  • Sizes?

I know I shouldn't care about sizes - but I do. I have a pair of size 10 jeans that I can get off without even unbuttoning, and a pair of size 10 jeans (same company - different style) that I can barely get the zip done up on.

It drives me crazy - anyone else?

Yeah, at any given time, I fit into a number of different sizes. It's annoying.

      Re: Sizes?

arrrgh totally drives me crazy, i can be a size 8 in one shop and a 12 in the other. The difference in the sizes is crazy. I'm now of the opinion that i dont really care about sizes anymore as long as the clothes look good. You can pick two size 10s off the rail and measure them up against each other and see the difference in inches.

Also i wonder how up to date the sizing is? I mean, womens body shapes have changed so drastically over the years i wonder when the measurements for the current sizing were taken....

          Re: Sizes?

In UK I think men's sizes are given in inch measurements rather than as a 'size number xx'

Makes much more sense to me

I have always felt it was mean for wedding dress sizes always to be smaller than the 'normal' size so brides to-be have the extra trauma of ordering dresses 2 sizes larger than their usual ones. You would have thought they would have tried to flatter the soon-to-be-wed by making the sizes generous so they could get a size smaller than their usual and feel happier about the size they wear

            RE: mens clothing sizes.

I have normally found that the cheaper quality something is, often the "smaller" it runs. Also the more variance allowed within the same size/model (e.g., same exact size/color/style/brand of jeans, but one pair of 38s did not fit but another pair of 38s of the same exact thing from the same stack DID fit). Not always true, but often. Then there are some higher quality "designer" type named lines that always seem to be cut more for an average to slim frame (usually these are the lines that seem to be geared towards the younger guys - makes sense I guess).

If I buy a $15 shirt and a $40 shirt, I can almost bet the $15 shirt will have to be a size larger than the $40 shirt.

That makes me wonder... is the $15 shirt the actual "size" I am? Does the more expensive clothing maker lure me in more easily with their more generous cuts, allowing me to buy a size smaller than I really am and thus making me happier with their clothing line?

I used to work with some women who struggled with their weight constantly - they had two or three lines of clothing they all just adored, and I think a lot of it had to do with the fact that these manufacturers consistently ran large for their stated size versus many other clothes. Much more fun to buy a new (though fairly expensive) top or dress in a 14 instead of a 16.

Working on smaller sizes, whether they run big or small versus the label... LOL!

              RE: mens clothing sizes

I also found, once I moved into the "big and tall" type sizes especially, that the cuts vary dramatically from one line of clothing to another. People are "big" in different ways, so I imagine this makes sense. Some guys are overweight but still have pretty normal sized arms and legs and mostly just need to accomodate a very large belly... others, like me, gain weight all over and need just a little extra room EVERYwhere - in the stomach but also in the shoulders and arms, thighs and calves. Some pants in my "big and tall" size may fit normally around the actual waist but then have a big breezy "pocket" of floppy material drooping off the lower gut area, yet still squeeze the heck out of my thighs/calves, because they are cut for the "big stomach" big guys. It may be my size, but in no way fits.

Makes shopping a pain, because you really have to try everything on if it isn't some brand you have learned over the years will fit you well almost always.

Just one more incentive to get out of the "big and tall" sizes, LOL!

                Re: Sizes?

I've been confused since losing weight. It seems like sizes are all over the place and I seldom will buy anything unless I can try it on or at least return it if I don't have the time or inclination to try it on. When I was extremely heavy, I really didn't care as long as it fit me. I've learned that I look better these days in clothing that fits well and I don't get too hung up on the number on the tag.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

The more clothes cost the smaller the size will be. It is a marketing trick to get people to part with their money.

                    Re: Sizes?

Does anyone watch the show "What not to wear"? I have learned a lot about sizes and styles for my body type. They are very big on finding clothes for your body type and not worrying about what the size is.

It is so psychological though! (At least for me). I became a fan of Old Navy last year when I was trying on jeans and could wear a smaller size than I usually wore. That was before I started Atkins and it made me feel so good! The same jeans in my "normal" size wouldn't have made me feel that way. Also, anytime I wore those particular jeans, I would get a ton of compliments. I wonder if people just picked up on my attitude and feeling good about myself and noticed that? Hmmm...
