  • carcinogens are yummy

Hey everyone! I'm new here. My name is Rachel and I am a 24 year old from North Carolina on my 4th induction day! (To see my full story, go read my post on the introduction forum. )

I just have a quick question. Tonight my boyfriend was going to make hotdogs for him and his son. I love hot dogs. I have no problem eating the hot dog sans bun, thats not the issue. The problem is that I know Dr Atkins said dont eat processed meats with sodium nitrite. These hot dogs do have sodium nitrite. I know he is just saying this to look out for us so were not eating carcinogens and it doesnt have so much to do w/the carcinogens actual affect on our weightloss. Do you eat hot dogs or other processed meats w/sodium nitrite?

(PS ive already eaten bacon w sodium nitrite in the last 4 days, so whats the point, right?)

Personally, I don't when I'm on Atkins. Not so much because I feel it'll hinder my weight loss, but more because when I'm on Atkins, I'm clensing my body, and taking the opportunity to eat better foods overall. It amazes me endlessly just how much junk I ate before I found Atkins!

Although, saying that I dont, I'm probably lying. I can remember times when I've been travelling, or staying with family and had little choice, and found hotdogs or something similar and processed with sodium nitrate the only alternative to carb-land, but I wouldn't eat it out of choice.

I eat hotdogs occasionally on this WOE. I stick to Nathans, Sabretts and Hebrew National when I do dogs. I also do brats occaisonally. I make a really good sauce using hot mustard, sugar free honey, and tabasco sauce in equal parts. I wouldn't recommend eating this every day, but every so often it doesn't hurt me. Everyone is different though. Pepperoni is also processed, and I eat that as a "take along" food. I also don't eat that every day. Good luck and feel free to live a little. If you stall because of this, it's only temporary and don't do it again.

Thanks for the reply, Stephbob! I do believe in trying to eat better and I have noticed that the less processed/refined foods I'm eating, the better I feel. And congrats on your current success!

Thanks for your reponse, tfek70. I didn't think about the fact that pepperonni has it in there, too. I was planning to implement pepperonni to make a faux pizza every once in a while. And by the way, your sauce recipe sounds *awesome* <drool> I didn't even know they made sugar-free honey! Where do you find that at?? Whole foods??

Sugar Free honey is at my Walmart. It's made with sugar alcohol, so you do need to be a bit cautious until you know how you react to them. So is sugar free syrup.

I just have to say this: the title of this thread creeps me out a bit.
Also hot dogs very often are filled with wheat, soy and dairy products. So watch out for those.

Good point, that's why I only eat the finest carcinogens. Boars Head also makes a good dog. Expect to pay a little more for the good dogs. The cheap ones use every bit of the pig but the squeal.

                  Re: carcinogens are yummy

                  LOL! Finest carcinogens. cute.

By the way, I did eat hot dogs (x2! oops!) and they weren't as yummy as I thought they would be. And we grilled them on the grill and I could see the skin casing bubbling and crisping and it grossed me out. Needless to say, next time I don't think hot dogs will tempt me as much as they used to.

I do have a question though and I think this will help me not only with hot dogs but with my general understanding of foods and carb counting...I did notice it said corn syrup somewhere in the ingredients. Did I screw up? The nutritional guide said the dogs were less than one carb per link. (Total Carbs: >1g per serving, serving size=1 link). So did I just throw myself out of ketosis by consuming corn syrup? Sorry to sound so dumb/blonde about it, but I am new to this so I am a little dumb & blonde to this. Haha

                    Re: carcinogens are yummy

I, too, have dogs, bacon and other nitrate containing meats, on occasion. Your question actually was one I was just asking myself a couple days ago, as I was enjoying a Nathan dog!

A question about the sugar free honey or syrups. I have some, Honey Tree's from WalMart, but the carb count seems high to me. The label says 17g carb, do the sugar alcohols completely offset the carbs so that it's carb free? I'd like to use it when I make a MIM, but I've been afraid that it could/would stall me.

Don't trust carb counts in packaged foods. You are much better reading and understanding the ingredients. You seem to be on the right path. If it says 0 carbs and it lists something that you know is a carb, it has a fractional carb. You probably consumed one gram between the two dogs and should be just fine.

It might. I have seen varying research on this topic. Some people seem to process sugar alcohols differently. Do a search on sugar alcohols and you will find that some people will count 17 as 8.5 grams and some people will completely disregard them. I remember it has something to do with if you feel gassy after eating them it means your body is processing them and you should count them more. If you don't get gassy, it means they are passing right through you and not affecting your insulin response. I think if you search xylitol you should find more answers. I know that sugar alcohols don't seem to affect me, but everyone seems to be different.

                          Re: carcinogens are yummy

I don't care about nitrites, nitrates or carcinogens. I have enough problems in my life without worrying about things that cause cancer in rats at a rate of 2000 times the normal dose... I worry more about eating food that doesn't have preservatives as many lives were lost many moons ago from foods that went bad before preservatives were invented.

I used to love hot dogs, now they seem very greasy to me and I don't eat them often. Although they are super low in carbs, they are very high in sodium, and I don't want to wake up the next day to the same weight or a gain just because I ate too much salt... So basically I eat processed foods in moderation...

I really avoid them but can't say that I don't have one or two things that contain sodium nitrate in a week span. I just keep it to real small minimum and it's really only for true emergencies.(didn't get to cook anything, running late, etc type of thing). I'd say about 1 hotdog or 1 or two slices of turkey...etc is really about all in a week.

I interpret what I have read on this subject as being the complete opposite, tfek!

If it gives the 'bathroom effect' then it is passing through your body and you can disregard some if not all of the carbs. The American diabetes society apparently advises members to count half the carbs of sugar alcohols nowadays.

If it does not make you run to the loo or give you gas etc then it IS being processed as if it was any other sugar carb and needs to be counted!
