  • New to Exercise--surprising pains

    Hi
I'm new to the diet (May 25th) and new to walking for exercise. Today I walked a half mile, which was HARD. The thing that surprised me was that my shoulders of all things were killing me. It felt like I was carrying a heavy backpack or had a kid on my shoulders by the time I was almost home, but there was nothing to take off to relieve the pain. Has anyone felt this before?

I expected foot soreness, tired legs, cramps...which I felt none of, but was not ready for the aching shoulders. Should I be worried? Dr gave me the okay to exercise so I should be fine. Just wondering if anyone has ideas and/or solution. Incidentally, the walk was mostly downhill for the first .25 mile and then uphill the last half. Thanks for any input.

Possible: Umm, if you are..."top heavy" (in front) this can put a strain on your back/shoulders.
Swinging your arms while you walk?
...Can't really think of anything else.

If it is muscle pain from the exercise, you should be a little stiff tonight/tomorrow, but the soreness should ease up gradually over a couple/few days. This is normal, but you might have "overdone" it. Take a couple days off & do it again-maybe do 1/3 of a mile and work your way up gradually from there - nothing should be "killing" you after a workout.
PS - I'm not a doctor or a trainer or anything - this is just my personal opinion.

I got very sore the first few weeks of walking. My lower back ached quite a bit.

you could have been tensing up when you walked since you aren't use to walking. When I first started exercising every muscle in my body hurt -- take a couple motrin and a hot shower and you'll feel better tomorrow! Try to relax and have a good time when you are out walking -- after a few days you will start to enjoy your time out - I know I do!

I sometimes tense up in my shoulders and upper back when I walk. I try to stay conscious of it and do some arm swings and upper body stretches every so often as I go.

              Hi
I just finished my .5 mile walk today and you guys were right--I was tensing up yesterday! I must have held my arms super straight. Wasn't there a Seinfeld about Raquel Welch not swinging her arms when she walks? I must have been a sight! Anyway, today made a conscious effort to relax, did the arm swing while I walked and I'm going to add to my walk tomorrow because it was much easier today. Thanks for the help!

It sounds like you are doing great - we all have to start somewhere I could barely make it to the corner and back when I first started and now I'm walking several miles at a time and riding a stationary bike plus I've recently added exercise video's .... you can do this..just remember to relax and look around - make it a fun time out, not a chore! I actually take 2 walks a day -- one with my 80 year old mother and the dog....then I go to actually get the exercise...LOL!!! Keep up the great work!
