  • I am still sick.

    Hello everyone,
I have been very good and every since I started Atkins diet, 9 days ago I have had a horrible cold and I was even sent to the doctor for emergency cause I was so sick. Its been terrible. I due to go back to work tomorrow but I still feel terrible. Do u think it has lasted so much because I have changed my ways of eating??? dunno really. I just keep on questioning why has it lasted so long??? Now I have a terrible cough and my ears are aching. I am abit worried, because I am a very active perosn and enjoy the gym and work and spending time with my child but with this cold its like I am always in pain.

Can someone let me know whats going on?

I don't know about what virus' are going around where you live but we have had some nasty flu going around - we've had it on and off since January. You feel pretty good for a couple weeks and it hits full force again.

Usually the "induction flu" only lasts a couple days so I don't really thing that has much to do with what you are feeling. You might want to post your menu and see if anything jumps out that may be causing you trouble. Review My Menu - Atkins Diet

I don't think you eating has anything to do with it. I have a good immune system and almost never get colds. This has not changed with this diet. Because all the veggies I am eating and all the supplements I take, and the exercise, I have a feeling I am a lot healthier now - than what I was before.
But 9 days is a long time. Did they think it was just a normal flue at the emergency? If it does not improve and you have fever I would make an appointment and go and see the doctor.
      Hope you're better soon.

I think that your body reacts when you change your way of eating. I usually catch a cold about 5 or 6 weeks into a diet, especially if I eat very resrictively. To avoid it I don't do things too extremely any more and follow all the instructions carefully. They are there to make you as healthy as possible.

If you exercise too much the same thing happens. The body just doesn't adjust well to extremes. I think this also varies by age, the younger you are the more easily you adapt and vice versa.

You mention a cold, I assume you have a lot of congestion? I have a suggestion, a Neti Pot.

          YouTube - neti pot

You will not believe how much this helps with congestion, and the accompanying discomfort from the drainage down your throat. It feels JUST FINE to do this, not uncomfortable at all. Every time I felt the least twinge of sore throat this past winter, I used this twice a day, and never once got sick. I work in the public, with money, around parents and kids coughing all day. To me a whole year not getting sick is a big deal.

I bought a blue plastic neti pot at CVS with the salt packets for $20. I am sure Walgreens, RiteAids etc. all have the same sort of thing. You will be so grateful to BREATHE again.

If you were on a low calorie diet I would say that it was probably effecting your cold, but since you aren't, I think you just got very unfortunate to get a cold at the same time as starting the diet...

Lots of water and as much sleep as you can get will get you better faster...

ya the Neti pot is GREAT i got the blue plastic one too

in my personal exp this is what i find

before i had the neti pot i would snort salt water and let it go up through my nose and down the back of my throat then cough it up when i had a bad cold this one time where my nose and throat was very sore by doing this it healed part of my nose path and most of my throat but i still could not reach all the parts of my nose and there for that part of my nose i could not reach was still sore and of course still had congestion

but with the neti pot it reaches mostly all of your nose paths easily if you do it right so it heals it very well and you will be congestion free and can breathe great

when you have a cold i find the best way to use the neti pot is this fill it full 100% to the line it says

then let it drain out your nose then when its at about 65% water left stop for a sec take it out and tilt your head back to let the water start going down the back of your throat then cough it out

when you got a cold that helps get the back of your throat as well so then theres no need to snort salt water it can all be done with just the neti pot

then put it back in your nose and let it drain till its 33% water then clear the back of your throat again

on the neti pot instructions it says after it has ran out of water to slightly snort it at the end too

when you dont have a cold i dont think clearing the back of your throat is always needed just do it normally and it will clear out your nose so you can breathe great with no congestion

one of the main things that mess my nose up is if i forget to change my bedsheets thats when my nose air paths get messed up during the summer you should change them every week atleast although depending on how much you sweat you may need to change them sooner

also allergies to dust and stuff causes nose problems and other things could aswell

neti pot helps clear them up and for that day you can breathe great but if you are exposed to the problem that caused your nose to be like that in the first place then with in a day or two you will need to use the neti pot again to have perfect breathing

also my taunsils warn me when im about to catch a cold for example my taunsils will get very sore 8-18 hours before anything els tips me off before i get any sore throat or anything so i use the neti pot right away and then i mostly get rid of the cold right on the spot

the last 4-5 colds i caught 1-2 of them were wiped out before they could do anything one only lasted two days 1 lasted 5 days and one lasted a month... but let me explain what happend with the month long one

i whent off the Atkins diet 10 or so days into it by eating a giant whole wheat sandwich which was really stupid i whent back on the Atkins diet right away though

and for the last 15 days or so of the cold it just stuck in the very top middle/back part of my mouth not my throat but above it and it wouldnt leave but also going outside in the freezeing cold air and breatheing all that very cold air all night as i worked most likely was a big reason why it took so long to heal from that area of my body
