  • Flying Southwest, question...

Hi all, I did several searches and couldn't come up with the answer.

Has anyone flown Southwest lately? I am more than a little nervous about my flight next Sunday. I haven't flown SW in quite a while. I know that the distance between the armrests is 17.25" and the cushion width is 18.95 inches. Right now I'm at 262 and between a size 20 and 22. The 20's are a little snug and the 22's are too big.

Anyone else around this size fly SW lately? I would be mortified to have to buy another seat! I flew on Delta last Sept at 274, but I reserved a seat with an empty seat beside me. But it would have been really tight if the row was full!

    Any help anyone?

I haven't flown for a while. But the last time I did I weighed in at 245 pounds and wore a size 24-26 and I didn't have to get another seat or anything like that (of course that was back in 2000 and things have changed since then.)

well lets assume you are perfectly round across your hips and use the smaller number at 17.25 for the distance which would be 2 times the radius of the larges ball that could get into that seat the outside measurement of that ball would be slightly more then 54 inches so you should fit. you can meaure using your butt cross real simple using a sandwich bag box which shoule be 6.5 inches and a platic wrap box which should be 12 inches if you are smaller then both of them end to end you will fit.

      Happy low carbing.

I've been lurking out here - newbie - but this post made we register. Thanks! I thought I was the only one that worried about this kind of stuff.

I flew Southwest last year. I weighed then & now 300+ & wear a 26-28W. No problem - didn't have to buy another seat. Pulled the seat belt as far as it would go & was able to latch it. Uncomfortable with the seat size but I was OK --- I KNOW you will be fine!

Good for you on the weight loss!

Yes, you should fit just fine. I was your weight, but in a size 24 (so I'm guessing I'm shorter than you) and didn't have any problem at all and this was just a couple of months ago. Now I'm in your size and I KNOW I wouldn't have a problem.

Oh, and a year before that, I was in a size 28 and weighed about 286 and I fit then too. My body shape is well porportioned, so no extremes in the hips or belly.

2big - you are so inventive :nod Okay this is how anxious I am - I measured a piece of paper and then measured it against the arms on my office chair and then rigged it so that it was the same size and the airline seat. It was a little snug. I am going to get there early and try to get a seat in the back, and a window seat.

magz - I'm really glad you're registered and not just for my post, but the Atkins, low carb way of life is helping soooo many people (as is apparent on these boards alone). Just take more time to lurk and read the stickies and other posts, there is A LOT of information! Thanks for sharing your experience too.

Thanks Stacy...well I'm 5'5" as well, I work out a lot so I have a lot of muscle but a somewhat stocky build, so I weigh a lot more than people might guess.

Ok, so I think I will survive the trip. At least it is only one way, so I only have to deal with it once!!!

            Wish me luck.

mortified to have to buy a second seat huh?

That should be a darn good incentive to eat well and exercise. trust me, diet is not everything. If you are not doing cardio 3-6 days per week, get started.

Wow, that wasn't very nice. I am sure she knows what she needs to do and not do. She didn't ask for weight loss advice she asked about Sw seats!

I flew a few years back and was about 340 at the time. The seat was snug but I fit in it. I did need to ask for an extension for the seatbelt but all planes carry them.

Mortification factor aside... if they do make you buy a 2nd seat, unless the plane is completely full, they will refund that cost.
