What is the deal with cheese?

I LOVE cheese, so much I would marry cheese if it was legal... Anyway, I just seen in another post that Colby-jack isn't allowed on Induction... can someone please tell me why? Its cheese... I thought all cheeses were allowed?

I am trying to cut back on my cheese consumption, but I really look forward to cheese, especially since I am not really a meat eater (I am a carboholic and lived on CARBS with a tiny bit of meat) to begin with, the cheese makes it all more palatable. I seriously eat cheese 3-4 times a day, even before Atkins, now I eat it more though. The cheese chips are my life saver!!

This morning the thought of bacon and eggs (again) or left over chicken just made my stomach bubble with nausea, so I had 2 string cheese sticks instead.

Maybe this is why I am not in Ketosis on day 3?

    Re: Cheese

Hrm, here's what I found. From Atkins' book:

    OTHER FOODS ACCEPTABLE DURING INDUCTION
    Cheese
You can consume three to four ounces daily of the following full fat, firm, soft, and semi-soft aged cheeses
Then the wiki entry for that cheese:

Colby-Jack cheese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Colby-Jack is a semi hard cheese with a softness that relates to Mozzarella cheese.
So maybe because it's out of the categories he listed? Just guessing.
    What I do:
Elliptical gym machine 1 hr Tue-Sun
At 320, switch to cycling on my Trek 500
    2 filtered containers water/day
    Daily salads/veggies

    Goals:

Stop needing High Blood Pressure meds - DONE!
    Workout in a XXXL shirt
    - DONE!
    Workout in a XXL shirt
    Workout in a XL shirt
    270 on the scales

Hmmm... curious. I haven't seen the post about Co-Jack not being legal during Induction, so I can't comment on that specifically. I've always assumed that it was legal for Induction. While all cheeses are not fair game (no cottage cheese or ricotta cheese, for example), a good many of them are, and I'm surprised that Co-Jack wouldn't be legal.

Here are the guidelines for cheese:

          -----------------------------------------------

          Cheese
You can consume three to four ounces daily of the following full-fat, firm, soft and semi-soft aged cheeses*, including:

          cheddar
          cow, sheep and goat cheese
          cream cheese
          Gouda
          mozzarella
          Roquefort and other blue cheeses
          Swiss
*All cheeses have some carbohydrate content. The quantity you eat should be governed by that knowledge. The rule of thumb is to count 1 ounce of cheese as equivalent to 1 gram of carbohydrate. Note that cottage cheese, farmer's cheese and other fresh cheeses are not permitted during Induction. No "diet" cheese, cheese spreads or whey cheeses are permitted. Individuals with known yeast symptoms, dairy allergy or cheese intolerance must avoid cheese. Imitation cheese products are not allowed, except for soy or rice cheese but check the carbohydrate content.

          -------------------------------------------

So, if wikipedia defines Co-Jack as a semi-hard cheese with a softness that relates to Mozzarella cheese, that means it's the colby part that is questionable, because it is specifically stated in the rules that mozzarella is allowed. I find Colby is quite similar to cheddar, which is also specifically stated as allowed.

Hopefully, someone who knows for sure will weigh in on this. Now I'm curious.

Semi-hard is the same as semi-soft.

It is allowed on Induction. Maybe you can post here the link to that thread... that info certainly needs to be corrected.

Its cheese... I thought all cheeses were allowed?
Not all cheeses. Fresh cheeses like ricotta and cottage cheese are only allowed in OWL Rung 2.

I am trying to cut back on my cheese consumption, but I really look forward to cheese, especially since I am not really a meat eater (I am a carboholic and lived on CARBS with a tiny bit of meat) to begin with, the cheese makes it all more palatable. As John said, cheese is limited to 3-4 oz per day. Many people experience constipation or a stall in their weight loss if they overeat cheese. It is also a food that is difficult to control for some of us (sounds familiar? ), because it has a high casein concentration. This casein is broken down by some enzymes into casomorphins (opiates), which have a morphin-like effect... hence the addiction.

This morning the thought of bacon and eggs (again) or left over chicken just made my stomach bubble with nausea, so I had 2 string cheese sticks instead.
            I think you're in ketosis...

Don't forget to have some veggies for lunch and dinner.

                Thanks so much everyone!!!

I will try and watch the amount of cheese I am eating more closely... I am sure I eat way more then what is allowed.

                    Re: Cheese

CLG - just a tip - I cut all of my cheese into 1oz chunks when I get home from the grocery store...that way I can just grab a hunk & I know it's 1oz. 3-4 of those a day is my limit

                        Re: Cheese

I do that too, cut an 8 oz block into 2 oz pieces. IF i eat something that has cheese in it, such as a casserole, I do not eat cheese cubes that day. That is one thing I have problems with. Sometimes it is very hard to decipher how much cheese you are having if it is added into a dish.
