  • Green tea question

I've been wanting to drink more green tea since I've heard such good things. It took me a while to find green tea that's decaffeinated but I finally found some by Salada. I've been drinking it all day and then I started feeling kind of funny. I'm sensitive to caffiene. So I got out the box and started reading. You would think as long as I've been doing this that I would learn to read labels on everything. Even tea! Anyway I was wanting you guys opinion on this list...
natural lemon, lime, and orange flavors with other natural flavors, contains traces of wheat from maltodextrin and fish gelatin.

Still not really sure what is causing the reaction like it has caffeine in there. It does say it has siberian ginseng in it. Wondering if that was it. Or if they can sneak caffeine in there and still call it decaffinated.
My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people.

"Decaffeinated" stuff (coffee, tea) still has some caffeine in it. You need to drink plain water (min 64oz) no matter how much tea you drink. Consider limiting the tea

Thanks for your concern but I drink plenty of water thank you! I drink tea for a little flavor throughout the day. Usually it's herbal but thought I'd try the green tea.
And since you seemed so concerned, I drink at least 120 ounces of plain water a day and usually between 40 and 60 ounces of tea.

I'm sorry - "i've been drinking it all day" gave me the (wrong) impression that you were drinking it exclusively - my mistake.

maltodextrin is another name for sugar -- the lemon, lime and orange flavorings may need to be counted toward your carb total since you drink so much of it.

I'm wondering why they need fish gelatin as one of the ingredients.....

Yes I was wondering about the fish gelatin. I was like yuck.
Well, I guess since it has sugar in it, I won't be drinking any more anyway.

As Julie said, even decaf tea has a small amount of caffeine in it. A cup (6 oz) of decaf Salada has ~2 mg. A cup of regular green tea has about 20 mg.

That's for that, Georgiana. So it's ok to ingest then?
It funny, I can have two cups of caffienated coffee and it won't bother me but caffiene in tea really gives me the shakes.
I use to take Ginseng in capsules and it never bothered me so who knows But I am learning allot.
On a side note, I was down a pound and a half this morning

Don't know if this helps but I have a box of Celestial Seasonings decaf green tea. The ingredients list: decaffeinated green tea. Carbs - 0, Sugars - 0.

Always be careful to read the ingredients when flavorings are added (lemon, orange, etc.).

From a weight loss point of view it should be okay. But there might be reasons other than caffeine why you usually (?) have a reaction to tea, especially since this tea was decaf and you can drink coffee.

It could be from the ginseng, from the flavorings.... If these are the problem, then you could take green tea capsules instead. A capsule has less than 5 mg of caffeine (so about the same or less than 6 oz of green tea).

green tea in capules? Maybe it's me, but anything in a capsule just doesn't seem to work as well as the real live leaf, root, flower or what ever part of the plant you are trying to reap the benefit from. It would be no different than eating a lettuce capsule or some veggie pill. The perfect example would be the garlic pill. The part that is beneficial is actually refined out of the garlic to make the pill, but they still sell it and people buy it.

Barbie, I don't know of any research showing that the benefits of green tea are diminished when taking green tea capsules instead of drinking actual tea. In fact, there is a study done by Susanne Henning from UCLA that showed the contrary in a trial of 30 healthy subjects: Bioavailability and antioxidant activity of tea flavanols after consumption of green tea, black tea, or a green tea extract supplement -- Henning et al. 80 (6): 1558 -- American Journal of Clinical Nutrition

Garlic pills. The jury is still out on the "magic" element in garlic. I believe the "part" you are referring to is allicin. The major problem with the pills is that the enzyme responsible for making allicin out of alliin is destroyed by the acid in the stomach unless the pill is coated with a certain substance. Furthermore, a report has shown that 8 out of 18 garlic supplements tested did not meet the claims on the label (no/little alliin) or were contaminated with lead: ConsumerLab.com Product Review: Garlic Supplements

Thanks, I'll look for that one next time. This Salada was the only decaf green tea this big store had. This morning I went to our little nieghborhood store and they actually had 3 kinds of decaf green tea. I picked me up a box of Lipton. Haven't tried it yet but I've heard it's pretty good.

Check out the second flush method. That Salada tea sounds like it has a lot of crap in it to mask the poor quality of the leaves themselves. Drinking tea is a very pleasurable and healthy experience. Look into buying loose green tea (it's more expensive but you will use the leaves 3 or 4 times, and it tastes sooo much better that it works out). Steep the tea for 5 minutes; drain, keeping the leaves and re-brew with fresh water. Most of the caffeine will be extracted with the first flush. I LOVE green tea and am hoping to continue drinking while on Atkins! Good luck!
