Ummm... I didn't mean to imply that vegetables are not necessary. I was referring to how the government rail-roaded the public into believing fat is bad for you.

    I eat LOTS of vegetables.

And Atkins (the real Atkins) is still my way of eating by choice.

Good for you, Rifleman. We call the book DANDR, by the way. (I think the last few posters missed this reply, so I bumping it to quiet thing down...)

Are you aware that it's harder to store fat when you are burning it (both from meals and body stores) for fuel than when your body is burning primarily carbs? So, if you stay in fat burning mode, arteries should love having old fat linings melt away from inside them!!

you haven't read the book but you have the South Beach book...what does that mean? Read Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution - this isn't the South Beach site. Yes your words were fighting words because too many ignorant people THINK they know what Atkins is when they have no clue.

Read the book, follow the plan to the letter and when your blood work comes back normal tell us how unhealthy we are. Sheesh!!!!!

              Re: Anyone concerned?

My cardiologist put me on this diet. He’s one of the most respected in the US. I sought out the best because I developed chronic hypertension. With diet, medication & exercise it just would not stabilize, always 160's over 90's and sometimes higher. I've been on almost every concoction of BP meds. I ended up on a pregnancy safe “grandfather” med due to my pregnancy. I had to take an extremely high dose 5 times a day to just keep it under control. After my child was born & breastfeeding for over a year he put me on Atkins. One month into Akins my BP stabilized. 115/70!!!!!!!!!! It has been great since then! He wants to see me in 3 months for complete blood work to check all other stats.

This is what my Dr. told me. He said most people are too lazy to read the book, (I'm not implying you are, this is what I was told.) they want a quick fix, so they get info here & there & end up hurting their bodies & blaming it on the Atkins diet due to being misinformed. He said they end up eating nothing but processed meats, A LOT OF CHEESE, no vegetables whatsoever, taking no vitamins & drinking little if any water. On top of all that they add sugar & high carbs here & there thinking it won't matter, which is extremely bad while on Atkins (a high fat nutritional diet), & they don't even consider exercising regularly.

I was one of the unfortunate people who could feel their BP going up. Horrible feeling! I can't tell you how wonderful life has been for me since starting Aktins. Please read the book!! I know sometimes people are very busy, but if you have time to use the bathroom, watch a 30 min. program, exercise or even talk on the phone for 15 min.....you can find time to read the book. I’ve found it’s just a matter of priority. I am a business owner with all that entails. I have to be there ever day, all day. I have a 16 mon. old child, my first, so I'm clueless. Also, it's 1950 in my house, so all the cooking, cleaning & ironing has to be squeezed in before & after I get home from the office & care for my son. I’m still reading the book but I take 15 to 30 min. here & there to get it done. Please make time to read the book! A light will switch on & you'll feel a little more enlightened when it comes to food & your overall health in general. FYI - I think outside the box also, but first get all the facts. Happy reading!

                  Re: Anyone concerned?

Wonder how many books Atkins would have sold if he said vegatables weren't needed for good nutrition? Americans in particular are too ingrained about "eating your veggies", to ever accept a woe that excluded them.Atkins was no dummy, and a very good businessman..You can lose weight easily on induction of less than 20gms a day.Not as easily when you begin to add back in carbs. That is when many of us cross that line (me included) and re-establish hunger, and gain it all back plus.He got his info from the same studies we can find during resarch. It bascially goes back to the Intuit diet and their health status.Hard to find and eat your vegetables in the artic.

Phil, the Inuit at the time of that study did eat vegatable matter - they ate the undigested material in their prey's stomachs. [this IS in the book]. Hard to get that from a steak.

                        No kidding
I also think that if you want to live like the inuit it will be very important to eat fish and meat raw. Their access to vitamins and essential nutrients that we normally get from vegetables and fruits came from them eating raw meats and organ meats.
I grew up in the Artic. Not quite in Inuit territory. But when I was a child we ate a lot of interesting stuff.

                            Momof, definitely you can relax.

My experience? On Atkins cholesterol down 30 points, and it wasn't high to begin with. No more heel pain that my doctor said was due to high fat levels in my bloodstream clogging the veins..(you would think with Atkins there would still be fat.. but I am BURNING the fat) no more pain due to a pinched nerve making my thigh burn/cold/numb at the same time, huge energy reserves, clearheaded alertness all day, never out of breath, muscles getting very taut and strong. Skin clear and downright glowing. I feel one hundred percent terrific!
