Re: Flax meal?
I will try grounding it in the food chopper, although I have no idea what its suppose to even look like? Do you find that you use it much? Is it worth trying to find it in another store out of town? And while we are on the subject, which do you prefer, almond flour or flax meal-what's the difference anyway

Re: Flax meal?
you can usually find flax meal in most grocery stores in the baking aisle along with other specialty flours. if your local grocery stores doesn't carry it, try a health food store. flax meal is very fine, where almond flour is a little more coarse. personally, i don't use flax meal very often, only when i make a meatloaf as a binding agent along with an egg. only use a couple of tablespoons though.

Re: Flax meal?
Can ground flax seed be used the same way as flour? My knowledge of flax seed is limited, but I thought that it was supposed to be used in relatively small amounts given that it's primary purpose is to serve as fiber. Wouldn't using it in large amounts lead to, ahem, lots of time in the bathroom?

Re: Flax meal?
flax is mentioned by dr atkins as something to be used in the relief of constipation. however some use it in small qtys in recipes as a binding agent or even to make flax crackers. i wouldn't think it should be used as a subsititute for flour. i'm sure you could use it in recipes, combinded with other acceptable flours, once you reach the appropriate rung in owl. (IE soy flour, almond flour, etc) i personally wouldn't use it in large qtys as LageNomAi says, it might cause bathroom issues.

Re: Flax meal?
almond meal isn't allowed until the nut rung (Rung 3) -- flax can be used starting with induction. I get my flax meal at Walmart but I've also seen it along the spice aisle in the chain stores here.
I bought a pound of Bob's Red Mill Almond Flour 3 weeks ago at Walmart for $6.57. A little goes a long way - I have made a couple things with it and still have about half left. Contrary to popular belief almond flour isn't sweet - it really has no flavor.
Try your food processor to grind your flax seed. It should look a little like a powder. I make a cookie out of them - didn't like them as a binder in meatloaf -- I waited to have meatloaf until I was on the nut rung and used the almond flour - worked fine.Carole_____________________May Water 130oz daily

Re: Flax meal?
One other thought: if you are willing to accept a slightly different texture, you can save money on almond flour by purchasing almonds and grinding them yourself. I've done this many times and while the texture won't be as good as with pre-ground almond flour, depending upon the recipe, this doesn't make a difference.
The flip side is that in some recipes, it makes a huge difference. Unfortunately it's a trial and error situation.
