  • So, I weight MORE than what I look...

Does anyone else get this? The thing is, I have never really weighed the ideal "125" that everyone seems to strive for except for when I was on drugs, and that wasn't healthy. When I wasn't doing anything illegal and I was in a size 8 and felt good about myself, I weight 145. For my height, my BMI and weight said I was "overweight" but I was very healthy!! Even now, I told my mom what I weight and she said, "REALLY?! Wow, you don't look it." My dad agreed. He said the number I was saying I weighed, and my actual weight wasn't anywhere close to what he thought.

My mom is at 145, and she is in a size 14. When I was that weight, I was in an 8. Is this normal?? I have always weighed more than what I actually look. I guess this is a good thing, but I don't see that among that many other people, and I was wondering how weird it was...

This happens to me as well.

I think much of it has to do with how your built and how you carry your weight, I'm hourglass shaped so i tend to carry my weight distributed evenly all over and i think this is why....

I'm not taller than her, I'm shorter: 5'3.5" Plus, I'm adopted. I'm Guatemalan and she's white, so we don't look at all alike...

I hope I'm healthy for my weight, but I am not really sure since I've never had to "diet" before...

It all depends on how you're built. I'm 5-7, large boned and athletic (even fat!). At 170, I'm in a size 8. My daughter is 5-8, large boned and athletic (martial arts instructor) and she's 196 and a size 8. Granted, she's ALL muscle. Neither one of us will ever see 140 as a healthy weight...we'd look anorexic. I set my goal for right around there and it just tickles me each time I see it.

it may also be the difference in the way the clothes you wear are made (and where) as opposed to her clothing. Truthfully I wouldn't worry about it -- with additional toning whatever flabbies you may have will tighten up - you are lucky to be young with resiliant skin!! You're doing fine - don't worry so much!! : )

It's weird!! I don't know what it is about weight being such a weird number. This is me at 145 lbs:

              (I'm on the left)

Now, for my height: 5'3", that classifies me as "overweight." (As far as BMI and weight goes.) That doesn't make sense to me if I feel good.

My family is the same way! My sister is TINY and she weighs 140, which she looks about 125-130. My mom weighs 150 and looks about 135. I remember when I was 140 my old boss looked at my drivers license and couldn't believe that I weighed 140 cause he thought I weighed way less than that. I think it has a lot to do with height too, I'm 5'9" and my sister is 5'8".

Re: So, I weight MORE than what I look...

I'm the same way! Everyone is in shock when they find out how much I weigh. My brother is dead set on the idea that I weigh less than my mom, when in reality she's close to 30 pounds lighter than me. I carry all my weight in the lower half of my body and my upper body is a million times smaller in comparison whereas my mom carries all her weight in her upper body and has really small legs and whatnot. So maybe that might be why? I would always feel like I was too big because of what the scale said but I weighed close to 160 and I wore a size 9 with ease, so it never really made sense to me either!

I too weigh more than I look. I am 5'2 and even when I was my thinnest at 127 lbs and a size 4, I looked unhealthy. I am much better at 130 - 135 - which has a bmi of 24 - 25 - healthy yes, but on the high end.

So it looks like I'm not the only one with this issue...whew! And really, it's not that bad of an issue to have, but seeing my weight so high is sometimes daunting.

You're right, Carole. I shouldn't worry about what others think. None of us should! We do this diet for us, right?

Muscle weighs more than fat, but takes up less space. Remember that.

I'm 5'8" and have always been pretty muscular - even at my heaviest - no one ever thought I weighed what I did (normally got about 20 pounds lighter than what I did).

You're quite right - you look nothing like overweight to me!
In fact I'd say you look very healthy and slim (great news: you don't have to lose as much!!)
I think (hope) I have a similar situation, where, even though I have reasonably slim wrists and ankles, I am 5'8, have fairly broad shoulders and hips, and (though I'd love a nice long, slim neck and legs like a baby giraffe) a fairly wide neck and quite big calves, so I think I was always going to be at the higher end of my BMI set, and am never going to look like a ballet dancer!
I am currently around the 160 mark (JUST within a healthy BMI) and am a size UK12-14 (US 8-10).
Perhaps you have a lot of muscle-tone, as this will hike up your BMI without necessarily meaning you are overweight?

I think for my height, a healthy BMI is anywhere between 120-160lbs approx, and this will account for all willowy types up to the broader framed lady.

Clearly you are just very lucky - you're on a healthy WOE and look more petite that the scales dictate!
