  • update on health, doc advises to eat normally while on meds

well i'm back from the doc today, turns out i -do- have a staph infection thats been causing all my woes lately, and a pretty bad one. i have to take antibiotics (trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole) twice a day for the next 10 days, and if it isn't cleared up by then or comes back, i have to go back and have the infection site cut out surgically.
my blood pressure was also 'weird' (as the doc said) at 116/75. i told him about the amount of exercise i'd been doing, as well as water and avoiding salt, so that seemed to explain the low numbers to his satisfaction.

although he didn't crucify me for doing atkins, he did suggest though that while i'm on my meds and trying to heal that i eat more like maintenance and try to add some fruit and a little whole grain at least. i guess he doesn't want me to do anything that might hinder the healing process, but i'm bummed to say the least. i know everyones advice on here is to do whatever your doctor says, and i guess 10 days isn't the end of the world... but i'm having a hard time talking myself into doing what he says.

My opinion is that - what he is basically saying is that while you are on Atkins you aren't going to 'heal' and that's just BS. I wouldn't change a thing... you are doing great, and the infection should be healed by the medicine just fine. (If not, THEN think about what to do next...)

If your blood pressure has gone down since doing Atkins, that's not wierd, it's normal! My pressure went from 130/75 to 105/60... hubby says I'm 'dead' lol

Do what's right in your heart...

          thanks julie
i dont see why what i eat would make any difference. maybe he isn't that knowledgable about what i'm actually eating, and is thinking of it as a restricted calorie thing or something. meh

Well Kibs, being one who never holds back what I really think....I think your doctor is full of . This WOE has brought you health. How the h*ll are whole grains and sugar from fruit going to heal you? He must have discovered something new and genius in his lab that we don't know about. I mean, c'mon, I don't see this suggestion as valid doc orders. He probably figures you won't do what he says and it'll be his fallback just in case your infection is resistant and the antibiotics don't kill it. The most I would do in your case is move to OWL Rung 1. It may just jumpstart things for you. There's only one way to find out. If I was still eating carbs at induction level, I wouldn't be losing any weight. It didn't start again until I added more veggie carbs every single day. It's certainly less of a risk than spiking sugar cravings. I wouldn't go there. That will make one problem turn into many more. I'll step off the soapbox now. I just hate to see you get derailed by some guys best guess at what might help. Keep taking your vitamins and supplements and your meds. I've never read a medical study that said fighting infection required whole grains and fruits. Hang in there. It very well may turn out just fine.

maybe thats what i get for going to an urgent care doc and not having insurance, eh? lol
its bad enough that after my course of antibiotics are done i'll more than likely have a yeast infection. i don't want to gain weight on top of that. i hate taking pills. i never even take advil unless i feel like i'm dying, and these are big ole horse pills. oh well. i'll take the darn things, but i'm taking his other advice with a grain of salt. something its worth noting, i've been avoiding

Atkineers eat more than the recommended '5 a day' even in the most restrictive phase of the plan. 3 cups is 6 servings! We get MORE nutrients than the average. Fat is needed for healing. Use some whey protein to get the fabulous healing nutrient glutathione. Protein is important for rebuilding cells.. take your supplements and you'll be fine.

Does suck you have an infection! Take more Vitamin C girl and get better!

                  So sorry Kibs.

I think the doc is full of it too. I have taken antibiotics for infections on Atkins and have never had a problem with healing due to my diet. Do what you think best, or maybe just add some honeydew or a low glycemic fruit of you choose to go with his recommendations.

When you are healing ANYTHING you need protein. I agree with another poster I think that doctor is full of IT. You might also want to try a zinc and vitamin c supplement while you are getting over this infection, both will help your "boo boo" heal too.
