  • Just amazed...

I just want to say to all the new people like myself....
I spent months,,,years even gaining,,,,losing a pound only to wake up 2 or 3 lbs heavier. I would wake up in the middle of the night and sleep eat because my blood sugar would drop,,,,

I havent felt this good, and clear headed in forever.

Stick with it.,.,,I've only been going since 5/15/2009 but, keep the end goal in mind and take it one day at a time.

My doc did say one thing,,,,the water is so important for not only hydration and to flush your system, but to also prevent kidney stones during the diet,,,,

Kidney stones are more likely to occur when people already have a form of kidney impairment, and it is thought that many people may have these problems without realizing it. In effect, this means that the Atkins diet does not usually cause kidney stones but rather aggravates a previous condition.

The clarity is one of my favorite things about Atkins. It is nice not living in a carb-fog!

He stressed the taxing the kidneys go through when the body is getting rid of the toxins and just told me about two patients who previously had no reanl impairments that ended up with stones.

So I guess it's a 50/50, the main thing is keeping the fluids up religiously to keep hydrated and keep the kidneys flushed.

            Re: Just amazed...

From what I have read it is more likely that being on a lowfat diet causes the formation of kidney stones and by switching to a highfat way of eating they are passed by the kidneys when they would have otherwise just lurked n the kidneys.

              Re: Just amazed...

My husband and I have been low carbing for 6 years and we have never had a problem with kidney stones. We drink tons of water during induction and extended induction, but as we enter maintenance mode, we slack off a bit on the water....never had a stone or any kidney pain at all. I guess it depends on the person...maybe the diet...but I think the water helps.

                Re: Just amazed...

Well, all he said was that when you add heavy protein and tax your kidneys by flushing out all the toxins (since tey and the liver are our bodies filtration system) you run the high potential to build kidney stones because of increased uric acid levels. He said that it can be balanced out by keeping yourself hydrated over the 8/8 rule and making good choices with balance in the diet. he said hes had many patients do Atkins and one or two ended up with stones which he attributed to losing to fast, making excessive choices wit the meat and not keeping well hydrated.

Anyway,,,he's supportive of me doing it and thats just what he told me as a cautionary thing.

I am glad that your doctor is on board with you doing Atkins

A lot of people do think that Atkins is high protein rather than what we know is high fat/medium protein/low carb.
