I plan to stay on it until I am under 300 pounds at least. I got some GREAT advice from Phil!

      Re: extended induction

From what I've read, there is no limit to how long you can remain on induction. Just leave yourself some wiggle room to complete the following rungs and learn what you are sensitive to weight wise.

i thought you could stay on it a lot longer if you have a lot of weight to lose i just wasnt sure.
also when you move onto the other stages does your weight loss slow down or stay about the same?

          Re: extended induction

Several years ago I was on induction for a year and a half. I never went over 20 carbs per day and I continued to lose until my body hit that point where 20 grams was going to let me maintain my new weight.

At that point as I introduced new foods and added carbs I began to gain weight. By keeping tabs on my daily carb counts, when I got to a weight that I was comfortable with, however many carbs I was eating a day was what I needed to stay around to maintain that newer higher weight.

This was all backwards of course... and this time I'm going to do it the right way, just for kicks

Dr. Atkins wrote that it is safe to stay on Induction for six months or more. However, just because it's safe it doesn't meant it's the best strategy, as he points out in Chapter 13.

It's not only about the amount of weight you have to lose. It also depends on your degree of metabolic resistance and on your boredom with foods. Again, read Chapter 13 if you want to understand how things should be done correctly. The information there is also summarized here: http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...-i-go-owl.html

also when you move onto the other stages does your weight loss slow down or stay about the same?
It depends. Some of us trade a larger variety of foods for a slower weight loss, others lose faster at the beginning of OWL. But no matter what you do, your weight loss will slow down anyway as you get closer to goal. Remember that Atkins is not a two-month (or whatever) diet, but a way of eating for life. You are just wasting time and effort if you lose weight fast without learning how to maintain it, so OWL and Pre-Maintenance have their purpose in the "diet". It is also easier to figure out which foods you have an intolerance to when you have 40 lbs to lose than when you have 10.

You too should read Chapter 13 and follow Dr. Atkins' advice to decide when it's time to move to OWL.

RE: the "slower" weight loss on OWL Phase.....

For the most part, it means that instead of losing 4 pounds weekly, you lose 3.5 pounds. The loss doesn't come to a grinding halt. It doesn't slow to a crawl. In fact, some people have experienced a more consistent rate of loss and, hence, a "faster" rate.
