  • 30 lbs. in 30 days???

    Hi everyone,

I'm new and I've always heard that on Atkins you lose a pound a day, 30 lbs per month etc. I only lost 6.5 lbs the first week, zero the second, and now I'm well into my 3rd week with a zero still. Does the weightloss start to pick up? I'm eating less than 10 carbs/day, exercising daily, and I have 60 lbs. to lose. How fast/slow should I expect to lose weight? I am a med student and under a ton of stress, which makes cortisol & slower weight loss, but I feel it should be much faster than this. Any suggestions & what should I expect?

    Thanks!!

A pound a day only refers to the first week of induction... after that it is up to your body how fast you lose... You are doing just fine right now loss wise... you are in the normal after induction stall period...

Why are you not having 20 carbs per day?

I know that once we make up our minds to go on a diet and lose weight that we want it to happen as fast as possible, but it's not a race... take your time and do it right...

        Hiya
You are eating way too little carbs. You need to eat 20grams or as close as you can get to 20.. otherwise this will prevent weight loss.

Keep going though, and make sure you measure.. The tape measure can show you results when the scale doesn't.
keep plodding and soon enough your scale will be showing you results

I don't know where you "heard" that you lose a pound a day or 30 pounds a month, but Dr. Atkins never said anything like that. It depends on how much you need to lose in the first place, age, gender, how much you exercise and so on. Losing a pound a day over the long haul is physically impossible. Atkins is an excellent weight loss plan, but it's not magic.

Since you have 60 pounds total to lose, it sounds like you were hoping to lose it all in two months time. It ain't happening. People that have over 100 pounds to lose MIGHT lose 30 pounds the first month, but the closer they get to goal weight, the slower it comes off. I had 150 pounds to lose and I lost 25 pounds the first month, but after that it slowed way down.

Just settle in and do Atkins by the book, and the weight will come off. Cutting down on your veggie carbs won't help and eating lower fat will hurt.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

As the others have said, the 30 lbs in 30 days thing is not true and no where did Dr. Atkins say or write this. The typical weight loss after the first two weeks of Induction is 5-10% of the weight one has to lose. Since you lost 6.5 lbs out of 60, you're doing fine.

If you did Induction correctly, then according to the chart on page 158 of DANDR you have a high to average degree of metabolic resistance. But again, this is only true if you followed the Rules of Induction to a tee.

That being said, you may want to post a few menus in the "Review My Menu" forum, and then we can see if there's anything that can improved there. Don't forget to include quantities for absolutely everything.

              Welcome to the board, Marianne!

You need to be getting 12 grams of carbs a day just from veggies! If you eat too little, your body will go into starvation mode and you won't lose much. You should eat until full but not stuffed. And if you are getting enough fat, you won't be hungry.

Atkins, done right, is the best diet there is!!!!

Losing 1 to 3 pounds per week is a more realistic expectation for the average person after the initial induction loss.
