  • Atkins and high blood sugar

    Hello everybody,
I joined the board after I started the atkin's diet, been on atkins for about 8 weeks and lost about 15 pounds so far and feel really good.
I didn't do any blood tests before I start atkins but I'm a pilot and I do a full medical check every year and last november I was healthy and all my tests showed normal levels of blood sugar, cholestrol and uric acid.
I wanted to see atkins effect on my general health so I went for a blood test yesterday and I was shocked with the result. my blood sugar is HIGH (142 ml/dl) and cholestrol at 202 ml/dl. I have no family history of diabetes and my fitness level is fair and I havent eaten any simple sugar, rice, bread or pasta for the past 8 weeks !! even fruits are limited to 1 piece 3 times a week. The result does not make sense to me.
Is there any connection between atkins and high blood sugar ?
I'm really scared now because diabetes if confirmed would mean that I would lose my job as a result of losing my medical license.
    Any advice ?

Did you take a 'fasting' blood test? Or did you take the test after eating...

It determines whether you are in the normal range or not...

    normal ranges:

    On waking up - 80 to 120
    Before meals - 80 to 120
2 hours after meals - 160 or less
    At bedtime - 100 to 140
    F/46/5'2" - 249/198/115
    Start Date 03/06/09

    Mini goals:
    1st - 25 lbs down - Met 06/19/09
    2nd - Onederland - Met 03/10/10
    3rd - 75 lbs down
    4th - size 12
    5th - BMI 21

if i were you i would wait 6 months before geting blood tests then you can see the best effects i think

8 weeks may not be long enough

anyways if your worried about diabetes this link has alot of very useful info about it

OK, hopefully they will give you the glucose tolerance test too...

          Fasting Blood Glucose (FBG)

fasting glucose From 70 to 99 - Normal
          fasting glucose From 100 to 125 - Impaired (pre-diabetes)
fasting glucose From 126 and above - on more than one testing occasion Diabetes

          Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (OGTT)

          (2 hours after a 75-gram glucose drink)

Less than 140 - Normal glucose tolerance
          From 140 to 200 - Impaired glucose tolerance - (pre-diabetes)
Over 200 on more than one testing occasion - Diabetes

          ------------

Good luck on your test... !!!

How much do you weigh and how long have you weighed at this amount?
