  • strange bruises while on atkins?

    hi
i am currently on my 2nd week of induction and doing very well! this is the 2nd time i am doing atkins and i am getting very strange bruises on my body! mainly arms & legs. what is this from? i take the vitamins and flax seed oil. drink water all day and exercise. i am assuming i am bumping my arms & legs during the day, but never hard enough to say "ouch!" i've never experienced this before EXCEPT while on atkins! this happened 3 yrs ago when i did the diet too. anyone else experience this?

yes it happened to me when I was eating too much protein and not enough veggies actually. But I am bouncing all over the stage when I perform, so I wasn't sure at first if I was just doing too many acrobatics up there haha or what it was. After a couple months off work, the bruises continued and I finally figured it out. After I increased my veg, that problem disapeared completely. Not sure of the explanation behind this, only know it happened to me that way.

green leafy veggies contain a vit that our body uses to control bleeding without the right amount of it eatten and produced by intestinal bacteria you will bleed longer then you ususally do.

        Happy low carbing.

          I bruise like a banana

I am noticing alot more bruises too. My job is minimally physical and I do exercise so I know how I get the bruises, it just seems like I am bruising like a banana (too easily).

I was getting some bruises too early on, but it doesn't seem that way any more. My thinking is that early one I wasn't eating enough veggies...

I remembered it can be due to a deficiency of Vitamin C in particular and googled it - found this:

Bruises are usually caused by bumping into something which ruptures the tiny capillaries under the skin leaving the area darkened. Some people bruise more easily than others, and this is indicative of fragile capillaries, poor health or an inability to create collagen. For people who bruise easily, bruises seem to appear for no apparent reason. Research has shown us that the leading cause of frequent bruising is a deficiency in one or more nutrients. The elderly, due to their generally poor diet, are quite susceptible to having bruises. The remedy is very simple: add supplements to your diet. Dieters who have lost a substantial amount of weight are also at risk of developing bruises. This is due to the fact that they have many capillaries that were needed to supply blood to their body, but that body is no longer there, leaving the capillaries exposed.

One of the main causes of bruising seems to be a deficiency in certain nutrients, primarily vitamin C, vitamin E, vitamin K, bioflavonoids, and zinc. A vitamin C deficiency may be caused by several factors:

                • eating too few fruits and vegetables (remember the problem sailors used to have centuries ago with scurvy outbreaks on long voyages? It was caused by a lack of vitamin C)
                • taking drugs which destroys this vitamin
                • long-time stress from illness, frustration or depression
                • smoking (one cigarette can deplete the body of 25 mg of vitamin C)
                • frequent emotional outbursts such as anger
                • exposure to pollutants, allergens or heavy metals

A deficiency in hesperidin, one of the bioflavonoids (sometimes called vitamin P), naturally occurring nutrients usually found in association with vitamin C, has been linked with abnormal capillary weakness. These bioflavonoids, including hesperidin, Citrin, Rutin, Flavones, Flavonals, Calechin and Quercetin, were found to be essential in correcting the tendency toward bruising.

I'm on blood thinners, and I have rarely get an unexplained bruise.

I suggest talking to your doctor about it if it's happening on a regular basis.

When in doubt, check it out! :yes

Happened to me first in the beginning, I also think it's due to lack of proper veggies and vitamins, i wasn't eating nearly enough at first. Now that i am I bruise very rarely.

If it is a vitamin C deficiency, can anyone suggest foods to prevent this condition?

                      Thanks,

                        Thanks,
I was curious about this myself and so I looked it up - here is a site that lists fruits and vegetables high in vitamin c:

Discover fresh bananas, pineapples, organic produce, and sustainability at Dole. Enter code to find your farm's origin."Fresh bananas, pineapples, and more Dole fruits | Dole

some of it kind of surprises me, like broccoli has more vitamin c than oranges do. In fact, according to the list, there is only one other food that has more vitamin c than broccoli and thats kiwis. Learn something new every day!

I eat quite a bit of broccoli. Maybe I was just busier than usual and harder on my body.

I am a walking bruise this is not new for me I am one of those really lucky people who has capillaries right close to the skin serface. I can see mine through my skin. I have always bruised easily which sucks no matter what I take to try and prevent it nothing helps it's a hereditary condition my mom was the same. I went as far as getting a ton of tests done to see what was up nothing I am so healthy it's not even funny.
