  • Skipped Extended Induction and Rung 1

Has anyone ever done this?? My weight completely stalled after my big 5 lb loss during induction. I started Atkins on June 21st. As I was reading through the site, several people were told to start the rungs if stalling had occurred. I started on rung 2 and loss 1lb the very next day! My weight is coming off so very slow and my clothes are not feeling any looser. Am I the only one this is happening to? I feel like I am battling myself to death!!!

    OK, enough said.

    Thanks for listening,

    Michelle

Re: Skipped Extended Induction and Rung 1

Based upon my knowledge you should have moved up to Rung 1 with 5 extra net carbs coming from vegetables. ou are not suppose to skip a Rung unless and allergy or you don't plan to use it.

I know how you feel... first week of introduction lost almost 9 pounds, second week nothing... moved to Rung 1 and I'm down 3 lbs... I feel that I should be loosing like atleast 3-5 pounds a week based upon how much weight I need to loose, but I'm not.. I'm just sticking with it and letting my body do what it needs to do.

Please post a daily menu for the experts to review, maybe they can find something that you are missing or getting to much of.

It is okay if it takes me a little longer to get there, besides this is where I'm going to stay forever and that is a really long time!!!

Re: Skipped Extended Induction and Rung 1

It is best to go up the rungs the way they are written unless, like said above, you have an allergy to that group OR you don't eat anything on that rung....since you DO eat veggies it's best to add them first -- add a couple different veggies and move up to the next rung.

Although....skipping to Rung 2 isn't nearly as bad as skipping from induction to Rung 7!

      Good luck.

Thank you both. I will see where this takes me. If I find in a couple of weeks that I lose no more, then I will step down. I am having to force myself to eat, still at this point. I went for 6 hrs. without eating yesterday. But I didn't realize it, until I started to feel a little hungry.

        Thanks again,

Don't step down. Once we start stepping we should step
Since you are on rung 2 - experiment with what you introduced and then later add back 5 more carbs of veggies. We can mix up the order of the steps but we should step. I really recommend working in those veggie carbs though. For most people those are the safest carbs to eat on a low carb diet and they are very nutritious. And tasty
Glad things worked for you. When you started rung 2 did you add in more daily carbs?

Just adding extended induction is not a requirement. Some people choose to stay there but it is perfectly fine to move to OWL right after those 14 days.

Just a comment about "extended Induction". There is no phase called "Extended Induction" in the book. We only call it that here on ADBB because we have people who choose to extend Induction Phase past the 14 Days and some time ago, it was thought best that these people have their own forum in which to post. When they choose to "extend" Induction, they choose to follow the Induction Rules and eat only what is on the Induction Acceptable Foods List.

As for skipping Rung 1, we don't recommend it because 1. you get additional vitamins, minerals, nutrients and fiber from incorporating 5 additional net carbs of any Induction veggie to your menu and 2. because these foods have lower risk of upsetting your blood sugar than the other rungs, so it's a good "test" rung.

I have incorporated the extra veggies and added Brie cheese, (watching my other cheese intake) to my menu. I will stay with this for awhile and see what happens. I do need to watch my intake of Splenda, as I am having several packets a day! I know my limit is 3. I also need to limit myself on the sour cream.

Brie cheese is allowed on induction. How many carbs are you having? Stepping up rungs is not just about food. It is about carbs too. And when we start doing it we have to be ready to count carbs and keep control on things. We are only adding five new carbs at the time. And only eating 5 carbs of any new food we introduce - till we get to pre maintenance. Good job on finding your weak spots. Keep going.

I didn't think I was having that many carbs. I am not very good at counting them, but I will try.

Also bear in mind that our age and hormone levels, exercise level, water intake and a host of things all play into the amount an individual will lose in a week. Using Fitday.com can help you track your carbs and nutrients. It seems awkward at first but you become much quicker at it after a couple of days.

Thank you for all your help. I have been on Atkins for 3 weeks now and have only lost 6 lbs. I'm beginning to think maybe it's not for me. I am giving it 1 more week and then I will move on to another eating plan.

Thank you all again for the help you have given me,

Re: Skipped Extended Induction and Rung 1

Michelle, when you added extra veggies, did you add 5 net carbs of Induction veggies? Or did you add 5 net carbs of a "new" veggie? And how many net carbs are you currently eating?

How much cheese are you eating in total? Any other OWL Rung 2 food you have introduced, other than Brie?

Are you limiting your Splenda to 3 servings/packets per day? Drinking any diet sodas? Shakes? Bars?

It's best if you post a few menus, incl. quantities, and then we can take a look at those and see if there's anything that can be improved.

I am not very good at having to "count" anything like carbs, points, etc... I thought you didn't need to count those things with Atkins? I'm not saying I can't count them, but having to look up lettuce??? I chose Atkins, because I thought it would be easier than WW. Sorry, I'm just frustrated. I think there is a post for menu's, so I will post my menu for today on there tomorrow.

                            Thanks,

Re: Skipped Extended Induction and Rung 1

No worries. Yes, I'll check that after you post tomorrow.

Regarding counting. Induction is quite mindless and if you follow the Rules of Induction to a tee is pretty much impossible to go over 20 net carbs per day. So during Induction, counting carbs or calories is not necessary.

However, when you move to OWL, you are supposed to add a new food not more than 3x per week and only in 5 net carbs amounts. So if you add more veggies by adding a cup of celery root to your Induction menu, then you are adding 11.6 net carbs... so more than the 5 net carbs you should be adding. That's why in OWL (and later on in the program as well), counting is not only necessary, but very important---both for adding new foods and for finding your CCLL.

This is from Chapter 14 in DANDR (the "OWL chapter"):
Second, whereas during Induction you ate your protein and fat foods, plus three cups of salad and other vegies [...], OWL allows you much more choice. That means now you can craft a weight loss regimen that is uniquely yours. But it also means---and here's the third key---that counting grams of carbohydrate is truly your responsability.

If you don't count, you could get in trouble.
