  • Does your family eat a lot different

    than you do?

I remember when I was doing Atkins the first time around, I was making a different meal for them and myself...how silly! That didn't last long, fortunately....

We eat all the same foods, except I don't eat the rice or potato (I never ate the potato though!). If I make pasta, and I do that once a week, I have eggplant or spaghetti squash with the same sauce. And now, because I don't eat the pasta, 2 of my kids get leftover pasta for lunch the next day - shows me how much pasta I ate! Enough for 2 people.

When I make hamburgers or sloppy joes now, I make sure I make revolution rolls early in the day. Pizza is not even a challenge, I eat the toppings but not the crust. I do want to try making that cauliflower pizza but it seems like a lot of work, so I haven't yet

Are there any family faves that you've had to make a bit of a substitution for?

Re: Does your family eat a lot different

My thoughts on the subject: Why would we keep feeding the family that we love the stuff that causes obesity, diabetes, insulin resistance and poor health in the first place? They may not need to lose weight, but they don't need to eat sugary cereal, high sugar foods (Pop Tarts), high fructose corn syrup, white flour and junk food in general. They need to be eating an Atkins maintenance type diet, with enough calories to sustain weight, and not be getting hooked on the bad foods.

Sugar/carb addiction is very real. Would any of us start our kids smoking, drinking or taking drugs when we know that those substances are addictive? Not on your life!
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

My husband & I are both doing Atkins, but we had the in-laws over for breakfast yesterday - I made potato hash-browns for them and cauliflower ones for us. I put the quiches in crusts & we just didn't eat the crust. They also had toast - we just skipped it. Decaf coffee for us...fully loaded for them

So true! My kids and husband love junk food but I don't buy it very often, and my skinny husband complains about it more than the kids do. Two of my kids are athletes though, so they get it drilled into their heads by their coaches as well.

How were those cauliflower hash browns? So far I have like everything I have made with cauliflower, and I've hated cauliflower my whole life

I only ever ate raw cauliflower, and not very often before Atkins. It's now a staple, and I like it every way we can use it for "mock" dishes. I never liked rice because of the texture, but I love the riced cauliflower rice (cauli-rice). Now I can have curry dishes on "rice" and actually enjoy it.

Re: Does your family eat a lot different

Now that summer is (almost) here, we bbq every night and eat salad and grilled veg with it. My husband will have some bread or a baked potato with it.

My daughter is 3, so I do tend to cook differntly for her. She eats tofu (her fave food), whole wheat pasta and avocado for dinner 3 -4 nights per week. Her dinner is always completed with fruit and sugar free yogurt, sweets are a real treat - we still have lots of Easter chocolate left - normally I would have eaten it long ago! She gets multi grain bread for toast - if there is a healthier option - we go for it.

I agree about teaching them young, luckily my daughter doesn't seem to go crazy for sweets - although she does like carbs. Yesterday she ate a whole ham and cheese croissant - (which looked pretty good!) Very different from when I was a child and we ate PB & jam on white bread for lunch every day!

Re: Does your family eat a lot different

Looking back on the meals my family ate when I was growing up it was 1 meat, 1 veg and 1 starch. My mom still cooks that way whenever I come over. So I eat the 1 meat and the 1 veg and skip the starch.

BUT I work in a doctor's office and I know for a fact there are families where each member has his/her own individual food for meals. For example, one mother was complaining that she has to make 4 separate meals all the time for her family. husband and her eat the same thing but the children each have their own favorite foods she prepares every night (none of the children have food allergies that would require special foods or special food preparation.) And she was getting stressed out because she was getting tired of being a short-order cook. But if she didn't make mac and cheese, chicken fingers and ramen noodles for her children they wouldn't eat anything and they would hate her.

My husband and I are doing Atkins, no pressure there. But, when we go to see the family for all the BBQ's and get togethers, Weddings, Baby Showers, Birthday parties etc, it will be a challenge for us to stay strong... mostly though, they are all going to see that we (hopefully) aren't eating like we have for years, there will be comments and negativity I am sure. Hopefully by then though, we will have lost enough weight to know that this is for us & that will give us all the strength we need for the long haul, LIFE!

I always think its so cool when little kids love things like tofu and avocado. My youngest loves tofu and edamame and eating with chopsticks!

That is all too familiar now! My youngest son loves ramen noodles but I only allow every few weeks. I make my own chicken fingers and mac and cheese though....we don't buy a lot of processed foods. I could not imagine making all those separate meals! Some nights I don't cook and we have what I call *get-yer-own-i* and we all have something different but its usually left overs or soup and sandwiches that the kids will make.

I love cauliflower...not a huge fan of eggs - especially 'overcooked' eggs. The hashbrowns were a bit eggy for my taste. I will make them again, but I'll reduce or eliminate the egg

My husband's family always has something to say about the way I eat....I ignore it, dinner is always at my house, so I eat what I want. Its tough though, when you are at someone else's house! My MIL always seems to put bread crumbs on everything, even the veggies, I don't get it!

When I was living with my parents and brother, Mom was cooking the same thing for all of us. Usually it was some meat with vegetables and/or rice, potatoes, carrots (I never cared about carrots though), etc. Sometimes we had "pasta nights", "shorma nights" or "pizza nights" (all homemade), but this only happened once a week or so. Plus there were always cakes or sweets.

Now that I'm doing Atkins and I'm not living there anymore, my mom cooks "something special" when I visit (stuff she would normally make on holidays ). But she cooks this for the whole family, not only for me. Of course there are sweets and rice and what not, but there is always "legal", cooked food she makes for all of us.
