  • Questions about exercise (long post sorry!)

I have a few questions in regards to Atkins and exercise. I understand the calories in calories out thing, and thats why people exercise to loose weight.... burn more than you eat= weight loss.

So, how does exercise help when your low carbing?

    exercise ≠ burning carbs

    or does it?

Does it really make the weight loss go faster, or do you do it just because its a healthy thing to do?

How, when you arent eating less calories, would it help in weight loss?

Could you potentially loose weight both ways? From low carbing and from burning more calories?

(im not saying to restrict calories and carbs, but if on atkins you happen to eat less could you loose weight because of both?)

Sorry if these questions seem dumb, im just trying to understand.

I started exercising the day I started Atkins -- it has helped me loose weight but more importantly I have lost more inches than I believe I would have without exercising.

As long as you are following Atkins exercise is mandatory - we eat good food - not junk so by eating healthy, exercising and drinking plenty of water it all helps the body get rid of the fat you are carrying around.

      yes...
every carb gram, every fat gram, every protein gram is capable of producing a specific amount of energy, measured as a number of calories. Low carbing gives your body a chance to burn fat as its primary fuel source, which it does so less efficiently than when running on carbs mainly. If its converting fat to ketones for your body's needs some are passed in urine. Thus there's an advantage in your weight loss. Less energy must be expended to eliminate the equivalent calories than it would take if you weren't low carbing. If you exercise, the rate you burn fuel increases.

You have to make the difference between dietary carbohydrates and the glycogen used to fuel your exercise. Your body doesn't care if the ATP molecules come from fat, protein or carbohydrates. Plus, glycerol synthesis happens even in the absence of dietary carbohydrates, in a process known as gluconeogenesis. So exercise doesn't really burn carbs as such (as in dietary carbohydrates), but can use energy derived from all macronutrients you consume.

Does it really make the weight loss go faster, or do you do it just because its a healthy thing to do?
Both, but by weight loss I mean size, not number on the scale. You will weigh more as a nicely-toned size 4 gal than as a "fluffy" size 4, but you'll be wearing the same size, you'll look better naked and be healthier. Remember that weight loss is only one of the principles behind Atkins, the others being good health, weight maintenance and disease prevention. This is why Dr. Atkins made exercise a mandatory part of the Atkins Diet.

It doesn't really matter how many calories you eat as long as the caloric deficit is the same. You see, when low carbing, you are actually burning a few hundred calories more than you would "normally" burn (Google Anssi Manninen's paper about this from 2004 if you want to read the science). So you can eat a few hundred calories more than you could on, let's say, the SAD (Standard American Diet) and end up with the same caloric deficit. Add this to the mandatory exercise and to the fact that you are eating less because of the nice appetite suppression effect of ketosis, and what you've got is weight loss.

Re: Questions about exercise (long post sorry!)

in my opinion theres 2 types of exercise that greatly help with fat weight loss but if you combind both of them with the Atkins diet then you will do great

Georgiana already explaind the first one

so il explain the 2nd one im not 100% on all this cause i just recently heard and learned about it but your muscles are the largest deposit of glucose in your body

when you do the Atkins diet your body makes more insulin receptors on your muscles so your muscles become insulin sensitive

when you work a muscle HARD it burns the glucose out of it then your body will fill that muscle up with carb glucose or protein converted glucose to restore its power

so theres the trick you work all the muscles on your body VERY HARD as heavy weight as you can go and it will burn all the glucose out of them

and since your muscles are insulin sensitive the little carbohydrate glucose you do eat will go straight to your muscles instead of a risk of causeing a fat weight loss stall

then when all the carbohydrate glucose has been sucked up by your muscles and or that one part of you brain then your body will use the protein you eat to make protein converted glucose to power your muscles and brain and protein converted glucose mostly never makes you gain fat

theres also more little good fat loss things this thing might add like maybe extra hormone balance that tells your body to lose more fat and gain muscle

i lost about 40 pounds of fat and gained 40 pounds of muscle since going to the gym and look and feel ALOT better

im still the exact same weight since going to the gym and i have been going to the gym almost everyday for 1hour 40mins - 2hours 40mins for the past 1 and a half years

Re: Questions about exercise (long post sorry!)

Eliminating starches & added sugar is what made it all happen for me.

I've exercised regularly since the fifth grade - twice as often & for over twice as long as I do today, I might add (i.e., 20 min. walking 3x/week, & I also incorporate strength training w/ light weights 2-3x/week). But I was never able to lose my excess weight until I got my diet in order - that was what made all the difference for me.

However, cardio continues to be excellent for my heart health, building muscle & bone density, and is a great stress reliever. I wouldn't be without it.
