  • Do you lose weight in different areas on low carb vs. low calorie diets?

On Atkins, I seem to start losing from the top down -- meaning, my face gets thinner first. Followed by chest. Followed by (FINALLY) hips. Low calorie, I seem to lose sort of all-over just very slowly.
So does the type of diet you're on determine where the weight comes off?

No. You lose weight and fat depending on your genetics.

The only difference is with Atkins, people think you lose less lean body mass (i.e. muscle) than you would on a traditional lower fat diet. That might account on the different appearances.

I seem to be losing pretty evenly all over. Makes sense to me since I wear my fat pretty evenly all over

I have done them both and lost similar amounts of wt on both. With low calories/low fat I became a smaller me.Skinny arms and legs, little pot belly. With low carb, arms and legs lean, belly flat.

I have found that I always lose the least in the place I want to lose it most. LOL

I think for me.. and maybe it is my imagination... on Atkins ... the fat on my thighs.. are being eaten up.. my body sucks it and burns it for fuel from my legs... where as.. on a low calarie.. no fat diet.. I lose.. but my legs.. not as much... when I would run 7 miles a day, 5 days a week... eating a regular carb diet... I never lost weight... and was just flabby... but... now... at 121lbs.. my legs are very slim.. and less cottage cheese on the thighs... Lia

I don't think I've ever "stuck" with a low calorie diet long enough to find out the same way I do with Atkins, but when I lose weight, it always comes off my hips and waist/stomach first. I can always tell I've lost weight by putting my hands on my hips. Kind of weird, but true!

Correct Research from 100's shows it is about 90% fat and 10% muscle. Where the lazy diet or the low fat diet burns about 60% fat and 40% muscle

I was just about to say the same thing. Excellent post. Or you lose it where you can not see it. That is even worse I think. I lose my Back Belly first

I think everyone will visibly lose weight in their faces before you notice it anywhere else. Atleast that's how it is with me and just about everyone else I know. And I think based on your body type and just how you're built is where you'll lose weight next. I know for sure that I lose weight in my midsection first before anywhere else and you can tell in my face too. My legs on the other hand are the most difficult! But they start to slim down a little eventually, hah.

Hold the thought, I think I've found some research articles that do state that you lose weight differently on a low carb diet. I just yanked out the references and when I have a chance, I'll peruse them. From what I glanced through, it has to do with hormonal environments, etc. particularly the growth hormone....stay tuned....

I have always lost in my face, boobs and face --- this time I've lost the lost in my stomach and upper legs.....I've lost over 40 inches so far....but my face is still pretty fat .... I am starting to loose more in my boob and butt area so I'm hoping my face will start showing up smaller next!!
