A Workout Warning: Avoid Weighted Sit-Ups

    by Shannon Clark

One of the biggest mistakes that many women make in the gym is not lifting a suitably heavy weight. There is an ongoing fear that if they start lifting more than ten pounds, they’ll sprout an enormous amount of muscle mass overnight - not something that most would desire. Because of this, some women avoid lifting heavy and unfortunately do not see the results they hope for.

If you want to make changes to your body, you need to pick up heavier weights. It’s really that simple. When you do, you are going to place an overloading stimulus on the body; one that the body will then respond to by growing back stronger.

This is how you not only improve your performance, but increase your metabolism through the building of lean muscle mass tissue.

That said, the one exception to this rule is with abdominal muscles.

norman, great post! as someone who used to weightlift everyday with a trainer, i totally concur. women need to lift, i mean, LIFT! the difference in your body is amazing. and even after not lifting for almost nine years, all those muscles i built are still underneath all this fat. now to get the fat off... atkins is a great start, but what i really need to do is get back to the gym! thanks for sharing your wisdom; i hope it motivates other women to weight train. it's one of the most amazing things you can do for your body (and your mind and your spirit.)

I'm glad you ladies enjoyed it. Attagirl, there is such a thing as muscle memory! You'll gain everything back in no time! Also, training will enhance your metabolism and give you a bit of personal space out of life's doldrums. Think of it not as a shore to accomplish but a bit of personal time or a micro-vacation. You are currently at 209 and your goal is 140. I bet if you train hard but intelligently, buckle down on your diet, you will be very close to your goal weight by the Christmas holidays.

Sham, you are at 177 and your goal is 166. I bet you can reach that way before Labor day here in the US. Possibly right after my summer holiday is over.

        Cheers,
        Norman
