people that I have a wheat intolerance and I am trying to cut out sugar. No one ever questions me the way they do when I say I low carbing.

I've had some strange looks at work too. Someone offered me some M&M's and I just said "No thank you, I don't eat candy, I'm a diabetic and it's not good for me." The co-worker was very sweet, she said "You don't eat ANY sweets?" I said "nope". Her response.."Well I love chocolate" I told her she could have my part and she just laughed....lol

                              LOL that's cute!

I try to avoid talking about Atkins, mostly because some of my friends are heavier than me and there's probably nothing more irritating than your thin friend talking about how they want to lose weight.

When someone offers me food I don't want, I just say "That looks great, thanks, but I'm not hungry right now. Maybe I'll grab one later?"

I haven't been going to a lot of restaurants lately, but when I do I try to keep the substitutions and requests to a minimum. At the most I'll ask to sub out potatoes for more vegetables or something.

I figure the more I talk about it, the more I open myself up to comments and criticisms. It's just not really their business. There's nothing wrong with talking about it, I just like to keep it to myself.
