Hey everyone... I'm new here. I was just wondering if anyone has experienced my dilemma. I did Atkins back in 2000 and lost 34 lbs. in ONE MONTH!!! I of course gained about 120 lbs after that (believe it or not) and I started Atkins back up again. I'm in HEAVY ketosis, and have lost 6 lbs. since April 28. It is now May 13, 16 days later (over 2 weeks) and thats it. I went down to 249.8 on my scale Saturday and its now Wednesday and I'm at 255.6!!!! WTH??? I don't understand it. I've been doing 45 min. of cardio since I've started a day, so nothing changed there. I'm eating less than 20 gm of carbs (not even net carbs) a day. This is when I feel like quitting because trying hard and failing is so frustrating. Does anyone know what is happening and why I'm gaining and not losing? Has anyone had a bad 2nd and 3rd week and then lost more? Should I just wait it out?

Re: Heavy Ketosis, but Gaining Weight??????
Well I can assure you that you did not gain 5 plus pounds since Saturday. I don't think the math is critical, but you would have to eat an incredible amount of calories to do that. I think you are just facing one of those weight fluctuations we all have. Different times of day, different times of month, whether or not you have had a BM recently, whether you have eaten much salt, if you slacked on your water... lots of things affect the old scale, which is why no one should get too dependent on it.
Ketosis means you are burning fat. Unless you eat a ridiculous amount of dietary fat, some of that fat you are burning for energy is coming off of you. It can't NOT happen. Trust the process, ease up on the scale dependency, keep exercising, and focus on other things this WOE brings you. Are you more clearheaded? in control of cravings? feeling lively and energetic? It is a mental game of WHAT DO YOU FOCUS ON. Don't look 'down' between your legs so much, lol!
And welcome!

Re: Heavy Ketosis, but Gaining Weight??????
A couple of things...
1. you cannot compare this time on Atkins to last time. Your body is older, more used to the higher weight, hormone levels may be different--there are a lot of things that can change the weight loss pattern this time.
2. Lots of folks have some start and stop periods just after induction. These mini stalls can take a couple of weeks to break and are called Post Induction Stall Syndrome. There are threads on just this topic on the board.
3. You should be eating less than 20 but close to 20 net carbs, with more than half of them coming from the 3 cups of veggies you are supposed to be eating every day.
You should also be drinking half your body weight in ounces in pure unflavored water. Only 3 portions of sweeteners a day. No Atkins bars or other frankenfoods. Your fat should be at least 65%, protein around 30% and carbs 5-7%. Cheese is limited to 3-4 ounces daily. These are the induction guidelines in a very compressed form. No caffeine. Are you following these guidelines?

Re: Heavy Ketosis, but Gaining Weight??????
Well, I would say I'm mostly following that. The water, however, is an issue since I hate drinking water and hardly ever do except when I'm exercising or at dinner, but only sometimes. If I feel thirsty, I drink either coffee or diet pop. If caffeine is a problem, then I will just have to live with that because anyone who loves coffee as much as I do will understand you can't live without it. However, I guess I could switch to decaf. That would be a small change, and although there is still caffeine in decaf, its much less. And I could switch to non-caffeine diet soda. I know I need more water, which is why I'm starting today by drinking a glass with every meal. I don't have that much cheese in a day, but I can almost guarantee that my sodium is off the charts. I don't eat as much veggies as I should be, but I try. Its probably a combo of all of that. Last time I was on atkins, I only ate eggs, bacon, cheese, and pork rines. I lost like crazy. But I can't do that again. The thought of it makes me sick. So my day usually goes like this:
Breakfast: 1 cup of coffee, scrambled eggs, and once in a while sausage.
Lunch: Chicken on either a salad, or with avocado
Dinner: Chicken, Ham, Hotdogs w/ onions and mustard, Shrimp, or Roast.
For a snack: Once in a while I have a spoonful of Peanut Butter, or a serving size of nuts, or pork rines w/ hot sauce, or veggies and dip, or cheese, or jerky.
There she blows....

Becareful as sausage normally has rusk or some type of carb in it..
Lunch: Chicken on either a salad, or with avocado
Dinner: Chicken, Ham, Hotdogs w/ onions and mustard, Shrimp, or Roast.
hotdogs and other deli or processed meats contain nitrates, sugars ect.. also becareful of too much onions and also,,,, I'm not sure mustard is allowed (I might be wrong there - anyone???)
For a snack: Once in a while I have a spoonful of Peanut Butter, or a serving size of nuts, or pork rines w/ hot sauce, or veggies and dip, or cheese, or jerky.
peanut butter and nuts are not allowed on induction and only when you reach that specific rung. Pork rinds - becareful as some of these again may be show low carb but have rusk and sugar..
which hot sauce??? have you read that label and the same with the dip
Lastly.. I think you need to up your veg a little ..
becareful of all the things with added salt or sodium as you will retain alot of water, hence large water gains. Drink loads of water as this is the best way to get rid of unwanted water too.
Also, is TOM due at any time as this will defiantely add to a couple or more pounds.
Keep going and good luck

Re: Heavy Ketosis, but Gaining Weight??????
Well, here is the thing. Unless you are following all the aspects properly, you are not going to get the results you want. I think for you the biggest issue is probably water retention. You are not drinking enough to flush the water out of your system and you are eating tones of sodium. You are way low in veggies and they help with the losses too. Follow the plan and you will get results.

Yup what Chinadoll says. Follow the rules. Check the book. Stick with it. It will happen.

Re: Heavy Ketosis, but Gaining Weight??????
Thanks guys for the information. I weighed myself this morning and I dropped from 255.6 to 251, but still not as low as I was before. I just started back on my B.C. too after having been off for 2 weeks, so that's probably part of it too. Didn't realize I couldn't have hot dogs... but what about Hebrew National as that is what I eat now. They only have 1 carb a piece. As far as peanut butter and nuts go, can anyone tell me why it matters what I'm eating as long as I'm counting the carbs and keeping below 20 gm a day??? I don't do "net" carbs either. It doesn't work for me. I tried that before and didn't lose a single lb. Instead, i gained. At least I'm losing this time.
Oh.. and I'll try to put some veggies with lunch and dinner. Thanks!

You can have hotdogs. Just watch the fillers and added sugars.Originally posted by shannonlemon View PostDidn't realize I couldn't have hot dogs... but what about Hebrew National as that is what I eat now. Induction is NOT about counting carbs and keeping them under 20. On induction you follow the rules of induction. If you want to do Atkins that is. Check out the rules again.
