What are the OWL rules regarding whey protein powder? I know that Atkins used to sell a powder product (was it soy based, I can't remember), but I haven't seen it in a long time. Soy in any form is a no-no in my diet but I do have some 2 carb per serving whey protein powder and wondered if I could use it at some point.

    Thanks for the info.

    Re: Protein Powder

Since whey is dairy we include it on rung 2.
    So you can use it
I don't know anything about the Atkins powder. The firm withdrew most product when they filed for bankruptcy in 2005. Would not surprise me if it was soy - a lot of their stuff was soy. So how come soy is out for you?

There are protein isolate powders which would be acceptable, however. Look for one of those to use during induction.

        Re: Protein Powder

I think you are talking about the Atkins Shake Mix... That had/have whey protein isolate and whey protein concentrate and some other diary stuff in it.

If you have a protein powder that only has whey protein isolate, it should theoretically be okay during all phases of Atkins as long as you are careful to have an adequate fat intake in your diet (I'd rather get my protein from "regular" food, but that's just me). However, most protein powders have also whey protein (not only whey protein isolate), so they are only allowed when you reach OWL Rung 2.

Also watch your reaction to the protein powder as most of them have MSG, although this is usually not listed on the label. If I remember correctly, msanjelpie experienced rapid heart rate/palpitations from a protein powder she was using. I don't know if it was just a particular brand that was causing her problems though...

I use the Jay Robb brand. Seems to have less ingredients then some. I did not realize some had MSG in them. As far as I know MSG doesn't bother me but I still don't like to ingest it.
Liv, I did not realize that Atkins filed for bankrupcy. Funny I never heard that before

Yes G, it was just a particular brand... (you have a good memory )

Now I'm using Optimum Nutrition 100% ANY Whey Protein brand. Purchased at GNC. It has nothing but whey in it... I put a scoop in my yogurt smoothie which makes it thicker... (and yummy!) It's perfect for a light afternoon snack... and fills me up for about 3-4 hours...

I have, and have used for years (until recently, when I started Atkins), Vitamin World's brand of whey protein. I've used it for cakes, shakes, cookies, etc., with no bad reaction.

My oncologist does not want me to have any soy products as I had estrogen related breast cancer in 2004 (5th year free!!! ) There was a time when soy products were a staple in my house, but after what my oncologist told me and upon doing my own research, I now place them in the same catagory as aspertame!

Soy, to me, equals estrogen. I take, an anti-artomatase for a cycle of two months and it works wonders. Increases testosterone because of a lack of estrogen in the body.

Ziggy, I'm on induction but I eat / drink whey protein now and then. I ballast it with a couple of tablespoons of olive oil and get the right macronutrient percentage. I'm sure most ADBB members do not bodybuild at high intensity levels. I'm talking about the old squat until you puke"" or reach negative failure after reaching positive. This morning for the flock of it, I leg pressed 235 lb for 100 reps. The first 35 I stoped for 2-3 seconds to catch my breath, and continued to do a couple more in that manner. I didn't perform partial reps. I let my calfs touch my butt each rep.

Ziggy, I had researched the horrors of soy for women, thanks for sharing that it's applicable to men too! Remember, guys, men can also get breast cancer. Stay away from soy!
