  • Will this push me off of ketosis?

Ive been on a strict low carb hi fat diet for 2 weeks now. I believe i am under ketosis. But today, Im going to a chinese restaurant with my dad. N well i might be taking in 40-80g of carbs. I have had only 2g of carbs up to this point. Will that knock me off of ketosis?

Yes it will... and it might take up to 4 days to get back into ketosis...

Yes it will, but you'll still be burning fat instead of carbs.

You don't have to have the noodles and rice and you can ask them to leave out the cornstarch from the sauces (I don't trust that they do though). Choose the things that will do minimal damage or suggest a different restaurant. Yeah Chinese is nice but so are many other things and if your dad cares about you and your needs (and I am sure he does) why not go somewhere and eat legally?

You only burn fat when you are exercising beyond your caloric intake or you are in ketosis... If you go over your daily limit of carbs, your body will burn those carbs first before burning any fat.

Re: Will this push me off of ketosis?

Wrong, your body will compensate by storing the carbs as glycogen because your glycogen stores are depleted. You will gain 5-10 lb because of the sugar storage and accompanying water weight gain. You'll still be burning fat. Also, American-Chinese food is loaded with sodium, so you will get a bit bloated. But, believe me, it will all be water weight. For every gram of glycogen stored you'll pull about 3 grams of water with it. To change to carb burning, you would have to eat quite a bit of carbohydrate loaded meals 12 to 48 hours non stop.

You'll shed the water in three days. Don't feel guilt, and return to your previous dietary regimen. You'll be okay and you'll probably feel emotionally and physiologically like c**p. It's normal. You have not, by any means sabotaged your goals in any way.

Sorry Norman, but what makes you think the glycogen stores would necessarily be depleted?

ring, please note that the advice from the moderators of the ADBB site would be to not go off ketosis if possible. Regardless of whether or not Norman's assessment is correct, you would still have to revisit the Induction symptoms of your first couple of days, you will be bloated and feel crummy from taking in so many carbs at once after working so hard to be rid of your carb addiction, and you are setting yourself up on a path to stray very early in your weight loss. Things tend to happen more than once so if you are giving in this early, there will probably be other occasions where you feel a cheat day is necessary and before you know it you'll be back at your high weight again. It is about changing habits and lifestyle as much as the carb grams themselves.

Norman, Wrong......., Its impossible to gain 10lbs from 1 meal. Depending on physical activity this person will be thrown out of Ketosis. But as soon as the Carb surplus is depleted fat burning will begin again. A Chinese dinner is definately not recommended. It will definate throw yur body in to "neutral".

I agree with Jill, you need to make a lifestyle change in order to lose the weight & keep it off - order something legal from the menu or go to another restaurant. If you cheat during/right after induction, how are you going to manage long-term?

You could always order steamed veggies...those are safe. I would avoid eating of plan if at all possible because for me it is so hard to get back on plan.... most Chinese places I've been to also have an american section on the menu. You could get a burger with out the bun and a salad to stay on the safe side or steak or something.....just a thought.....

Re: Will this push me off of ketosis?

Norman that only works for people who are doing intense full body muscle work outs so it only works for body builders xD

its true your muscles are the largest glucose stores on your body and while on a low carb diet (20-30 net a day) you get more insulin receptors on your muscles so if you happend to work all your muscles super hard they would be drained of glucose and with all the extra insulin receptors made on them to catch all the glucose that you do eat from like protein converted glucose that would be enough to make them strong and grow

this is why full body muscle work outs help so much with weight loss cause the carb glucose you do eat will be caught by your depleted muscles another reason why men lose fat so much faster then women

so if you had 1 cheat day like once a week of like (high carb chineese food) with hard worked muscles then with all the extra insulin receptors on your muscles your muscles would fill up like a baloon and you would most likely not gain any fat if you are careful

but it doesnt always work 100% sometimes your muscles dont catch it all

anyways i know you already know most of that Norman i was just saying it so other people can understand it too xD

and ya in the past a few times when i did cheat by the next day i was 5 lbs heavier back then i thought it was 5 lbs of fat xD but it turns out to have been like 4 lbs of water and 1 lbs of fat however if i was a body builder back then it prob would have been 5 lbs of water

But I must concede, it took me 2 days at 3250+ cal per day, 50% carb intake to produce the weight gain I got. After the first meal, (1 cup oat meal, 2 teaspoon full of sugar, 1 poppy seed bagel with jelly and 1.5 cups of skim milk) I gained close to 3 lb. I'm sure it was the sodium , water and fiber in my system, plus the water that I drank.
And, of course, my scale is broken after I had my first carb load this weekend on Saturday. Yes, I started out at 225 lb Saturday morning and now I'm at 234 lb. Must be a carb induced hallucination. Sorry, Dr. sdot313. I don't get to defend my dissertation until August 28th.

Incidentally, my bodyfat % remained the same.

It depends on your metabolism. We had folks here who were in ketosis eating 100 g of carbohydrate. The biggest problem is not whether that will kick you out of ketosis, but the effect it will have on your blood sugar. If it triggers a binge it may make it difficult to get back on track. Most of us are not very good at controlling portion sizes, or otherwise we would have not become overweight/obese in the first place. And you can ask the guys in the "Second Time Around Club" forum if getting back on track after a cheat is as easy as they imagined. From experience I can tell you it isn't, but you probably want to get more opinions.

I would not risk throwing the results of two good weeks out the window, but this is a decision you have to make for yourself. As Jill said, if you want to stay on track, there are ways to do it. Good luck whatever you decide to do.
