  • Is Atkins filling because....

Does the diet make us feel full because of the fat? I have never eaten this much fat in my life so I decided that I won't use all the yolks in my eggs when I do eat them. I used to only eat 1 yolk with 3 whites in my omelet. I am maintaining my weight but my waste is getting larger? WTF? I have always had an hourglass figure but now I look like a square, I had more shape before the diet. Could it be from the all the fat I am eating? I still weigh the same but man oh man, when I found out that I could use heavy whipping cream as a milk substitute, I use it in almost everything, coffee, quiche, hollandaise. I feel like the foods are too fat but it is keeping me full.

BabyMama - Dr. Atkins said don't count calories, not calories don't count.

You are allowed to eat whenever you are hungry, until you are not hungry anymore.

There are a few guidelines that will help you:
-Get at least 1/2 your daily carbs from vegetables
-Keep the ratio of the calories you eat at about 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. Using fitday.com will help you alot with this.

Appetite suppression is a natural side-effect of ketosis.

im pretty sure the only way you'd be able to really overdo your fats is if you tried to on purpose. I suspect eating full fats does help you stay full, but more than that, you're not starving yourself and you're eating healthy well-rounded meals with fats protein and veggies. That, comepared to someone who's obsessed with nothing but celery and carrots, would keep you more full than your average dieter. On top of -that-, when you're in ketosis your body is burning fat constantly for fuel, so some people tend to stop feeling hungry. its normal!

dont look a gift horse in the mouth and get worried that you're full. thats supposed to be a good thing!

As far as your shape goes, are you measuring? maybe your waist isnt getting bigger, your hips are getting smaller. use fitday to make sure your %s are right.

I'm curious as to what your eating. How long have you been on this so far? If it's one day, it's not unusual to be maintaining your weight. But if it's like a week or so, and you're still maintaining, you're probably getting too many carbs. Which would be my guess if you're using heavy whipping cream in everything. You may also be reading the labels wrong. Remember, the amount of carbs displayed on the label reflects each serving. Be sure you're looking to see how much a serving is. The carb count may be 0.5g, but the serving size is only 1tbsp. So if you're constantly dumping Heavy Whipping Cream in your coffe it'll add up FAST. This goes for everything you eat too. Think about this also, just because you can doesn't mean you should. If you're serious about wanting to lose the weight, and you're willing to take the chance on Atkins, give it a chance to work correctly. Be sure you're following the plan, and be a little more strict than what you're actually allowed to do. Especially when it comes to things that are obviously loaded with fats and calories. I make sausage links, and before eating them I put them between paper towels and squeeze out all the grease I can. I use minimal amounts of condiments, and most of the time eliminate them altogether. Sure they'd make it taste better, but you're going to be done eating in a minute anyway, and the taste won't matter then. That doesn't mean you have to chike your way through meals, you can eat good foods, just be strict and the payoff will be well worth it! Try you best to redirect your attention to something other than eating like a puzzle or hobby. Something time consuming. If you have time on your hands to do nothing, it gives you plenty of time to think of what you'd like to be eating, and increases your chance to cheat. Like in the picture below, I was thinking of those pizzas ALL DAMN DAY!! lol! That was before I started though so I now use the pic as a reminder. "eat like this, and you'll be as fat as the guy holding it!"

Atkins is a high fat diet, anywhere from 50-65% of our daily calories comes from fat.

The fat does keep your appetite satisfied between meals. It also is responsible for ketosis/lipolysis. the side effect of ketosis/lipolysis is appetite suppression, so you don't feel hungry.

I have never eaten this much fat in my life so I decided that I won't use all the yolks in my eggs when I do eat them. I used to only eat 1 yolk with 3 whites in my omelet.
Ever since the low fat people have dictated "healthy eating", most people don't eat fat foods, which is a shame because eating fat keeps you slim.

I'm not sure why you are avoiding egg yolks because Atkins is a high fat diet. Also, excessive dietary protein is converted to glucose which is stored as fat. So eating 3 egg whites might not be a good idea. In fact, your appetite might be satisfied with eating 2 whole eggs rather than 3 egg whites and 1 yolk.

I am maintaining my weight but my waste is getting larger?

Doubtful. Unless you are over-eating foods, you probably won't gain weight. I remember reading these low fat people did a study on cows where they fed coconut oil hoping the oil would make the cows fat. It did the opposite. The cows lost weight.

So post your menues in the Review My Menu section. You may be overeating.

As the others wrote, what are you eating? Cream is limited during Atkins. And you make hollandaise with cream???? That's usually made with eggs, lemon juice and butter only. I've never seen cream used in hollandaise recipes.

I am back to normal, I think all the cabbage I was eating may have been too much fiber so I blew up in the mid section. But I am back to normal again.

I started around April 15th this year, it's my first time on Atkins and as of today I lost 9 lbs. I use 2 teaspoons of heavy whipping cream in the coffee and the serving I believe is 1 or 2 tablespoons. I don't cook with it everyday, but I did make a keylime cheesecake without the crust the other day and so far I have only eaten about 5 teaspoons out of it. But I think the cabbage I was eating bloated me out, I think it's high in fiber and when I cut back it went down.

Good to know. When I was a little girl, according to my parents all I wanted to eat was the fat on meat, nothing else and I was extremely skinny my whole life, until the kids, then I had a ticket to eat.

Ever since the low fat people have dictated "healthy eating", most people don't eat fat foods, which is a shame because eating fat keeps you slim.
My husband keeps complaining about the fat but I pointed out that his fat free foods have more sugar. He's been eating my high fat cooking and I just don't tell him about the coconut oil I fry it in or the heavy cream in the sauces and quiche.

I have always eaten my omelets like this, I think it cooks better and I am eating 4 slices of bacon along side it! That breakfast holds me over, I almost forget to eat lunch.

Do you want to maintain or do you want to lose? That is have you reached you goal weight?
I still have 30 more pounds to loose, I have only lost 9 so far and I started mid April.

                  What's your exercise program like?
Eliptical an hour, no resistance just incline 4-5 days a week and weights till failure 3 days a week.

Doubtful. Unless you are over-eating foods, you probably won't gain weight. I remember reading these low fat people did a study on cows where they fed coconut oil hoping the oil would make the cows fat. It did the opposite. The cows lost weight.
I think because it has the MUFA type of fats.

So post your menues in the Review My Menu section. You may be overeating.
                  I was over eating cabbage.

I mentioned breakfast but the coffee and cream also. Luch I eat 6 oz of meat and a spinach salad with vinegar. Dinner is usually bok choy, cabbage and mushroom stir fry with chicken and sesame oil drizzled on top for taste. Snacks are less than 3 oz of cheese and sugar free jello. About once a week I will make a desert like keylime cheesecake and from that I only eat a teaspoon at a time and the quiche on occasion. I did make the hollandaise with egg yolk and heavy cream over a poached egg for breakfast before I got the bacon. The bacon is almost gone so I will do a different breakfast soon.

                    Re: Is Atkins filling because....

Bacon is a tricky food. Depending on how you cook it, it might not be as "high fat" as you think. The more you cook bacon the more fat is released from the bacon and into the cooking pan. So unless you scoop that rendered fat out and eat it, you're not eating as much fat as you think.
