  • Coconut Oil?

Has anyone else heard that coconut oil will not cause weight gain? I think I read somewhere that you don't even have to count the calories in the oil.

We don't necessarily count calories, but you do digest and count calories in coconut oil. Medium chain fatty acids such as coconut and palm oil do not have 9 calories like some fats, but rather 6 calories. If you eat way more of anything than your body can use for energy and repair, you will gain weight from eating it.

Your statement reminds me of the 70's diet misinformation that claimed that toasted bread did not contain any calories. My friend tried the "diet" and was shocked when she gained weight: "All I ate was toasted sandwiches all day!"
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

my calories are usually on the low side so i regularly have coconut oil after meals on days where my caloric intake or fats seem to be too low. for the record my jar of coconut oil says 120 cals. if you're doing atkins and taking coconut oil as a supplement or source of fat, yeah it wont make you gain. but if all you're doing is gnoshing on coconut oil all day and nothing else and having more than 1-3 tbsp a day, yeah its safe to say you'd probably gain weight. and have one **** of a stomach ache.

I just use it for cooking (and on skin). But I was considering using more since people say that upping your fats can help with weightloss.

This is a true statement for most people. You just can't eat a half-cup and not expect to metabolize the calories from it.

I use it for quick energy. It's great to eat a tablespoon of CO about 20 minutes before strenuous exercise. It is absorbed right away, so you get a boost to your energy sooner than most other fats.

It's great for cutting down hunger--if you eat some a few minutes before a meal, you will fill up quicker and stay full longer. I have to be careful not to eat too much or I don't want my next meal.

If you are eating a lot of coconut oil, you cut down a little on butter, mayo, etc., then you will be fine. It's extremely healthy way to get your fat in.

It does have a laxative effect, so about 3 tablespoons a day is about as much as a body can tolerate, and that much, not all at once. Most people have to start low and work their way up.
