  • Diet pop?!?! Let's talk about it...

Ok! I should know all of this. But I am struggling with a now, almost 30 pound weight gain. I eat pretty responsibly but the diet pop, that I had formerly given up while losing 130 pounds, is back in the picture.

Talk to me. Can this be enough to make me put back on the weight?!?!?! I need anyone and everyones advice and take on this deal. Quality research of references to articles on the subject appreciated.

    Thanks!

Dr. Atkins says on page 189... "Stay out of the java jungle. Excessive caffeine (found not only in coffee, but in tea, chocolate, and many soft drinks) has been shown to cause a hypoglycemic (low blood sugar) reaction, which will provoke cravings and cause you to overeat. Omitting caffeine may be a big sacrifice for you, but, in my experience, weight loss often starts up again as soon as people remove aspartame and caffeine from their regimen."

It's poison and you don't need it. Water and herbal iced teas are good for you. Drink those instead. You can do it. It's just a bad habit... once you stop it for a while you won't miss it. (i'm lying... I haven't had one in a year and a half and i still miss them, but I tell myself this lie because it makes it easier to stay off them! ... lol.)

Why put colored chemical water into your body? There is a reason they aren't listed as part of the "legal" drinks by Dr. Atkins. Here is the list of your legal choices of drinks you count toward your daily intake -- try drinking a cup or glass of tea but make sure you get at least 64 ounces of pure water daily.

Make sure you drink a minimum of 64 ounces of pure water each day, including:
          Filtered water
          Mineral water
          Spring water
          Tap water

I choose to not add chemicals back into my day - soda's are a large part of what put my weight on so to make the change needed to loose - the soda has to stay out of my life.

I know everyone and their mother is against diet drinks here, but I love them and there a nice little treat for me that don't seem to effect my weight in a negative way and i usually have 2 cans a day. But I suppose we're all different - you should experiment to see if it causes a stall for you =] and grats on all your weight loss! your a true inspiration!

Not to ruffle any feathers but here is a quote straight from the book:

              Beverages:
clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
              club soda
cream (heavy or light); limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carbohydrate content decaffeinated coffee or tea*
diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda®)
essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and must not contain aspartame)
herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce); limit to two to three tablespoons
              mineral water
              spring water
              water
*Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.
That being said, when I do indulge in a diet coke, like once a month, I always go for the caffeine free version. Even then it is a small can.

Edit: Once a month not once a week...I need to learn to proof read

I have no problems with caffeine. In fact, caffeine is a mild diuretic and lipolytic especially if drunk before working out. I drink about 4 cups of balck, unsweetened coffe daily, especially before my workouts. As for the diet sodas, I'm not a big fan of them. I do drink them on occasion when on social gatherings.

Perhaps you should try cutting them out for a couple weeks, to see if you start losing (or stop gaining). That will tell you how they affect YOU, not anyone else.

Frankly, it was hard for me to drink the 64 fluid ounce of water daily minimum. Since sodas, teas, coffee, etc. aren't counted to that 64 fluid ounce minimum, I didn't bother drinking them regularly.

On the occasions I do drink coffee, tea, etc. I'm only able to drink about 4 fluid ounces because I find the taste too heavy and I get bored with it, quickly.

Re: Diet pop?!?! Let's talk about it...

I drink diet cola most days and have consistently been losing the past 12 weeks (which is when I started). I do try to drink the splenda cola whenever I can, and kept it very minimal during induction. I should also state that I generally eat a menu that probably qualifies as 'extended induction' simply because those foods are what I enjoy (eggs or Atkins bar for b'fast, some sort of meat for lunch & dinner with vegtables or salad on the side)

For reference I am a 5'10'' male, started on April 18th at 217 and am now 188.

My opinion is that diet soda (and Atkins PB cups for that matter) have helped me easily stay with this way of eating. Sure I could eliminate them, but I would probably be eating things much worse carb-wise.

I think if you have 'gained' thirty lbs. there is a bit more going on (and in) than just soda...

Try diet rite - it is sweetened with splenda and has no sodium either. Many different flavors... but I do agree with the others on here, use it as an occasional treat (I use it to satiate a sweet craving every so often) - like if I am at a party and there is dessert, THAT is my dessert.

I'd have to agree, diet soda didn't make you gain 30 lbs unless you are overeating because of it.... then it could be. Cut it out for a week and see what happens.
