  • For those struggling to exercise...

I hate to start. I hate getting up early, I have to force myself to put the clothes on, and I can think of a thousand excuses not to go, but when I do I feel so good about myself when I finish. I de-stress, I feel physically spent (temporarily) but most importantly, I feel like I really accomplished something towards my health and my weight loss.

I have exercised pretty steadily for the past five years. I have done weight lifting, pilates, walking, elliptical, swimming water aerobics, zumba, and hiking. (I get bored doing the same things all the time and so does my body) I love how my body looks when I am consistently working with weights. I love the tired feeling that comes from hiking or elliptical or even walking. I love the way I feel sleeker, stand taller, and connect to my core from pilates

BUT IT IS STILL HARD TO GET MYSELF STARTED ON SOME DAYS.

The thing is...there is no getting out of this. It is necessary and the longer you do it and the more it becomes a habit, the less you mind it and yes, even look forward to it.

When I started I was a very self conscious blob. I only weighed 20 pounds more than I do now but it looked more like 45 pounds more. I started slow and small. I built up and sped up and worked hard at it. Now, my weight isn't that different, but my body looks like a different person. I even walk differently. I used to try to slide unseen into the gym. Now I walk in with confidence because I know I beling there and it shows. I was talking with friends not long ago and we were discussing people's walks and was shocked to hear that they think I walk and move like an athlete now--it was a LOL moment for me because never would have heard that 5 years ago.

On top of it all, my blood pressure is 100 over 65. My cholesterol is 149. HDL is high and LDL is low (in the optimum range) and my triglycerides are 40! This after 5 years of low carbing. I really feel the biggest factor in the cholesterol numbers is the exercise.

OK I will come down off my soap box, but if this inspires on person to start walking around the block or give them the confidence to walk through those gym doors, well, that's what this was about.

    Great post. Couldn't agree more.

I have no idea how you guys exercise early in the morning. No way I could do that. I slip into the gym around 8pm, get an hour in, grab a snack from the nearby Subway and head home.
      What I do:
Elliptical gym machine 1 hr Tue-Sun
At 320, switch to cycling on my Trek 500
      2 filtered containers water/day
      Daily salads/veggies

      Goals:

Stop needing High Blood Pressure meds - DONE!
      Workout in a XXXL shirt
      - DONE!
      Workout in a XXL shirt
      Workout in a XL shirt
      270 on the scales

It's a matter of habit and necessity for me. I'm up at 5, done working out by 6:30, at my desk at 7:30. Then, I'm here until 7 or so each night. When I get home, it's family time then bed...

Jill, you're are amazing. Just what I needed to read today! I think of a million reasons not to work out and sometimes those reasons win

I have no reason either - I live in a new condo with an amazing state-of-the-art gym. I WILL go today - because of your post.

I have exercised on and off for years - but this time I think it is for life.

I am doing the 6 week challenge and have lost 20.5 inches and 10 lbs - but I think the inches are way more impressive.

I also work out in the mornings, I try to finish by 8.

restarted May 1 - for the very last time!

Re: For those struggling to exercise...

Skinny Girl, Moms and all others you made my day. All this has been said before but every once in awhile we need a thread to just put it out there again to remind us all.

For me it has also become a necessity. At 48, if you don't exercise you don't lose---its as simple as that.

John, I would love to go later in the day but I have too much to do and too little time. If I get to the gym early, I feel like I have gotten ahead of the game and feel better physically and emotionally all day. There is a sense of confidence and well being that sticks with you when you have worked hard so that carries thru for the rest of the day. even if other things go wrong i still feel good about myself because I did my workout. And I almost always do my planned workout. Some days I get there and feel tired part way thru but I usually tell myself NO, YOU SAID 40 MINUTES SO DO 40 MINUTES--EVEN IF IT'S SLOWER THAN MOLASSES TODAY. Completing my workout those days is a drag but it means more after I finish.

Re: For those struggling to exercise...

This morning I measured for the first time in a month. For bkgd, I live most of the year in China and arrived home for the summer mid-May. Sooo, my scales measure differently and when I first come home I always go a little haywire eating legal foods (mostly) and way larger quantities for a week or so.

As a result I haven't weighed in since May 14.

so today I got on the scale and am up 5 pounds (part of it is the scale but I am not sure how much) but when I measured, I am down six inches. I credit the weight lifting that I had started again about 6 weeks ago. I may have gained a pound or so of muscle too, since I lift heavy weights.

My point is, I would rather have the 6 inches off than the 6 pounds any day. I am not sweating the scale since the body is looking and feeling better.

                        Great post, Jill !!!

Once upon a time there was this sad girl who weighed nearly 500 pounds and could barely walk more than 30 feet. Her world was becoming smaller and smaller as she became unhealthier. Then, one day, she found Atkins.

In the beginning, she was afraid that if she waved her arms she would have a heart attack. But she did. She did TaeBo to the tapes and DVDs as she sat in a chair. She danced with Richard Simmons tapes, from a chair. And soon she stood. And she walked. Then one day, feeling gutsy, she went to a local pool and was met with whispers, stares, but more support than she could imagine getting from strangers.

Now she swims, lifts weights, walks.

And yes ... thank you Dr. Atkins.

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

Re: For those struggling to exercise...

Nothing motivates exercise like exercise. I've never been athletic. My brother got almost all of those genes.

I used to hate doing physical activities like hiking.

When I first starting hitting the gym, I hated it. I felt horrible when I was done. The task was almost too challenging.

Now, I love working out. When I'm finished with cardio, I feel pretty good. I've grown to love the sore feeling that comes after a good strength training session. I've gotten far stronger than I was. My only regret is I wish I would've started with free weights and skipped the machines.

Now, I love doing physical activities. The can finish a 2.5mi hike and feel like I never even hiked when I'm finished.

But, I never would've gotten to that point if I hadn't sucked up the first 6 months or so.

I agree BDawg --when I first started exercising I went five days a week for six months BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID THAT IF I MISSED A DAY I WOULD BAIL (and there was reason to believe that based on my track record). Then it became a habit. Now I may have short lapses but that fear of not getting started is gone because I feel better when I workout and actually miss exercise. I get all twitchy after a couple days without some kind of workout. LOL Reaching that point in my exercise routine is the biggest gift. It was a HUGE mental shift!
