  • Already on Keto have a quick about steak

Okay I am happy back on ketosis urinating every 34.5 minutes LOL anyways my main fat comes from steak, eggs, cheese and flax seed oil (if that counts lol.) I was thinking though could I stop eating steak, and just bump up my egg intake to compensate for fat? I know meat probably has a more protein as well but I will have an extra protein shake or 2.
I eat steak(8 oz's) for breakfast, and chicken during lunch and dinner .....I have chicken so I still eat meat. So is there really any reason that I should continue to eat steak if I make these substitutions?

    thanks for your time,

I just have a hunch ill lose weight faster this way, but I dont know hopefully you do

Shakes are not allowed on Induction.
If you prefer eggs I don't see why not for the short term, but you do get a better nutrient mix if you eat a variety. Different proteins contain different ratios of amino acids. How about using mayo, olive oil, avocado to boost fat? Or even coconut oil? All those eggs might get boring.

You don't mention it but I do hope you are eating your three cups of vegetables each day. That and water intake will speed up your losses more than the type of protein ingested.

Re: Already on Keto have a quick about steak

Why not fish, ie tuna or salmon, or a fish fillet, if you want to drop the red meat.

Probably better than subbing a protein shake. Also once you are finished induction, and reach owl rung 2 you can add protein foods such as cottage cheese to your diet in the dairy rung.

Just curious, but if you are 9% bodyfat, why are you trying to lose weight? You don't mention your height, but my husband lifts and is 220 lbs at 5'9" and struggles to keep his weight (muscle mass) up, not down. And i think he's more than 9% bodyfat

If you are doing this for 'cutting' and not weight loss maybe you should be starting at a higher rung? Just a thought...

Re: Already on Keto have a quick about steak

I don't know if that will help you lose weight faster. What I am wondering is whether you are eating enough fat for Induction. Approximately 65% of your total calories should come from fat and 30% from protein. Then again, your calories are probably quite high, so you can afford steak for breakfast without overeating protein.

If the shake contains only "legal" ingredients (no whey or soy protein, for example) and is sweetened with one of the "legal" sweeteners, then it is okay to have it on Induction. Otherwise it would not be allowed according to the Rules of Induction.

If the shakes are "legal", you will have to consume more fat with them to keep your fat intake close to 65%. From the nutritional info you gave, I see they are very high in protein and have almost no fat.

Re: Already on Keto have a quick about steak

I'm 6'1 just finished up playing college football and a modeling agency wanted me to drop some pounds i actually lost 25 in 5 weeks almost ALL fat, I took body fat measuresment before I started and recently but I tend not to eat fish because of mercury, and cost im so cheap I buy my meats from a butcher lol but im subbing more eggs for fats, and the protein shake for a little more protein

and I dont know about these rules and induction, if you eat 15 grams or carbs or less(mainly from veggies) a day like me your in ketosis, Trust me I am, I urinate every 20 minutes lol

The only reason you are supposed to eat fat is because your body needs an energy source and it will go for your muscle if you dont eat carbs or fats, protein is a poor energy source

The protein powder I take is unflavored tastes like chalk but is whey protein with lots of amino acids thats why I have it

Re: Already on Keto have a quick about steak

I think as chinadoll mentioned you will need to add oils to up your fats..I don't think just eggs will do it.

Egg salad perhaps with mayo, eggs fried in butter etc... since as you mentioned protein is a poor energy source, and since you are exercising it's important you keep your fats up.

It doesn't take much oil to keep the fat up....you may want to open an account at www.fitday.com or thedailyplate.com these are online free food diary tools that will let you know your %'s of protein/fats/carbs you are having for the day. They're very handy tools.

Reading the Atkins book is also a very important part of this woe. That way you will know the rules of induction, and OWL when adding back the additional food groups.

Yep, that's exactly why I was wondering about the fat part.

The Rules of Induction I was talking about are part of the Atkins Diet, which is what we follow at ADBB. We go by the 2002 edition of "Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution". Anyway. What I wanted to say is that according to these rules, net carbs should be limited to max. 20 g during Induction. So if you're eating 15 or less is also okay as long as most of them come from 3 cups of vegetables.

AA???? well, we are addicted to what made us fat in the first place and we are trying to kick the habit! LOL

play nice... be kind. insulting our personal choice of weight loss plan is not the way to go. the members that are here and willing to work the plan [Atkins] as described in the 2002 version of DANDR don't think it's 'retarded", we actually happen to like it.

you came to us asking a question and a few members gave what they thought were honest, helpful answers.

Sorry, I didn't really get the AA joke because we don't have AA where I live. So I'm not sure what's the thing with the tokens.

                            But anyway...

Dave Palumbo's diet is a high protein diet (50-60% protein). Atkins however is high fat (50-65% fat and only 30% protein). I'm sure they both work for losing weight as long as you follow them correctly, so it's everyone's choice which diet among these two (or others) they prefer in terms of weight loss, food choices, lifestyle and health benefits.

There is a reason why Dr. Atkins introduced the so-called "Carbohydrate Ladder" in the Atkins diet. The food groups are ordered according to their glycemic index and to their probability to be "trigger foods". Some of us who are sensitive to sugars, discover during OWL that we cannot eat certain foods or food combinations, as they are a cause for blood sugar stress or trigger other health problems. These "trigger foods" are usually foods in the higher OWL rungs, especially grains. Now, your tolerance to carbohydrates is probably quite high since you are a bodybuilder. But most of the folks on the Board are people who have (or had) a significant amount of weight to lose. They are not bodybuilders, so their dietary needs and reaction to certain foods might be very different from yours. Therefore, for those of us who have decided to follow Atkins in order to lose weight and improve our health, the rungs are not "retarded", but actually help us stay on track, discover what foods our bodies can tolerate and in what amounts, and therefore continue to lose weight.

Calories matter too. This is something Dr. Atkins also included in the 2002 edition of DANDR, because some folks read the part which says "eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein" as "you can stuff yourself with fat and protein, and you will still lose weight". Of course, this is not true. That's why he has several chapters in the book where he discusses that calories are important if one wants to lose weight, even on Atkins.

since you seem to be following the Dave Palumbo Diet and not the Dr. Atkins Diet, you may get more relevant and accurate answers to your questions on a Palumbo Diet board, than here. What we tell you here is based on the Atkins diet, so it might not apply the the Palumbo Diet and, in fact, be harmful to it.
