  • Where to find low-sugar/low-carb foods?

Hi all - I did Atkins many years ago and have just returned. Unfortunately now that Atkins has fallen off the popularity bandwagon, I'm finding it much more difficult to find all of the wonderful low-carb, low-sugar foods that were abundantly available several years ago. My grocery store just started carrying two Atkins bars, some shakes, and the peanut butter cups again, thank goodness, but I've noticed the disappearance of many low-sugar/low-carb foods.

Does anyone have recommendations for where to find such things? I hate to order from online because of the shipping charges.

    Thanks!!

Unfortunately the local stores don't carry what they used to. I thought I was doomed before I started.
BUT, there is a link here for Linda's low carb menus and recipes. Put it into the search here. There are tons and tons of recipes and ideas here too. Easy as pie. Do a bit of reading here and you'll be amazed at what you find.
    Good luck.

Re: Where to find low-sugar/low-carb foods?

Please don't be offended by my answer but here it is....I find those foods in the meat and produce department of my grocery store. Processed, prepackaged foods full of ingredients you cannot pronounce won't win you, healthy. It just won't happen.

I've been on Atkins before, years ago, when those products were available. I wasn't nearly as healthy consuming that stuff. It is mostly just stuff, filler to stuff your body with. I'm making a concerted effort this time to consume mostly whole foods and I'm much healthier for it. I don't even know where the Atkins products are located at my grocery store, I've heard they're there but I'm not traveling down that aisle. Their products are about $$, not the best interest in your health. When you don't consume products like that, you'll be amazed how much they turn you off after while.

If you're exercising daily, you'll notice much faster and better results not eating processed foods. The speed with which your body gains definition and drops fat seems to increase. Nothing is less confusing to the body than whole, natural foods. It's a gift our bodies are dying for.

Thanks for the info and link.

And yes, EverLosing, I'm far more interested in eating non-processed foods and am a huge fan of organics. However, I have two toddlers under the age of 3 and while they are this young and time-consuming, I need to have something around that I can grab on-the-go to feed myself. I don't make a habit of relying upon snack bars, but sometimes it's the best I can do in a pinch. I wasn't offended at all by your post because I completely understand where you are coming from.

          Thanks for the input!

LageNomAi, many of us here hold full-time, 9-5 office jobs, so we understand about needing "grab-and-go" foods. So prepare foods ahead of time and store them in the frig. For example, cut up veggies, portion them, and put them into sandwich bags; hard boil eggs and store them in the frig; make extra for supper and keep the leftovers for lunch or breakfast; make crustless quiche, divide into portions and store in the frig; etc.

These whole, natural foods are much better than the overly processed and artificial junk in those bars and shakes.

not sure if you'll come back to this thread or not - since thiw as started in may and it's now august...but once you get to the nuts rung (if you're not there yet) - you can always make your own bars that you'll KNOW has only the best / healthiest / whole ingredients...

here's a link to one I'm going to try making this weekend:
Healthy Indulgences: Crunchy Low Carb Snack Bars

using the chocolate is up to you. technically chocolate isn't "legal" - however to make the chocolate coating that goes on top of these bars - you'd be making it yourself from the healthiest dark chocolate they sell now.
i'm not telling you TO use the chocolate topping - that is up to your discretion - but again, you'd be putting into your bars only whole foods that you know aren't processed with junk.

Chocolate is "legal" for OWL Rung 3, as long as you choose a 100% cocoa chocolate. If you like dark chocolate, it's yummy.

For the newbies to OWL. One bar (1/6 of the recipe) uses something like 1.5-2 oz of nuts; nuts are added back in 1-oz amounts, not 5 net carbs like other OWL foods. Also, "new" foods are eaten not more than 3x a week; this recipe uses pecans, peanuts, almonds, coconut, flax (and chocolate, so cocoa nuts), so you need to be doing OWL for at least two and a half weeks (if you use chocolate) before trying the bars. And when you do try them, don't forget you still need to get most of your net carbs for that day from veggies --- this rule holds for OWL too, not only for Induction.

is it? i honestly didn't know that. :P
i've used it on varying occasions - and only the 85% dark.
seriously - thank you for telling me this!!!

as for the bars - I haven't made them myself - yet - but plan on it (hopefully saturday) - and to me - it's lesser of the evils (specially now that i know a little bit of dark chocolate IS legal...) but i'd rather know what's in the bars I make at home than the junk they put in those bars you buy!

I also figure - for me - make em - portion em - freeze em - and they're there in a pinch!

I agree with the previous posts about natural foods. They may be more time consuming to prepare but they are for sure "legal" foods and are more satifying anyway. There are some really good recipes out there too. I find that doing this diet has sort of renewed my interest in cooking. The bars and shakes are really not all that good anyway and you can never be sure how they effect you. They may stall or halt progress and some people say they lead to cravings.

Very true but what is more important is that all those chemicals can't be good for a body.

exactly - which is why my new hobby is looking for home made recipes - such as these bars. I can't WAIT to try them!!

course - i have TONS of low-carb / low-sugar dessert recipes (either off of linda's website, about.com, or healthy indulgences) that I would LOVE to make - but I just can't bring myself to make an entire batch of brownies or a cake or anything like that just for DH and myself...but you bet your butt i'll be busy come the holidays!!!
