i found myself hating to drink water and couldnt keep track of how much i was drinking through the day. heres an easy fix for anyone with the same problem. i took an orange, take 2-3 thin slices put them in a 2 quart pitcher and add your water, throw it in the fridge. the water will become flavored and when the pitcher is empty you know you drank your 64 ounces (8-8oz) of water for the day. i have found myself drinking about 3-4 quarts of water now a day, whereas i was lucky to force down 2. just a small tip most of you problably already knew but for the ones who are having trouble with their water intake this may help? its very important we are getting our water through the day on atkins.

This would just probably be a mental thing for me, but I would wonder how many carbs are in the water from the juice. When trying to keep under 20g per day, 2 or 3 here or there can make at least a mental impact on me. I wonder if lemon or lime would have fewer carbs?

you could use either, a whole orange is 12 carbs. 2-3 thin slices (key words are thin slices 1/8 inch) added to 2 quarts of water im sure would only be a trace. i dont use lemon only because i really dont like lemons very much. its a matter of personal preference. as with all the carbs we eat its a matter of moderation. if you give them oranges, you get orange juice. give them 2 thin orange slices, you get orange flavored water.

Unfortunately, for Induction, oranges are not allowed. Lemons and limes, however, are the only citrus "legal" for Induction phase.

For other citrus, you would have to wait until On-Going Weight Loss Phase.

Looks like you're moving down the scale, and water is a major contributor to that action!! If you're losing steadily, I'd say you're one of the ones who can throw a few thin slices of orange into your water and do just fine. Like everything, it boils down your body's reaction!

Like Megs said -- oranges aren't allowed on induction -- lemons and limes are. I've written many times about floating lemon or lime slices in your water if you have to "flavor" your water....I prefer mine plain.

As Megs and Carole said, orange juice is not allowed during the Induction phase if you are following DANDR 2002.
No one should experiment with oranges before reaching OWL Rung 7.

perhaps some of the rind/zest alone would be enough (as with other cooking/baking)?

The rind is loaded with nutrients, as well. I zest all citrus and keep it in the freezer in ziplock baggies. That's a great idea.

A few cucumber slices in ice water tastes really good, too, and induction legal.

                    Re: water intake

we all vary, from the way we look, too how our bodies react to things. i dont like lemons and limes simply put. i was not goin to keep forcing water down my throat the way i was doing it. so i adapted. we adapt everyday, its how we make it through life and its challenges. it may be something as simple as driving a different way to work to avoid heavy traffic on a road. thats an adaptation. if there is one thing i have learned in life is sometimes the blueprint is not your blueprint, think outside the box. im sure when mr atkins made up the "no oranges" rule he was meaning no "eating" oranges. well my 3 thin orange slices 3-times per week are never ate. infact the are perfectly together as sliced when i throw them away. just as you'all do with your lemons/limes. again i am focusing more on the bottom line here, and thats 13+lbs gone in my 1st week. im completly happy with that. so if this means "cheating" just enough to be able to drink my water consistantly, i'm going to do it everytime. some people may not like that? all i can say to that is i would take a guess that 75-80% of the people on this site make some sort of "variance" on the plan. some are worse than others, and thats fine. in the long run you have nobody to blame but yourself. if you can live with that, thats fine. this weight didnt come on over night and its not going to come off that way. i am very, very happy with my progress, infact its more than i anticipated. to me many people are more concerned with how much weight they lost in "a certain" time period. they feel dissapointed because they didnt lose the weight as fast as the next person. i've seen it 1st hand. 3 years ago i was about the same size i am now. i lost 57 lbs in 12 weeks on a different plan (though as you see i gained it back when i quit) i constantly had people whine and cry that they werent losing as fast as me. im sorry. maybe its my makeup. infact thats probably exactly what it is. i was an athlete when i was younger. i was in a gym nearly everyday building muscle. im sure i have lost a lot of that muscle by now, but its helping with my caloric burn. this is why men lose faster than women. muscle burns calories, hence more muscle= more calories burned. if your losing be happy with that. celebrate it! dont worry yourself with "i wish it could have been more" or "so and so lost it faster than i am". to me if it means "varying" a certain item to get me through a dieting obsticle im going to try it in with the slightest varaition i can, and see if that works. if not i will try something else. again adaptation. be happy with any loss period no matter the size of the gain. its that much closer to a goal you want to acheive. please if anyone is upset by this i really am sorry. its not in my nature to upset people, infact im the complete opposite i believe. i just didnt like people telling me "your illegal or you cant do something". again i'm a results driven person. happy losing everyone

                        Re: water intake

When we post we post for the good of the community as well as for individuals. I'm sure you are correct that there are some who vary each day and cry and fuss when they don't loose. When I started Atkins I put my mind to rules in the book not "my way" because "my way" doesn't work obviously.

If you think we are "quite authoritarian/critical" it's because Dr. Atkins wrote this plan after significant numbers of patients were followed, it was well honed and thought out. If you know better than the plan and want to follow "your way" that's fine but when we post the rules don't get upset that we don't agree with you.

Each post could possibly be read by a new person who will see you doing something not on the plan and believe they can do the same - like the bars and shakes - so we try to keep on plan and post the rules.

I read a "recipe" somewhere that used lemon slices and cucumber slices the same way. I thought it sounded quite refreshing.

well if they can do the same with results wouldnt that be a good thing as apposed to quitting the diet entirely because they had an obsticle they couldnt get over and were discouraged? im not out here telling people what to do, just what i do. i understand you want people to "stay the coarse", so do i. i wish everyone on here who is battling or has battled a weight problem the best of luck! as we know its not a fun thing to go through life with.

i may try this 1. i really like cucumbers. maybe they will cancel out some of the lemon flavor. not to mention to me a cucumber is one of them extremely fresh tastes. just like cilantro is. always tastes fresh from the garden.
